Juneteenth in Chicago: Ric Wilson, line dancing and Ashanti

Juneteenth is more than just a holiday. It's a celebration of freedom, community and the rich tapestry of Black culture that continues to shape Chicago and the rest of the country. This year, the city is embracing that spirit with an eclectic array of events that honor the past while creating space for joy, connection and artistic expression. From line dancing celebrations that bring generations together to experimental musical and sensory experiences that push creative boundaries to all-night silent discos, Chicago's Juneteenth offerings focus on community-building in the present and reflect the diversity and vibrancy of the Black experience in all its forms. If you're looking for something a little different, consider 'Freedom Lullabies.' Presented by The Nap Ministry and the experimental Black orchestral group D-Composed, Freedom Lullabies is dubbed as a 'rest experience' melding revolutionary text with the sounds of Black composers. During the event, the D-Composed string quartet will perform selections from a number of Black composers while Nap Ministry founder Tricia Hersey reads the words of figures like authors bell hooks and Zora Neale Hurston. The audience is encouraged to rest during this dual performance while taking in the words of liberation. This event is intended for members of the African diaspora. Guests are asked to bring yoga mats, blankets and other items that provide you've been living under a rock, you've likely seen the 'Boots on the Ground' line dance take over social media. Superstar Beyoncé even features a quick clip of the accompanying track by 803Fresh during her ongoing 'Cowboy Carter' tour. Now, you'll get the chance to learn and dance to this new classic Black line dance along with other favorites like The Wobble, Cha Cha Slide, Tamia Line Dance and the Electric Slide during this two-hour dance party and dance class. Guests are encouraged to let loose in this inclusive celebration of Black rhythm, joy and and Gen-Xers are sure to get a kick out of this mega concert featuring some of the most beloved names in late '90s and early 2000s R&B and hip hop. Chicago success story Donell Jones is sure to rock the house down with his Classick R&B kickback tunes like you know what's up. I'm particularly excited for the latter acts, Mya, Lil Kim and headliner Ashanti. In their prime, all three made distinctly catchy and vibe-shifting music that defined youth culture at the turn of the millennium. Fans who may have missed them live while they were teens will surely get a special treat seeing them here. For a jam-packed Juneteenth, this late-night show is a perfect cap to the Chicago hip hop act Ric Wilson's rise has been steady and sure. It's no surprise that in recent years, listeners both inside and outside of the city have latched on to his sound. Wilson is deft at blending his easygoing flow with earworm-like beats. Many of his tracks are pure dance floor fodder, the sort of tunes that are meant to set the room on fire and keep the energy bumping throughout the evening. That's why this special Juneteenth set is sure to be a delight for audiences. Anticipate tracks from his latest album, 'America Runs on Disco,' which is set to drop the very next day. Prepare to community across the diaspora during this unique Juneteenth celebration centering collective Black freedom and cross-cultural music. Featuring DJ sets by Calid B, Nick Jones and Dyaspara, this special and free edition of SupAfrique will feature drinks, dancing, food and fun. Arrive early to receive a free portrait from photographer Sulyiman Stokes, whose work homes in on the vastness and humanity of Black life. According to event organizers, Stokes aims to document what freedom looks like, a fitting mission for any Juneteenth because it's a silent party doesn't mean it won't be a good time. That's the goal of the silent 'Freed Up, Turnt Up' party. Presented by Urban Fetes, this special Juneteenth silent dance party will have three channels featuring trap, R&B and twerk-focused music. Whether you're looking for a chill and downtempo groove or an all-night sweat fest, this party is sure to make your Juneteenth week of festivities one to remember. Mariska Hargitay will reveal past secrets, new family at 'My Mom Jayne' premiere

