Oakland school mourns student shot and killed Monday
(KRON) — A Catholic high school in the East Bay is mourning the loss of one of its students after they were killed in Oakland on Monday. According to police, the student died at the hospital after being shot on 100th Avenue.
'This loss has shocked and harmed the entire community,' a statement from Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School released Tuesday said.
The Oakland Police Department said they responded at 4:15 p.m. to the 1400 block of 100th Avenue on multiple reports of a shooting. Arriving officers located the student suffering from a gunshot wound or wounds.
The identity of the Oakland student was not released as of early Wednesday.

'First and foremost, we want to respect and hold the student's family's privacy, space, and grief at this moment,' the Oakland high school wrote on its website. 'No parent should have to deal with such a devastating tragedy. We are here to support them on their terms and their timeline.'
Cristo Rey De La Salle announced it was offering one-on-one counseling, spiritual guidance and prayer space, grief workshops and activities and healing circles led by faculty and staff.
'Our mission at Cristo Rey De La Salle is to accompany our students,' the school said. 'We are walking with them to support as they navigate grief, shock, and all the feelings that accompany a tragedy like this.'
The Oakland PD Homicide Division is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No additional information on the killing was immediately released.

Klobuchar dined with Minnesota lawmaker just hours before she was killed
On Friday night, Sen. Amy Klobuchar was having dinner in her home state at an event with Melissa Hortman, the former speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives who served as a lawmaker for almost 20 years. Hours later, she was mourning the loss of a friend whom the Democratic senator had known for decades. Minnesota Gov. 'That ability to manage with two kids led her to do a really good job managing legislators,' Klobuchar said. When Hortman was first elected in 2004 to Minnesota's House of Representatives, Klobuchar was five years into her role as County Attorney of Hennepin County — both on the outskirts of Minneapolis. 'She was pretty no nonsense,' the senator said. 'But in a kind way, with a lot of humor.' Klobuchar mentioned one detail that particularly stood out to her: On her third day as speaker, Hortman turned off the mute button her predecessor used to prevent legislators from speaking — she didn't need it. 'She's like 'I don't need that. I can use the gavel,'' Klobuchar said. 'She was just such a skilled legislator at bringing people together.' Hortman's killing only adds on to the growing amount of political violence and harsh rhetoric encapsulating American politics. San Jose fraud prevention expert charged with healthcare fraud
(KRON) — A woman who worked as a security manager at Nvidia and regularly spoke as an expert on fraud prevention was charged with submitting 167 fraudulent healthcare claims against the Santa Clara-based tech company, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office announced Friday. Faranak Firozan, 47, is accused of submitting the fraudulent claims between November 2020 and January 2024 to Nvidia's self-insured health plan, according to prosecutors. The DA's office said that many of the claims were either entirely made up or that bills were altered by changing service dates. 'Providers verified that services listed in her claims were either not performed at all or were duplicated claims,' the DA's office wrote. The scheme began to unravel in August 2024, according to prosecutors, after the California Department of Insurance received a suspected fraudulent claim referral from Cigna, which administered Nvidia's health plan. 'In 2020, she provided training on cyber laundering for the Information Systems Security Association Silicon Valley Chapter.' Firozan was charged with altering medical records with fraudulent intent and preparing false statements in connection with insurance claims. She also faces an added aggravated white-collar crime enhancement. Firozan is scheduled to be arraigned on July 15. Oakland PD asks for help solving fatal shooting cold case
(KRON) – The Oakland Police Department is asking for public assistance in solving the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Bert Brigham III. Brigham's death occurred almost four years ago on July 18, 2021, in the 1900 block of Foothill Boulevard. Oakland business looted following anti-ICE protest OPD has released images of four male suspects in their 20s and vehicles that may be connected to the case (pictured below). Per OPD, a white Kia Optima, a blue Toyota Camry, and a dark Honda Accord were the cars associated with the suspects.
