'It felt like it was never gonna end': Cape Breton Eagles extend season in 5th overtime

CBC05-04-2025
It was a marathon session for players and spectators in Sydney on Friday night but the Cape Breton Eagles eventually triumphed 3-2 over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.
It was the second-longest game in Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League history.
Game 5 of their first-round playoff series at Centre 200 started at 7:04 p.m. and ended at 1:22 a.m. when Angelo Fullerton scored 1:42 into the fifth overtime period.
Speaking on Saturday, Fullerton said he was sore and exhausted but it was a special goal in his hockey career.
"It was a long night, but it was a lot of fun, especially getting to do that with all my friends," he said.
Fullerton said he has never been on the ice that long before and the challenge for the team was keeping its energy up throughout.
He said nobody on the team wanted to go home so early in the season. The Eagles began the night trailing the Drakkar 3-1 in the best-of-seven series.
Looking at his teammates during the game and wanting to fight for them kept him going, Fullerton said.
With two disallowed goals for Baie-Comeau and one for the Eagles, Fullerton said there were points when "it felt like it was never gonna end."
But he said the players kept pushing because they had nothing to lose at that point.
For diehard Eagles fans like Matthew Briggs, the game was an emotional roller-coaster that seemed to go on for an eternity.
He said he's seen hundreds of hockey games in his life but never one like he saw on Friday.
He said at certain points during the game he had to ask his friends what overtime they were in.
"Are we in the eighth? Are we in the ninth period? We just lost track of time. That's how long the game was," Briggs said.
Briggs thought the game was over a few times in overtime. He left the arena, only to find that goals were disallowed. He stayed until the end after that.
Eagles head coach Louis Robitaille said he is proud of the team.
He said some members of the team were in tears during the game thinking their season was over and that their junior career was over.
But they were able to bounce back, he said, and showed resiliency and pride.
"That's what will stick with me forever," Robitaille said.
He said the players were even sharper by the end of the game then they were during the second period.
Robitaille credits the fans for being a big part of the success of the team.
"The support has been incredible," he said.
"The players did it for them, did it for the entire island that we're proud to be Cape Bretoners. To see the joy after that game yesterday, it's something unbelievable."
The series shifts to Baie-Comeau for Game 6 on Monday. Game 7, if necessary, would be Tuesday.

Jets bolster defensive line with trade for Browns' Jowon Briggs

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets acquired defensive tackle Jowon Briggs from the Cleveland Browns in a trade Wednesday that also included draft picks. The Browns also sent a seventh-round pick in next year's NFL draft to New York for a sixth-rounder next year. Briggs had 13 tackles with two quarterback hits in six games for Cleveland last season after being a seventh-round selection. The 6-foot-1, 313-pound D-lineman had 12 career sacks and 170 tackles during a college career that began at Virginia (2019-20) and finished with three years at Cincinnati (2021-23). Briggs adds depth to a defensive line in New York that's led by three-time Pro Bowl pick Quinnen Williams and includes Micheal Clemons, Jay Tufele, Will McDonald and Rashad Weaver. Defensive tackle Byron Cowart has missed time in training camp with an ankle injury, so the addition of Briggs could help fill that void for the Jets if Cowart is sidelined for an extended time. K.J. Henry's pick-6 leads Browns to win over Eagles in preseason game with Shedeur Sanders sidelined

