MILLIONS of Brits are missing out on the health benefits of a key nutrient - and could be increasing their bowel cancer risk.
New research has found while many are aware it can improve digestive health, they're unaware it can help prevent the deadly disease.

The research, commissioned by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), shows just 7 per cent of people know they should be getting 30g of fibre day, with the average Brit thinking they only need 12.4g of fibre a day - less than half of the government's recommendation.
This means they could be missing out on a range of potential health benefits that a diet high in fibre can bring – from improved digestive health to reduced risk of bowel disease or diabetes.
Whilst nearly two thirds of people (65.3 per cent) said they are aware that fibre improves digestive health and nearly half (49.5 per cent) are aware it can reduce the risk of bowel disease.
And less people (35 per cent) are aware that a high fibre diet can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Fibre has been found to reduce the risk of bowel cancer by promoting regular bowel movements, potentially reducing exposure to carcinogens, and supporting a healthy gut microbiome.
Whereas fibre is believed to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease primarily by improving blood sugar control, reducing cholesterol levels, and aiding in weight management.
In 2015, the UK government boosted its recommended fibre intake guidelines, taking it from 24g to 30g, recognising the crucial role of fibre to people's health.
But the average Brit eats just 16g of fibre a day, with only 4 per cent achieving the daily recommendation.

Eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, incorporating a range of pulses and choosing wholegrain options can all help people get to 30g of fibre.
For example, simply adding a portion of frozen peas to your dinner will increase your fibre by nearly 5g.
Diagnosed with bowel cancer at 22
Swapping from white to wholemeal toast can add more than a gram per slice, and if you added a tablespoon of peanut butter that's another gram of fibre.
Fibre is best found in fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, legumes, and nuts and seeds.

So five foods to add to your shopping list now are:
Strawberries
Sweet potatoes
Brown rice
Black beans
Almonds
The FDF recently revealed its Action on Fibre initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between the nation's fibre intake and the dietary recommendation, has helped to add 1.5 billion portions of fibre to the nation's plates since 2021.
Since the initiative began in 2021, participating brands have brought 400 new products and recipes to supermarket shelves.
Kate Halliwell, Chief Scientific Officer, FDF said: "Boosting the amount of fibre in your diet is an easy win for your health. And food and drink brands are working hard to make it even simpler to do by developing recipes that help us all to get more fibre.

'We're proud of the impact our Action on Fibre campaign has had so far, but many people still aren't aware of just how important a high fibre diet is and there are only limited ways companies are allowed to highlight the fibre content of food.
"That's why we're calling for government, retailers and health charities to work together with food and drink businesses to make it easier for people to choose a high fibre diet.'
England is one the countries with the biggest rise in bowel cancer rates, according to a 2024 report in the journal Lancet Oncology.
Experts have blamed sedentary lifestyles, being overweight and obesity, smoking, heavy alcohol use, low-fibre, and high-fat diets or diets high in processed meats.

