Harvey Elliott admits ‘conversation' needs to be had over Liverpool future to avoid ‘wasting' career on the bench
HARVEY ELLIOTT warned Arne Slot he won't 'waste' his career and watch from the bench at Liverpool. The attacker, 22, collected a Premier League title medal this term at Anfield but played just 360 minutes across 18 appearances. 3 3 The boyhood Reds fan is in Slovakia as part of the England U21 squad looking to defend their European Championship crown for what could be the start of a big summer. A host of clubs are considering making a move for the £45m-rated ex-Fulham man and he admitted he may have to leave for the good of his career. Elliott said: 'It's just a situation that me and the team on my behalf have to have a conversation about. 'I'm coming into an age now where I'm 22, I'm going to be 23 next season and I don't really want to be wasting years on my career because it's a short career. You don't know what's going to happen. Touch wood it doesn't, but injuries and things, it could shorten it. 'It's a situation that, as I've said before, I need to reflect. I need to see if I'm content in doing what I'm doing and how can I improve as a player because that's the most important thing. That's the main thing, really. 'I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself and the best player I can be. If that's to go somewhere else, then it's a decision that I'm going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.' Elliott, who came through QPR's academy before making the move to Fulham prior to being snapped up by Liverpool in 2019, added: 'Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But as I said, most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career. I just need to make that decision.' One of the highlights of Elliott's campaign, which was delayed due to a fractured foot, came in the Champions League. He scored a last-ditch winner at Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 first leg just 47 seconds after replacing Mohamed Salah, but even that moment failed to convince Slot to hand him a start in the next game. He said: 'PSG was kind of a high for me, especially with the Premier League game coming up a few days later. I thought maybe it was an opportunity for me to get a start and to showcase what I can do and just get a nice run out. Trent Alexander-Arnold breaks down in tears and kisses badge as he gets emotional send-off from Liverpool fans 'The boss is the boss. He's the man in charge. He's the reason why we've won the league, because of his decisions. I can't complain. I just need to make sure I'm ready and to keep going.' One man who does have total faith in Elliott is Lee Carsley, the man he enjoyed Euro success with two years ago. Elliott and Charlie Cresswell are the only survivors from that squad in Slovakia and the Liverpool man says he is loving the leadership role he has. He added: 'I've always taken that role in my stride. Not only for myself, I want the whole team to do well. I want all the players to do well. 'Everyone's got quality here. We have one aim and one goal, which is to win it. I'll try as hard as I can to make sure that happens.' England kick-off their Euro campaign against the Czech Republic on Thursday and then face Slovenia three days later and finish the group stage against Germany on Wednesday 18 June. All of the Young Lions' matches are being broadcast on Channel 4.

Football transfer rumours: Grealish to Everton? Chelsea to make second Gittens bid?
