BREAKING NEWS RAF airlifts 63 British nationals out of Israel to Cyprus amid growing conflict with Iran

Sixty three Britons were airlifted out of Israel today amid a growing threat of war in the Middle East. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said an RAF flight was en route to Cyprus and more would follow in the coming days. He also told the Commons a British national had been injured by Iranian rockets fired on Israel over the last week. The Government used an RAF A-400M aircraft for the flight from Tel Aviv to Cyprus – with passengers due to transfer on to a civilian charter aircraft for the onwards journey to the UK this afternoon. British nationals still in Israel are being urged to register their presence with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Commercial flights are continuing to operate from Egypt and Jordan, and international land border crossings to these countries remain open. Mr Lammy said: 'Further flights will follow in the coming days, security allowing. We will prioritise those with greatest need, and contact those allocated a seat directly.' Foreign Secretary David Lammy told the Commons a British national had been injured by Iranian rockets fired on Israel over the last week. Earlier, Mr Lammy had urged Iran to take a diplomatic 'off-ramp' and engage in talks, as he cautioned Tehran against blockading the Strait of Hormuz or attacking US bases in the Middle East in revenge for Saturday night's missile attack. Questions are being asked about whether the shipping channel or oil exports through it could be blocked amid the tensions.

Briton injured in Iran missile attacks as first evacuation flight from Israel takes off

A British national has been injured in Israel during missile attacks by Iran, the foreign secretary has said, telling the Commons that 63 others have been evacuated from Israel to Cyprus by the RAF. It comes after the US attacked three nuclear sites in Iran overnight and Tehran then launched a ballistic missile barrage against Israel. In a statement to the Commons, the foreign secretary said: 'This is a perilous moment in the Middle East, waves of strikes between Israel and Iran have now lasted for 10 days, continuing overnight. 'I know the whole House will have in their thoughts the many civilians impacted by the fighting. I can confirm today, this includes one British national, injured in Israel. We've reached out to offer consular support.' It is understood that around 4,000 British nationals have registered their presence in Israel with the Foreign Office, while around 1,000 have requested a seat on a flight. Further evacuation flights will be provided by the foreign office, Mr Lammy confirmed on Monday. 'Today's flight will bring British nationals and their dependents safely back to the UK. While the situation in the Middle East remains volatile, we are working around the clock to secure more flights and bring more people home', the foreign secretary said. The government used an RAF A-400M aircraft for the flight from Tel Aviv to Cyprus – with passengers due to transfer on to a civilian charter aircraft for the onward journey to the UK this afternoon. The FCDO last week said those with 'greatest need' would be prioritised for flights, and British nationals plus their non-British immediate family members travelling with them are eligible. All passengers must hold a valid travel document, and those non-British immediate family members will require valid visas/permission to enter or remain that was granted for more than six months, the FCDO said. Ministers have warned British nationals not to make their way to the airport unless they are contacted, adding that the situation 'remains volatile'. The government's ability to run flights out of Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories 'could change at short notice', the FCDO warned.

Hundreds flee as wildfires rage across Greek holiday island

Wildfires have broken out on the Greek holiday island of Chios, with the authorities declaring a state of emergency and ordering residents to evacuate. Nearly 200 firefighters are trying to control the blazes, which are being whipped up by strong winds, and another 170 are being sent as reinforcements. A dozen helicopters and four planes capable of dumping water have been deployed to the area. Locals and tourists on the island in the northern Aegean have received mobile phone alerts ordering them to evacuate. Ioannis Kefalogiannis, the civil protection minister, said the decision to impose a state of emergency was made so that the authorities 'can immediately take the necessary measures'. Ms Kefalogiannis said the powerful winds, estimated at force six on the Beaufort scale, were making the situation 'very difficult'. 'If the wind dies down a bit, we might be able to get this fire under control. But the wind really hasn't dropped,' she said. The evacuation orders affect 16 villages and suburbs on the outskirts of Chios town, the main settlement. 'The situation remains critical as firefighting forces are still dealing with many active fronts, several of which are near hamlets,' said a Greek government spokesman. Firefighting teams are trying to prevent the blazes from spreading to rural areas known for producing mastiha, a natural resin harvested from mastic trees. On Sunday, about a dozen areas and hundreds of asylum seekers at a reception centre were forced to evacuate as the fires spread. Although wildfires are common in Greece during the summer, experts say global warming is producing bigger and more frequent conflagrations. In 2023, devastating forest fires broke out on the island of Rhodes, forcing 19,000 people to flee the island. Greece has hired a record 18,000 firefighters this year amid concerns that it faces a challenging fire season. A heatwave is predicted in the next few days, with temperatures of more than 40C (104F) expected, including in the capital Athens.
