NASA explains how it keeps the Curiosity rover running, 13 years later
In a new post celebrating the 13th anniversary of the rover's landing, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has detailed the updates the Curiosity team has had to implement. To start with, the team manages the rover's daily power budget with great care to make sure it can do its job and last longer. See, Curiosity uses a power system called Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG), which relies on decaying plutonium pellets to generate energy. As the plutonium decays over time, it takes longer and longer for the system to recharge the rover's battery.
That's why the team now meticulously factors in every device that draws on the batteries. They consolidate Curiosity's tasks to shorten the time the rover is active to also reduce the energy used. The ground team, for instance, tells Curiosity to talk to an orbiter while driving or moving its robotic arm instead of doing one task at a time. If the rover finishes its tasks early, it can go to sleep early and recharge for the next day, which JPL says maximizes the life of the MMRTG.
Over the past years, NASA has also rolled out updates to change how the rover's robotic arm drill collects samples and to improve its driving capabilities. JPL developed an algorithm to reduce wear on the rover's wheels, as well, so they can last longer.
From the time Curiosity had landed on Mars, it has provided us with multiple discoveries and new information. It discovered organic molecules in Martian atmosphere and soil, detected "startlingly high" levels of methane that's a gas typically produced by life as we know it, and it found evidence of ancient megafloods on the red planet. And water, as you know, could indicate the presence of life.

SpaceX Crew-10 return delayed due to weather at splashdown site
Crew-10 astronauts are preparing to return to Earth on Friday after being onboard the international space station for over 140 days. NASA/UPI | License Photo Aug. 7 (UPI) -- SpaceX and NASA delayed the return of Crew-10 astronauts to Earth that was originally scheduled to begin on Thursday afternoon. The Crew-10's Dragon capsule, Endurance, will undock at 6:05 p.m. EDT on Friday for a 17.5-hour journey and is scheduled to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California at 11:33 a.m. Saturday. The crew was initially set to begin its return from ISS on Thursday at 12:05 p.m. EDT but the departure was delayed due to weather in the splashdown area. "Due to high winds at the splashdown sites off the coast of California, Dragon is standing down from today's undocking from the Space Station," SpaceX said in a post on X. "The spacecraft and Crew-10 crew remain healthy, and teams will continue to monitor weather conditions for the next available undocking opportunity." SpaceX's recovery ship Shannon will be on site to retrieve the capsule and its crew. Afterwards, the crew will be flown to Houston. Crew-10, which has been on the ISS for 140 days, will also be the first NASA ISS crewed mission to splash down in the Pacific Ocean. Crew-10's Anne McClain, Nichole Ayer, Takuya Onishi and Kirill Peskov had initially launched on March 14 and docked the ISS two days later. "Crew-10 has had the absolute privilege of working here for the last four months, and we have so much gratitude for all of the ground teams that showed up every day to make this possible," McClain said during a farewell ceremony on Tuesday on the ISS. "We truly are very humbled to represent humanity, and we hope that we can be a reminder to others of the goodness of humanity and what we really can accomplish when we work together," she added. Alongside the Crew-10, Endurance will be carrying home science samples on the Polar portable cold storage facility. SpaceX's Crew-11 members Zena Cardman, Mike Fincke, Kimiya Yui and Oleg Platonov have docked the ISS on Aug 2.

China tests spacecraft it hopes will put first Chinese on the moon
By Eduardo Baptista (Reuters) -China conducted its first test on Wednesday of a lunar lander that it hopes will put the first Chinese on the moon before 2030, the country's manned space program said. The lander's ascent and descent systems underwent comprehensive verification at a site in Hebei province that was designed to simulate the moon's surface. The test surface had special coating to mimic lunar soil reflectivity, as well as being covered with rocks and craters. "The test involved multiple operational conditions, a lengthy testing period, and high technical complexity, making it a critical milestone in the development of China's manned lunar exploration program," China Manned Space (CMS) said in a statement posted on its website on Thursday. The lunar lander, known as Lanyue, which means "embrace the moon" in Mandarin, will be used to transport astronauts between the lunar orbit and the moon's surface, as well as serving as a living space, power source, and data center after they land on the moon, CMS added. China has kept details closely guarded about its programme to achieve a manned landing on the moon, but the disclosure about the test comes at a time when the United States is looking to stave off the rapid advances of China's space program. NASA plans for its Artemis programme to send astronauts around the moon and back in April 2026, with a subsequent moon landing mission a year later. China's uncrewed missions to the moon in the past five years have allowed the country to become the only nation to retrieve lunar samples from both the near and far side of the moon. Those missions have drawn interest from the European Space Agency, NASA-funded universities, and national space agencies from Pakistan to Thailand. A successful manned landing before 2030 would boost China's plans to build a "basic model" of the International Lunar Research Station by 2035.