Gianni Infantino's not-at-all-confusing first transfer window of the summer slams shut at the end of Tuesday, so teams involved in his cherished new Club World Cup are scrambling to complete deals ahead of a tournament they're not sure they care about. Chelsea are reportedly in talks with Borussia Dortmund over the signing of Jamie Gittens. The German club, said to be looking for a fee of upwards of £40m for the winger, have rejected an opening bid from Chelsea of just short of £30m. Bit of a gap to bridge there, then. Gittens, 20, is an England youth international and – as is often the case – spent a period in the Chelsea academy. Chelsea are thought to be delving into their reserves to make a second cash offer. As they aim to close deals for Wolves' Rayan Aït-Nouri and Milan's Tijjani Reijnders, Manchester City are trying their best to offload Jack Grealish before jetting off to the States this week. Everton are said to be interested in the winger, with the club's new owners keen to bring in a stellar name to play alongside other superstars like James Tarkowski, James Garner and Beto when David Moyes' side move into their new stadium this summer. Grealish scored a whopping three goals in 32 appearances in all competitions for City last season, so you get the feeling that he'd fit right in at the prestigious Hill Dickinson Stadium. In the north east, Newcastle are reportedly turning their attention to Brighton's João Pedro in order to bolster their squad to make a better fist of the Champions League this coming campaign. Another of Eddie Howe's attacking targets, Bryan Mbeumo, appears unable to resist the lure of Manchester United, which has left João Pedro as a top target at St James' Park. Surely the clearest evidence that the Brazilian could be on his way is the bid that Brighton are said to have made for Charalampos Kostoulas. Yes, that Charalampos Kostoulas. The 18-year-old Olympiakos striker, who scored six goals in 21 league games last season, has been the subject of a bid worth £34m from the Seagulls. He would be the second teenage Greek forward to move to Brighton this year after Stefanos Tzimas was signed from PAOK in January. Do they know something we don't? Harvey Elliott, who is heading off to the Under-21 European Championship this summer despite being, what, 28 by now, appears to be angling for some more playing time at Liverpool and/or an exit. Elliott made just two league starts for the Premier League champions last season and has said: 'I don't really want to be wasting years on my career because it's a short career. You don't know what's going to happen.' After apparently rejecting a move to Nottingham Forest recently, the midfielder could be more likely to seek his fortune abroad. Let's call it the Scott McTominay effect. Or Jude Bellingham – whatever. Arsenal have spent much of the first window working on tying up a deal for Martín Zubimendi. Real Madrid, as they are wont to do sometimes, are apparently trying to muscle in on these negotiations. The Real Sociedad midfielder has already rejected one move to England, turning down Liverpool last summer. Maybe it's the food. And who can blame him? Cristiano Ronaldo is one player who will not be featuring at the Club World Cup. The now two-time Nations League winner has all but confirmed that he will be staying at Al-Nassr. 'Basically nothing is going to change,' the 40-year-old said after Portugal's penalty shootout win against Spain in Munich, once he'd stopped crying obviously. Joining Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia this summer could be Jadon Sancho. Al-Hilal, whose current wide options include the former Barcelona icon Malcom and Saudi Arabia's World Cup hero against Argentina Salem Al-Dawsari, are reportedly pursuing Sancho as well as Liverpool's Luis Díaz, Tottenham's Son Heung-min and Sporting's Viktor Gyökeres. Perhaps these players can be enticed by the prospect of being comfortably beaten but not humiliated by Real Madrid in their Club World Cup opener in Miami. Who knows, maybe they'd even get to meet Gianni.

Lions will target promotion push, says boss Neil
Alex Neil has set his sights on a sustained Millwall promotion challenge next season after agreeing a new deal at The Lions surged up the Championship table following Neil's arrival in December and finished in eighth place, missing out on the play-offs by just two the 44-year-old, who guided Norwich into the Premier League a decade ago and oversaw Sunderland's League One play-off success in 2022, believes Millwall can build on their momentum next season."We're not here just to make up the numbers and be a bit unfortunate," he told BBC London 94.9. "Our plan and hope is to take that next step and be a team that's going to compete to try and get out of this division."We're not going to do it by outspending our opponents, we're going to do it by gradually building and if you do it that way, it gives you a little bit more longevity."It's easy to find a bit of money to get there but, if the foundations are built on sand, it doesn't last particularly long."Irrespective of how next year goes, I think it's a really exciting time to be a Millwall fan – we've got so many good young players, so many assets on the horizon coming through."One of the Lions' best homegrown assets, midfielder Romain Esse, departed for Crystal Palace within weeks of Neil's arrival – but the squad regrouped to secure a sixth top-half finish in eight manager added: "The camaraderie, togetherness and drive and determination of the players was vital – and the supporters as well, in some of those away games where we really needed points."Certainly by the end of the season we started to create that at home as well, winning five on the bounce. You need to put the team first, even if at times it doesn't suit your own narrative."I felt that's what the players did for me, for each other, for the fans and that's a great starting platform."