Alan, a car valeter from Marston Magna, had been three days into a family holiday in Zante with his partner Helen Whitemore, 62, Liza and her three daughters when he fell ill on July 5. He had an aching pain all down his side during dinner, which he thought was from throwing his stepdaughter's children around in the sea. The next morning he woke up breathless and went to a local medical clinic. After tests, doctors advised he return to the UK for a biopsy on a mass spotted in his right lung. But before they could leave, Alan deteriorated. His oxygen levels dropped to 36 per cent and he began fitting in his hospital bed. Doctors placed him on a non-invasive ventilato and have warned he may need to be put in a coma, but feared he wouldn't wake up due to his fragile lungs. Liza said: 'He looked dreadful, grey and pale. Everyone was petrified. Nobody knew what was going on.' The signs and symptoms of cancer Alan was airlifted by helicopter to a private hospital in Athens because he was too sick to fly commercially. But days later, the insurance company told the family they had checked Alan's UK medical records and discovered the lung mass had been noted by doctors back in December 2024, though they believed it was benign fatty tissue. That made it a 'pre-existing condition', something the family hadn't declared, because they thought it was harmless. Liza said: 'We know we've made the mistake, that's the problem. 'My mum had gone into the bank that she had insurance with and they said, 'just go on holiday, you don't have to do anything'. 'They didn't know about the mass. And he was well before, he was working as a car valeter the day before the holiday.' The insurance company agreed to cover the first five days of care in the Athens private hospital, racking up a £14,000 bill, before refusing further support. Alan has since been moved to a general hospital where treatment covered by his Global Health Insurance Card. But according to some people who were clinically pronounced dead for a certain amount of time, that's not always the case. One man, who was pronounced dead for six minutes before being brought back to life, claims that the afterlife is a truly terrible place. So, what did he see? (Picture: Getty) Although it is hard to measure, there have been a few studies looking into near death experiences. In general, people tend to describe sensations of seeing their life being replayed, having out-of-body experiences, dreaming and meditative states. The research of one psychiatrist, Dr Raymond Moody, reveals that hundreds of people described pleasant experiences in which they left their body, viewed themselves from above, and passed down a tunnel toward a light that helped them to evaluate their life before returning back to life (Picture: Getty) But writing on Reddit, a man describes the situation which occurred when he was just 15 years old. After an episode of ventricular fibrillation, which is a type of irregular heart rhythm, he collapsed. He was told after that the emergency medical service arrived to the scene and discovered that his heart had stopped beating - and although this state of 'death' lasted six minutes, the man claims he went on quite a journey in the viral post (Picture: Getty) The man said things began with a white light. The light initially calmed him, and he had a feeling that he was ascending. As he was doing so, he passed several gates, before arriving to a place he describes as 'beyond reality'. He thought he was not alone, and says that several 'life forces' came towards him. He wrote: 'At first, because of my Christian upbringing, I believed them to be angels. In my incorporeal form, I made the spiritually-equivalent gesture of opening my arms, anticipating their embrace.' However, it was not what he thought it was (Picture: Getty) The man goes on to explain that he felt himself to be shackled by the lifeform's powers, and feelings of humiliation and terror came over him. He realised that these beings were 'cruel, unsympathetic overlords' that laughed at him in a manner described as 'cold' and 'mocking'. And he said that the beings revealed some 'horrifying truths about existence' which he shared in the post (Picture: Getty) He wrote: 'Our universe, like many others running parallel to it, contains a pittance of the total energy in existence. It is a farm, used to produce souls, which only arise in the precise conditions found in our cosmos. When you hear scientists talk about the improbability of the existence of our goldilocks universe, it's because they don't actually come into being spontaneously. They're designed. And the hands that craft them are not benevolent gods, but rapacious beings with little care for the creatures they create. The man writes in the post that he was warned not to reveal their existence, but when he was revived, he tried to explain to anyone who would listen about what he experienced. However, he said he was brushed off, and was told he had suffered a very serious and traumatic experience for a young man. Eventually, he said he convinced himself it was all a dream. He continued: 'A flicker in his gaze betrayed his knowledge of the fact. He really had died and visited the afterlife, but lied about it in his book. Because he knew.' So, why did the man tell his story? He wrote: 'During my visit, I learned things about our universe that I wish I hadn't. Lily King, 18, from Buckinghamshire, tragically died after eating a carrot in a meal to celebrate top grades in her first year at Exeter University while on holiday in Morocco. While Lily's childhood had been dominated her allergies - along with eczema and asthma - she hadn't ever needed hospital treatment until five months prior to the holiday. She had bought a burger at a music festival in Exeter and suffered anaphylaxis – the most extreme allergic reaction, where rapid swelling in the throat and tongue cause breathing difficulties and sometimes cardiac arrest. Then, on the last night of their holiday last year, Lily discovered that she had received a first for her first-year exams and wanted to celebrate - so the pair decided to go out for a meal. Lily herself even said in Arabic: "I don't want to be killed," Aicha told the Mail. But when the food arrived, it came with vegetables and a sauce they hadn't asked for. She took an antihistamine and went to the bathroom, then used her EpiPen and went outside for some air.
