Bradford gains special Cultural City of Sanctuary designation

Yahoo04-04-2025

Bradford has been named the first-ever Cultural City of Sanctuary.
The special title, delivered by the Bradford Culture Company, is intended to reflect the role that people seeking sanctuary - refugees and asylum seekers, as well as people seeking other forms of protection - play in Bradford's culture.
The accolade was announced at an event with Bradford Friendship Choir, many of whose singers are refugees and sanctuary seekers from countries in the Middle East, Africa, and elsewhere.
The choir was a key part of the Bradford 2025 opening event, RISE, in January.
Bradford 2025 has also announced a formal partnership with Stand & Be Counted, billed as the UK's first Theatre Company of Sanctuary.
Planned initiatives include creation of routes into volunteering; distribution of tickets; weekly creative sessions for people seeking sanctuary; developing "creative engagement activity to work alongside Basel Zaraa's artwork inspired by The Moomins and the Great Flood"; and working with Displace Yourself Theatre on providing trauma-informed practice training for team members.
Rhiannon Hannon, director of creative engagement at Bradford 2025, said: "Our ambition for the City of Culture is not just to celebrate Bradford's creativity but also to ensure that people seeking sanctuary have equal access to the programme's opportunities, and this designation highlights that.
"Furthermore, we are pleased to partner with Stand & Be Counted, who bring expertise in working with people seeking sanctuary and can guide us in making sure the year's programme and activities are a truly inclusive celebration of our district."
Rosie MacPherson, artistic director and joint CEO of Stand & Be Counted, added: "We're so thrilled that Bradford will be the first Cultural City of Sanctuary.
"It's an important moment to stand with people seeking sanctuary, and it's a great symbol of positivity and welcome.
"Stand & Be Counted have been working in Bradford for many years, and we know this milestone and work across lots of incredible organisations will have a huge impact on people seeking sanctuary being seen, supported, and involved in all of the incredible productions and programmes in Bradford across 2025 and beyond."
With the announcement of Bradford's status as Cultural City of Sanctuary, Bradford 2025 has released a film which contains testimonials from groups including Bradford Friendship Choir, HALE (Health Action Local Engagement), and The Peace Museum; it is the first of a planned series of films spotlighting distinct aspects of Bradford culture and identity, to be released throughout the year.

Christian rock band respond to former member's drug abuse, sexual assault allegations

Christian rock band respond to former member's drug abuse, sexual assault allegations Nashville-based Christian rockers Newsboys are responding to troubling news regarding their 59-year-old former lead singer, Michael Tait. In a post on the group's official Instagram account, the Australian-founded band responded to allegations of drug abuse and inappropriate sexual conduct against Tait while also distancing him from the band. "Last night, our hearts were shattered when we read the news alleging drug abuse and inappropriate sexual actions by our former lead singer, Michael Tait. While Michael has not addressed these allegations, we are devastated even by the implications," the statement read. "First and foremost, our hearts are with the victims who have bravely shared their stories. If you are a victim, we urge you to come forward. We absolutely do not condone any form of sexual assault." The quartet noted that as husbands who are fathers of 14 children in total, they were "horrified, heartbroken, and angry at this report and in many ways, we feel as if we and our families have been deceived for the last fifteen years." Tait told the band he had 'been living a double-life' In January 2025, Tait, who was the lead vocalist of the group for 15 years in their four decades of existence, offered the following in a statement: "Fifteen years ago, my life was forever changed when I received the invite to step into the role of lead singer for Newsboys. The years since have been some of the most fulfilling, faith-filled, and rewarding years of my life." "I have been on an amazing journey all over the globe, performing and ministering to people of all ages, races, and backgrounds." "The decision does not come lightly and has been a shock to even myself, but admist prayer and fasting, I have clarity that this is the right decision," the statement continued. In their June 5 statement, Tait's former bandmates, Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein, Jody Davis and Adam Agee, noted that when he left the band, he "confessed" to them and their management that he "had been living a double-life." Through a nearly three-year-long investigation by The Roys Report, it was discovered that for two decades, Tait befriended three young men on Christian music tours in 2004, 2010, and 2014. The trio were all 22 at the time of their first interaction. Allegations of Tait, then two decades older than his accusers, engaging in acts of sexual assault and grooming highlight the lengthy investigation. Latest on Michael Tait As of June 5, Tait has not officially responded to the allegations on his social media accounts or the statement from his former bandmates. As well, there have been no further comments from the group. Upon their 2021 release of "Stand," their 20th studio album, the band spoke with The Nashville Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network. It's noted that when Grammy-winner Tait, formerly of DC Talk, replaced Peter Furler as the group's new lead vocalist in 2009, the band no longer had any original members in its ranks.