Mariska Hargitay will reveal past secrets, new family at 'My Mom Jayne' premiere Mariska Hargitay will introduce her extended family and "My Mom Jayne" at Tribeca Film Festival on June 13. And it's going to be big. The "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" star makes her directing debut with the powerful and poignant documentary about her late mother, actress and bombshell Jayne Mansfield. "My Mom Jayne" airs June 27 on HBO after making its world premiere at May's Cannes Film Festival in France to acclaim and global headlines. Hargitay and her siblings, who speak about their mother for the first time on camera in the documentary, will attend the premiere at Carnegie Hall, which will conclude with a discussion featuring Hargitay. Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox "I'm so excited to share this story and share my gorgeous family, these hearts and souls, with the world," Hargitay tells USA TODAY in an interview for an upcoming profile. "My family is coming in and I can't wait to hold them. Because we have been through something together." Which family members appear in Mariska Hargitay's documentary 'My Mom Jayne'? Hargitay goes on a journey to rediscover her famous mother, who died in 1967 at age 34 in a car crash that has become the tragic fodder of Hollywood legend. Hargitay, 3 at the time, survived the horrific crash along with her two brothers, but has no memories of her mother. In "My Mom Jayne," Hargitay speaks with her older brothers from Mansfield's marriage to bodybuilder and actor Mickey Hargitay − Mickey Jr. and Zoltan − as well as older half-sister Jayne Marie Mansfield (from Jayne's first marriage to Paul Mansfield). The family discusses memories of their mother and life in Mansfield's famed Pink Palace home on Sunset Boulevard, which featured a heart-shaped pool and exotic animals. To complete one family circle, the documentary features Hargitay's youngest half-sibling, Anthony Cimber, from Mansfield's brief marriage to her third husband, Italian director Matt Cimber. Just speaking with the famous family for the first time on camera about the life and death of the complex and misunderstood Mansfield, as well as discussing devoted father Hargitay, would make for a compelling documentary. But there's much more to "My Mom Jayne." 'My Mom Jayne' reveals a secret about Jayne Mansfield that Mariska Hargitay kept for 30 years Most headlines surrounding the documentary have centered on the revelation about Hargitay's biological father, which the actress kept secret for more than three decades. In 1963, Mansfield became romantically involved with singer Nelson Sardelli amid her divorce from Mickey Hargitay. Mansfield and Hargitay reconciled late in 1963, and Mariska was born in January 1964. The actress has always called Hargitay, who lovingly raised her after Mansfield's death, "my rock." (Mickey Hargitay, who died in 2006, even guest-starred on a Season 5 episode of "SVU" with his famous daughter.) However, in the documentary, Hargitay discusses her life-altering discovery that Sardelli was her biological father and recounts her decision to dramatically confront the singer in Atlantic City 30 years ago. There were Hollywood whispers that Sardelli was Hargitay's father, including a mention in a tell-all book about Mansfield written by her former publicist, Rusty Strait (who is also interviewed). But Hargitay and Sardelli came to terms and agreed to keep silent. Until now. Hargitay has remained quietly close to Sardelli and his daughters Giovanna and Pietra, from his marriage to Fledia, his wife of 47 years. Sardelli and Hargitay's newly revealed half-sisters all appear in "My Mom Jayne" and are expected to attend the Tribeca premiere. The revelation of these relationships has been freeing to Hargitay. The "SVU" veteran concedes it was a sometimes "bumpy road to get here. But it has paid off. Once you open the door and shed a bit of light on something, the beauty that comes from the scariest places is extraordinary." Even before heading to the premiere with her family, Hargitay feels relieved that the secret is out. "I feel like this 1,000-pound weight has been lifted," she says. "There's this sense of integration and peace about it. There are all these beautiful heartstrings that connect our hearts together. I'm just taking in the moment now." Who else will attend the Tribeca premiere of 'My Mom Jayne'? Hargitay's husband of more than two decades, actor Peter Hermann, will attend. The couple met on the set of "Law & Order: SVU" and have three children: Miklós Friedrich, Amaya Josephine and Andrew Nicolas. "SVU" stars Ice-T and Christopher Meloni will also support their co-star, along with celebrities including Jon Hamm, Carrie-Anne Moss and Brooke Shields. Where can I stream 'My Mom Jayne'? "My Mom Jayne" airs June 27 on HBO (8 EST/PST) and will stream on HBO Max.

