NFL shines spotlight on flag football as the draft takes over Green Bay
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — While the NFL draft takes over Titletown and Lambeau Field, the league is leveraging the excitement surrounding its premier offseason event to promote flag football.
Former NFL players Bobby Taylor and Mike Daniels led a flag football training clinic for students on Tuesday.
Draft prospects along with more former players participated in another flag football skills clinic that included 75 Special Olympics athletes on Wednesday.
Six high school girls' flag football players will also be backstage Thursday night to hand off hats to the prospects who are drafted. On Saturday, girls flag players from Oneida Nation High School will announce one of the draft picks on stage thanks to Packers quarterback Jordan Love and Toyota.
'Having the NFL draft here in Green Bay, and obviously, flag football, especially girls flag football, it's a growing sport,' Love said. 'So we're giving a girls flag football team in the area of Green Bay the opportunity to come out, get on stage during Day 3 of the NFL draft, actually go up there and announce a draft pick. We are empowering them and hopefully giving them an opportunity to visualize what a future in football looks like and making it to that pinnacle of the top.'
Love has also teamed up with Toyota, presenting sponsor of NFL Flag League Play, to increase opportunities for flag football players. They're covering registration fees for all NFL Flag teams within a 25-mile radius of the Green Bay area.
The NFL's goals of expanding flag football starts with Commissioner Roger Goodell. The league played a major role in getting flag football included in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
'Flag football has been growing dramatically here in the states as well as internationally,' Goodell said earlier this month. 'It's brought young women into the sport and it's given them a chance to play, which I think is incredibly valuable to our future and rewarding. So now to put it on that Olympic stage is really putting a seal of approval. And frankly it's going to be a stage where a lot of athletes are going to want to participate in, including former and current players, so we'll to have to work through it. I think it's a great opportunity for the athletes, a great opportunity for the NFL and I think it'll be a great opportunity for people to understand football and what it brings to the world.'
Many NFL star players have already said they'd like to play flag football in the Olympics. But the league and the players' union still have to figure out if that's possible.

Olympian Simone Biles apologized to Riley Gaines. I'm Tomi Lahren, more next. Well this feud could possibly end on a high note, after all. Olympic gymnast Simone Biles did the right thing and publicly apologized to Riley Gaines for body shaming her AND even somewhat acknowledged that the current system of biological men competing in women's sports doesn't adequately balance competitive equity. Biles did stop short of defending the integrity of women's sports and spaces, which is regrettable. However, the public apology and accountability was a refreshing change of pace. For her part, Gaines accepted the apology and warmly invited Biles to join the fight to protect women's sports. Look, it would've been great to see Biles commit to the fight for fairness and use her incredible platform to advance it, but I am happy to see this feud end. Biles is no doubt a role model for girls and young women, I was taken aback at her initial behavior and especially her body shaming digs. It takes a lot of courage to publicly own that and say sorry. Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hildebrandt leads new Real American Freestyle wrestling signees
Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hildebrandt headlines a group of four women who have signed with Real American Freestyle wrestling. Hildebrandt became the fourth American woman to win a gold medal in Olympic wrestling when she defeated Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba in the 50-kilogram final last year in Paris. Other signees the new company announced Thursday are Olympic silver medalist Lucía 'Jami' Yepez Guzman, Audrey Jimenez and Zeltin Hernandez Guerra. They join Kennedy Blades, a silver medalist for the United States at the Paris Olympics, as the anchors of the women's division. 'Real American Freestyle was created to trailblaze, and these incredible women joining our roster are a critical part of that,' RAF commissioner Hulk Hogan said in a statement. Yepez Guzman, who is from Ecuador, was a silver medalist at the Paris Olympics. She also won gold at the 2023 Pan American Games, the 2021 Junior Pan American Games and the 2021 U23 World Wrestling Championships. Jimenez, 19, was a U.S. Olympic Trials runner-up. She was the first female to win an Arizona state championship in the boys division. She won the 2025 Senior Pan American Championships at 50 kilograms last month, with a win over Guzman Lopez in the semifinals. Hernandez Guerra is a Mexican who won gold at the U23 Pan American Championships last year. Real American Freestyle events will feature matches at eight men's and four women's weight classes. Seahawks DT Byron Murphy II tabbed for breakout season The Seattle Seahawks are expecting a developmental step forward from sophomore defensive tackle Byron Murphy II this year. Murphy looked effective when healthy, but an injury derailed a sizable portion of his rookie campaign. The No. 16 overall selection in the 2024 NFL draft is now entering a big second season. Pro Football Focus recently compiled a 2025 NFL All-Breakout Team. They selected one player at each position. Murphy was their choice at defensive tackle. "Many thought that Mike Macdonald had found his white whale out west when the Seahawks drafted Murphy 16th overall in 2024," Bradley Locker wrote. "After one year, that hasn't looked like the case, but it isn't time to panic yet. In Year 1, the former Texas star earned just a 57.8 overall PFF grade with a 64.5 PFF pass-rushing grade. Murphy also played only 457 snaps in 14 games, ceding time to Leonard Williams and Jarran Reed — each of whom returns to the team in 2025." A deeper dive into the analytics reveals Murphy was more effective than meets the eye. "There are still a bevy of reasons to get excited about Murphy, including his 70.0 PFF pass-rushing grade on true pass sets, 10% pass-rush win rate and 76th percentile run stop rate," Locker continued. "Macdonald helped Nnamdi Madubuike break out in earnest during the 2023 season, which was Macdonald's second in Baltimore. Perhaps Murphy will follow a similar arc and become a true disruptor along Seattle's interior in his second season." Murphy flashed pass-rushing upside in spurts as a rookie. A healthy, more mature sophomore version should be an effective defender in 2025. Mike Macdonald and his defensive staff will attempt to continue developing Murphy this season.