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Cleveland Browns had to turn to other quarterbacks with rookie Shedeur Sanders injured. The decisive touchdown came on defense instead of from relief QBs. K.J. Henry returned an interception 45 yards for a score in the third quarter to send the Browns to a 22-13 preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. In a game missing almost all regular-season starters on both sides — Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley sat out for the defending Super Bowl champions while Myles Garrett and Jerry Jeudy rested for the Browns — the Eagles got a better look at their draft picks fighting for playing time. Andrew Mukuba returned an interception 75 yards for a score and recovered a fumble, and Jihaad Campbell had a sack, an impressive showing for the Eagles' top two 2025 draft picks. Maybe somewhere actor Matthew McConaughey was impressed. McConaughey, a Longhorns superfan, had a social media post in support of Mukuba when the safety was drafted out of Texas in the second round. Mukuba missed time early in training camp with a shoulder injury and returned only in the last few days to take first-team reps. He was in the right spot to pick off a pass from Dillon Gabriel. Mukuba took it all the way for the 75-yard score and a 7-6 lead. He added a fumble recovery later and broke up a pass in the second half, the kind of plays needed to close the gap in his competition with Sydney Brown for the starting spot. Campbell, a linebacker out of Alabama selected 31st overall, sacked Gabriel on the second play of the game. The Eagles just may have found two more defensive gems to make meaningful contributions in their pursuit of another title. The Eagles and Browns both played it safe with their starters after the two teams held a pair of joint practices earlier in the week. Sanders hurt his oblique in the first practice and did not play Saturday. The Browns started Gabriel, a third-round pick who worked his way back into the lineup after he had been sidelined with an injured hamstring. Gabriel was 13 of 18 passing for 143 yards and the pick-6. Tyler 'Snoop' Huntley played in the second half and was 10 of 13 for 71 yards. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw a pick-6 to Henry that gave Cleveland a 19-13 lead in the third. Thompson-Robinson was replaced by Kyle McCord, another 2025 draft pick, on the next series. McCord, who is from nearby Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and was raised as an Eagles fan, threw a touchdown pass and threw for 47 yards overall. The Eagles had just 88 total yards. Sanders out Sanders, who covered his head with a towel as he watched from the sideline, didn't play after he sustained an oblique injury during drills ahead of practice Wednesday. The Browns said he is day to day. Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards with two first-half touchdown passes to Kaden Davis in his NFL preseason debut in a win in the opener over Carolina. The 40-year-old Joe Flacco, in the mix to start the season opener, also sat out. And Kenny Pickett didn't play as he recovers from a hamstring injury. High snap Yes, Thompson-Robinson threw the pick-6, but he wasn't helped by a high snap from Brett Toth. Toth played at center and Drew Kendall was at left guard as the Eagles tried to get by without the injured Landon Dickerson. Dickerson has been sidelined since he suffered a right knee injury at an open practice. The Eagles have not given a timeline for his absence or ruled him out for the season opener. Eagles' Landon Dickerson serves beers at practice while recovering from knee surgery

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Landon Dickerson played bartender and served cold ones for the Super Bowl champion Eagles with the injured offensive lineman's career temporarily on ice. The Eagles can't wait for Dickerson to resume his day job. Dickerson passed around beers Thursday at the end of a joint practice with the Cleveland Browns — with a brace on his right knee following meniscus surgery that will keep the three-time Pro Bowl lineman sidelined at least through the end of training camp. Dickerson was injured at the end of Sunday's open practice at Lincoln Financial Field. There is no set timetable for his return, and Brett Toth took first-team snaps at left guard this week at practice. Toth likely will start for the Eagles when they play their second preseason game Saturday against the Browns. 'Whatever they ask me to do, I'm going to step to the plate and give it the best I got,' Toth said. 'Hopefully I can perform to the standard that was before me.' Beyond that, there are no guarantees. The Eagles remain hopeful Dickerson could return for the season opener when the Eagles raise their championship banner on Sept. 4 against Dallas. 'Don't have to name any starters or any backups at any position,' coach Nick Sirianni said. 'Brett's done a nice job and I like the depth that we have at that position and I know we have options there, but you asked about Brett, I think Brett's doing a really good job and he's got a lot of versatility.' Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson remained confident that Toth could handle the spot but was relieved that Dickerson wasn't necessarily expected to remain sidelined deep into the season. 'It was alarming but I'm glad we got a good-case scenario,' Johnson said. 'Make no mistake, Landon's one of the, if not, the best guard in football.' Toth, who played at Army, has had three stints with the Eagles and spent a bulk of that time on the practice squad. 'H's a really smart individual, really good with the detail of the game,' Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo said. 'He understands a lot of positions, which is great to have a guy like that that can line up in multiple spots and be able to step in if something happens. So I think that's the biggest thing he brings and I think he's been in the system for a while.' ___ AP NFL:
