El Paso County Regional Training Academy holds graduation ceremony
(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — Law enforcement from across Southern Colorado graduated from the El Paso County Regional Training Academy on Friday, March 28.
The academy is offered to law enforcement across the state free of charge, and law enforcement say it is a great way for agencies in other districts to build relationships.
The Fremont and Teller County Sheriff's Offices, the Department of Corrections, and the Fountain Police were some of the agencies that benefited from the training.
'This academy is the best in the state of Colorado, if not the American southwest,' said Sheriff Alan Cooper of Fremont County. 'And the instruction and the training that my deputies get at this academy make their lives safe, the lives of my citizens safer, and helps me to reduce crime, which is my main purpose.'
Sheriff Cooper added that the academy has helped maintain staffing levels at his office.

The Trump administration is sanctioning El Chapo's children and Los Chapitos – a fentanyl trafficking faction of the violent Sinaloa cartel, Fox News Digital has learned. The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Los Chapitos, which controls laboratories responsible for introducing fentanyl in counterfeit pills manufactured by the Sinaloa cartel and trafficked to the United States. Gunmen linked to the Sinaloa cartel were involved in the Oct. 18, 2024, killing of U.S. Marine veteran Nicholas Quets in Sonora, Mexico. Additionally, the Treasury Department designated the two sons of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera: Archivaldo Ivan Guzman Salazar and Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar. "Los Chapitos is a powerful, hyperviolent faction of the Sinaloa cartel at the forefront of fentanyl trafficking in the United States," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday. "At the Department of the Treasury, we are executing on President Trump's mandate to completely eliminate drug cartels and take on violent leaders like 'El Chapo's' children." Bessent added that the Treasury Department is "maximizing all available tools to stop the fentanyl crisis and help save lives." The Treasury Department on Monday also sanctioned a regional network of Los Chapitos associates and businesses based in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, that allegedly engages in drug tracking, extortion, kidnapping and money laundering. The Treasury Department coordinated with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to take the action Monday. Nicholas Douglas Quets, a 31-year-old Marine veteran who worked for Pima County, Arizona, on water reclamation projects, was shot and killed along the Caborca-Altar Highway in northern Mexico on Oct. 18, 2024. Quets' father, Doug, who served 20 years in the U.S. Army and another 20 years in federal law enforcement, expressed his family's "deep and enduring gratitude to President Trump and his entire Cabinet for unwaveringly using every instrument of national power in the pursuit of justice for our beloved Nicholas." "Nicholas Quets was an innocent American and proud U.S. Marine veteran whose bright future was stolen on October 18, 2024, when he was ambushed just south of the U.S. border by a heavily armed cell of the Sinaloa cartel," Quets said in a statement. "Cowards in cartel insignia – more than two dozen strong – pursued Nicholas and fatally shot him in the back, through the heart, during a failed carjacking, only after confirming his status as an American." Quets added: "This was not just murder – it was a deliberate act of terror against a known American citizen." Quets said the Treasury Department's designation of the Sinaloa cartel as a foreign terrorist organization was a "vital first step in honoring Nicholas' memory and protecting other Americans from suffering similar tragedies." "Secretary Bessent's decisive action to target the Sinaloa cartel's financial networks strikes at the heart of this transnational threat," Quets said. "Disrupting their ability to move money, launder profits and bribe officials is essential to dismantling this criminal empire."

Newsom: Pentagon lying over LA to justify National Guard deployment
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Monday accused the Defense Department of 'lying to the American people' in justifying deploying National Guard troops to the state to quell Los Angeles protests against federal immigration raids, asserting that the situation intensified only when the Pentagon deployed troops. 'The situation became escalated when THEY deployed troops,' Newsom posted to X, referring to the Pentagon. 'Donald Trump has manufactured a crisis and is inflaming conditions. He clearly can't solve this, so California will.' Newsom was responding to a post from DOD Rapid Response on X, a Pentagon-run account, which claimed that 'Los Angeles is burning, and local leaders are refusing to respond.' President Trump on Saturday deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to the Los Angeles area amid the ICE protests, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying the decision was made due to 'violent mobs' attacking 'Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations.' While protests have intensified in recent days, devolving at times into violence, the majority of gatherings have been largely peaceful. Still, California National Guard troops began arriving in Los Angeles on Sunday morning, with some 300 deployed on the ground later that day at three locations: Los Angeles proper, Paramount and Compton. White House officials have sought to highlight images of burning vehicles and clashes with law enforcement to make the case that the situation had gotten out of control. 'LA is on FIRE right now, but instead of tackling the issue, Gavin Newsom is spending his time attacking Secretary Hegseth,' Parnell wrote. 'Unlike Newsom, [Hegseth] isn't afraid to lead.' Newsom, who has formally demanded the Trump administration pull the National Guard troops off the streets, has declared the deployment 'unlawful' and said California will sue the Trump administration over its actions. 'There is currently no need for the National Guard to be deployed in Los Angeles, and to do so in this unlawful manner and for such a lengthy period is a serious breach of state sovereignty that seems intentionally designed to inflame the situation,' David Sapp, Newsom's legal affairs secretary, wrote in a letter to Hegseth on Sunday. 'Accordingly, we ask that you immediately rescind your order and return the National Guard to its rightful control by the State of California, to be deployed as appropriate when necessary.' In the past 60 years, a U.S. president has only on one occasion mobilized a state's National Guard troops without the consent of its governor to quell unrest or enforce the law. That was in 1965, when former President Lyndon Johnson sent Guard members to Selma, Ala., to protect civil rights protesters there.