The 5 best TV shows to watch with your dad this Father's Day

The 5 best TV shows to watch with your dad this Father's Day Show Caption Hide Caption The surprising origins of Father's Day The very first Father's Day in America was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. unbranded - Lifestyle Get out the grill accessories, the tacky ties and the golf clubs, because Sunday, June 15 is Father's Day. The annual holiday celebrating all things dad is a great day to spend barbecuing, going to a ball game or just hanging out on the couch with the old man, binge-watching a show that has his very same vibes. We're talking science fiction, history, cop shows, spy shows and, of course, Gary Oldman. We're talking shows that celebrate the bond between father and child (or father and adopted alien), shows that celebrate the very best of dads and men everywhere, and shows that contain no awkward moments or mature content that will have you hiding behind your hands in embarrassment. We're talking "Star Wars," "Star Trek" and hours of entertainment that will bring you and your father closer together. Please enjoy our top five picks for shows to watch with your dad this Father's Day, giving him the gift of something you can talk (and argue about) over dinner. If your dad likes 'Star Wars': 'The Mandalorian' "Star Wars" and "dads" go together like blue milk and Luke Skywalker, and have since the first film came out in 1977. The recent group of TV series from Disney's Lucasfilm has also landed squarely in the paternal category, particularly the first and most literal dad show of them all: "The Mandalorian." Pedro Pascal's helmeted galactic warrior is doing dad duty to young Grogu, aka "Baby Yoda," a little green Force-wielding toddler who likes to eat frogs and cause mayhem. A gritty and violent tale about what a father would do to protect his child from a big, bad world, "Mandalorian" is gruff and lovable all at once. It's a genre Pascal is acutely suited to, and can also be seen in his HBO post-apocalyptic zombie series, "The Last of Us" (streaming on Max), albeit with far more gore. How to watch 'The Mandalorian' Seasons 1-3 now streaming on Disney+ If your dad prefers 'Star Trek': 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' If your dad is more "Trekkie" than "rebel scum," it's worth checking out the very best "Trek" series of this century. "Strange" is everything that is good about the franchise spawned by Gene Roddenberry's hopeful 1960s sci-fi series, without the annoying baggage. "Strange" is colorful, joyful, surprising and nostalgic all at once, chronicling the voyages of the Enterprise captained by Chris Pike (Anson Mount) in the years before a certain Captain Kirk came aboard (a young version of James Kirk shows up now and again, played by Paul Wesley). Captain Pike gives off serious dad energy as he leads the crew of the iconic starship through the final frontier. The series includes young and aptly cast versions of Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) as well as likable new characters. How to watch 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Seasons 1-2 now streaming on Paramount+. Season 3 premieres July 17. If your dad is super into World War II history: 'Masters of the Air' Produced by the same team that brought dads HBO's "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific," Apple TV+'s meticulous 2024 epic details the story of airmen diligently fighting in World War II. The slick series, populated with young up-and-comer actors led by Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan and Anthony Boyle, follows men from the 100th Bomber Group, who flew dangerous raids into enemy territory and were far more likely than infantrymen to be killed or missing in action. The nine-part limited series tells a harrowing and sobering story with a perspective you may not have seen before, even in all those World War II dramas of decades past. How to watch 'Masters of the Air' Now streaming on Apple TV+. If your dad is into spy stuff: 'Slow Horses' Gary Oldman is probably your dad's favorite actor. It's just one of the immutable dad facts, and his skill is on display in this British spy black comedy set in Slough House, where all the disgraced and washed-out spies are sent by the clandestine British service. It's meant to be a place of administrative drudgery with zero action, and yet, led by the affectionately abrasive Jackson Lamb (Oldman), Slough House and its slow horses somehow get involved in some of the most important cases of the moment. Come for Oldman, stay for the rest of the charming cast and the tongue-in-cheek humor. How to watch 'Slow Horses' Seasons 1-4 now streaming on Apple TV+. The series has been renewed for a fifth season, due in September. If your dad likes easy watching: 'Bosch' Amazon Prime Video is known for making an entire subgenre of TV affectionately referred to as "dad shows." They include "Jack Ryan," "Reacher," "Patriot" and the original dad show to out-dad-show them all: "Bosch." Based on the books by Michael Connelly about LAPD detective Harry Bosch (brought to life in glowering glory by Titus Welliver), it features a cop who plays by the rules when they are convenient but follows his own moral code. Welliver's husky, haggard portrayal of the detective has kept the series going for seven seasons (2015-21), and inspired two spinoffs, "Bosch: Legacy" (essentially a sequel) and the upcoming "Ballard" (streaming July 9). How to watch 'Bosch' Seasons 1-7 now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
