Mortada Mansour sentenced to 6 months in prison for slandering Khatib

The Economic Court in Cairo on Monday ruled to imprison the former president of Zamalek Club, Mortada Mansour, for six months, after he was convicted of slandering the president of Al-Ahly Club, Mahmoud al-Khatib, and the club's legal advisor, Mohamed Othman.
The court also ruled to fine Mansour LE40,000 and oblige him to pay LE 20,000 as temporary compensation to those he slandered.
Background of the dispute
The dispute between Mansour and Khatib has resulted in numerous legal cases, the most prominent of which was the ruling issued in February 2023, when the Court of Cassation rejected Mansour's appeal against a previous ruling to imprison him for a month over insulting and defaming Khatib.
The ruling was then implemented and Mansour was deported to the Wadi al-Natrun prison, which led to his dismissal from the presidency of Zamalek Club by virtue of a court ruling.
In November 2024, the Economic Court then issued two separate rulings obligating Mansour to pay financial compensation to Khatib, one in the amount of LE 500,000, and the other in the amount of one million Egyptian pounds, due to the cases of slander and defamation filed against him by the president of Ahly Club.
Other pending cases
Courts are still considering other cases between the two parties.
Earlier this March, the Economic Court considered six new lawsuits filed by Khatib and others against Mansour, accusing him of defamation and slander.
Ten other cases filed by Al-Ahly Club's legal advisor, Othman, regarding offensive statements attributed to Mansour were also adjourned.

Egypt honours driver who died after averting fuel tanker disaster

An Egyptian tanker driver who steered his burning vehicle away from a residential area has died from his injuries, prompting the government to announce financial rewards and other honours for his family. Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly mourned the driver, Khaled Mohamed Shawky, who died on Saturday from injuries sustained during the incident in 10th of Ramadan City, north of Cairo. Last week, Shawky was inside his fuel tanker at a petrol station when the tank exploded due to high temperatures. He immediately got into the driver's seat and drove the burning vehicle away from the station and nearby residential areas. He succeeded in preventing a wider disaster but was severely injured when the truck was engulfed in flames. In a statement, the prime minister's office expressed its condolences to the driver's family, describing Shawky as 'a symbol of sacrifice and quick thinking in a highly dangerous situation, which prevented many casualties and destruction, and saved many lives and properties.' Madbouly has directed the ministers of petroleum and social solidarity to arrange a 'generous reward' and an 'exceptional pension' for the driver's family. 'The government, and the Egyptian people in general, appreciate these shining examples in society and are keen to elevate their status so that they may be a role model for others,' Madbouly said. In a separate move, Alaa Abdellah, the head of the 10th of Ramadan City Development Authority, announced that a street in the city would be named after Shawky to honour his memory. The Minister of Social Solidarity, Maya Morsi, also announced a payment of EGP 100,000 to the family and confirmed that an exceptional pension would be provided. News of Shawky's death brought sadness to his hometown of Bani Ubaid in the northern Daqahliya province, where residents prepared for his funeral. Shawky was a father of three, and his family had been planning his son's wedding for the 19th of next month.

When Sharks Collide: Robert Herjavec Meets Abdallah Sallam

StartupScene brings together Shark Tank America's Robert Herjavec and Egypt's Abdallah Sallam for a one-of-a-kind crossover conversation between two sharks who know how to spot a winner. Jun 09, 2025 What happens when the worlds of Shark Tank US and Shark Tank Egypt finally meet? In an exclusive for StartupScene in Cairo, we brought together Robert Herjavec, investor and longtime Shark on the hit American show Shark Tank, with Abdallah Sallam, President & CEO of Madinat Masr and one of the leading faces of Shark Tank Egypt. Together, they sat down for a wide-ranging conversation about startups, instincts, risks, deals that got away, and what it really means to back a founder. The chemistry was instant. The stories? Unfiltered. And the insights? Worth taking notes. From Robert's reflections on investing in founders who 'have something to prove,' to Abdallah's take on what makes a startup scale in the MENA region, this wasn't your average media interview. It was a genuine peer-to-peer exchange between two business minds who know what it means to put skin in the game. They talked candidly about what sets the Egyptian ecosystem apart, how entrepreneurs in emerging markets pitch differently, and why venture capital is as much about pattern recognition as it is about gut instinct. There were laughs, eye rolls, comparisons, and shared lessons from opposite sides of the globe - filmed right here in Cairo. This exclusive conversation marks a rare moment: the crossover of two global formats, two distinct markets, and two investors who rarely get a moment to just talk. No timers. No pitches. Just two sharks comparing notes - and giving us a front-row seat.