Indigenous opera singer Emma Pennell wins $25K emerging artist award

Indigenous soprano Emma Pennell has won a $25,000 emerging artist award. The 27-year-old opera singer will receive the RBC Emerging Artist Award during weekend celebrations for the 2025 Governor General's Performing Arts Awards. Pennell was chosen by a committee of artistic leaders at the National Arts Centre. Daphne Burt, senior manager of artistic planning for the NAC Orchestra, nominated Pennell, describing them as a star on the rise. Pennell says the award is a life-changing amount that would help cover the expensive costs of opera auditions, which often involve travel and stage attire. Pennell will receive the award at a special event on June 14th, part of the weekend of celebrations for the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards. 'Not many people who come from places that I come from have these opportunities and so I owe it to all the Indigenous people that I've met along the way,' said Pennell, who has Ktaqmkuk Mi'kmaq roots and is from the village of South River in rural Northern Ontario. 'Our voices, our art, our performances and our bodies belong on these stages just like everybody else. I actually have no idea how the National Arts Centre found me, but they did! It's just amazing.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 4, 2025.

Elayna Black (Cora Jade) Reveals She Nearly Died Due To An Ectopic Pregnancy

Former WWE NXT star Elayna Black, known as Cora Jade, nearly lost her life in 2023 due to an ectopic pregnancy. Jade was off WWE NXT TV between January and April 2023. In an interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, she revealed that her absence resulted from a serious medical emergency. 'In January of 2023 it was like the very late January, I was supposed to wrestle Lyra Valkyria on TV on Tuesday, and long story short. I'll spare you the details long story short, I ended up in emergency surgery in the hospital the night before. Literally almost dying and bleeding out. Because I had had an ectopic pregnancy that had failed and it exploded and, like, made me internally bleed.' Black says she was rushed into emergency surgery so she didn't bleed out. She noted that she was worried about making it to her match the next day. In hindsight, she is thankful she went to the hospital. After an 11-hour wait, doctors realized she needed immediate surgery. 'So what had happened was, I had, I don't know if you're familiar with the IUD birth control. It's inserted in you, it's like a 99.9% success rate. But they warn you beforehand, 'cause it's like a 5-year thing, so you're, like, protected for 5 years. But they warn you of ectopic pregnancies beforehand. Which, if you're not, or anyone else isn't familiar, it's where, like, the egg is implanted outside of the uterus, in the fallopian tube and that causes the fallopian tube to explode.' 'Obviously, you internally bleed, and it's very, extremely life-threatening obviously to the baby or whatever it was, but to the woman. So I was always scared of that in general, 'cause I have health anxiety anyway. So I was always worried about that so I kind of again, my intuition, I was like, this I know what's happening. Like, I got to go.' 'So we did that, had the emergency surgery. They ended up having to remove my left fallopian tube because it was that bad. And then I was just, I was just bummed about missing Stand & Deliver. Like, I was like, I can't miss like, I cannot miss Stand & Deliver. But then, like, after that, I felt like I guess nothing has ever happened like that to me before. I never realized, like, the effects of it and stuff like that. So, like, after I came back, like, those few months, I was just the most mentally depressed I have ever been in my entire life.'
