ARLINGTON, Tex. — Baby Ohtani is on their way. The Los Angeles Dodgers put Shohei Ohtani on the paternity list on Friday as the three-time MVP and his wife, Mamiko, await the birth of their first child.
Ohtani can be on the list for up to three days, but could be back by the end of the Dodgers' weekend series against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field, manager Dave Roberts said. The Dodgers selected veteran outfielder Eddie Rosario to take Ohtani's spot on the active roster. Right-handed reliever Edgardo Henriquez was transferred to the 60-day injured list to clear a 40-man roster spot.

Ohtani first announced on Instagram in January that he and Mamiko were expecting their first child, with their dog, Decoy, posing alongside a pink onesie. The reigning NL MVP has hit .288, with six home runs and a .930 OPS through the Dodgers' first 20 games of the season. He's also continued his rehab from a second major elbow surgery, progressing to the stage of throwing bullpens. He is still likely months away from his return to a big league mound.
The 30-year-old stayed back in Los Angeles when the Dodgers left for this recent road trip to be by his wife's side. Soon, he'll officially add fatherhood to his growing list of responsibilities and accolades in his time with the Dodgers.
'He's a very good compartmentalizer but he loves his sleep,' Roberts said of Ohtani. 'It'll be interesting to see how the sleep wins out or doesn't win out when you have a baby.'

Freeman, 35, appears to be hitting better as he ages. Meanwhile, Alonso has earned two All-Star selections the last two season despited posting an OPS below .800 last season and hitting just .211 in 2023. The 2025 campaign appears to be unfolding into Alonso's best performance yet in the batters box. Alonso is hitting .301 with 17 home runs, 61 runs batted in, and a .990 OPS this season. For Schoenfield, Alonso being more effective in high-leverage gives him the edge over Freeman. "This is a coin flip, especially because Freeman spent time on the injured list early this season," Schoenfield writes.
