Teen arrested in killing of 15-year-old Oakland boy

(KRON) — An arrest has been made days after 15-year-old Derbing Alvarado was gunned down while walking with friends in Oakland on Monday afternoon, the Oakland Police Department announced Friday. Authorities confirmed that a 16-year-old was taken into custody in connection to the killing on Thursday. The teen's identity was not released. Alvarado was shot around 4:15 p.m. on the 1400 block of 100th Avenue while on his way to soccer practice with two of his friends, according to Oakland City Councilmember Ken Houston. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The boy was set to turn 16 next month. Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School, a college prep school that Alvarado attended as a student, said Tuesday, 'This loss has shocked and harmed the entire community.' The case is being presented to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for charging, Oakland PD said. Oakland school mourns student shot and killed Monday

(KRON) — A Catholic high school in the East Bay is mourning the loss of one of its students after they were killed in Oakland on Monday. According to police, the student died at the hospital after being shot on 100th Avenue. 'This loss has shocked and harmed the entire community,' a statement from Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School released Tuesday said. The Oakland Police Department said they responded at 4:15 p.m. to the 1400 block of 100th Avenue on multiple reports of a shooting. Arriving officers located the student suffering from a gunshot wound or wounds. The identity of the Oakland student was not released as of early Wednesday. Mother in fatal Napa DUI crash charged with vehicular manslaughter 'First and foremost, we want to respect and hold the student's family's privacy, space, and grief at this moment,' the Oakland high school wrote on its website. 'No parent should have to deal with such a devastating tragedy. We are here to support them on their terms and their timeline.' Cristo Rey De La Salle announced it was offering one-on-one counseling, spiritual guidance and prayer space, grief workshops and activities and healing circles led by faculty and staff. 'Our mission at Cristo Rey De La Salle is to accompany our students,' the school said. 'We are walking with them to support as they navigate grief, shock, and all the feelings that accompany a tragedy like this.'
