Pedro's last-minute goal joins the Brighton history books

Pedro's last-minute goal joins the Brighton history books

BBC News11-03-2025

In every season where Brighton achieve something special, there tends to be an unforgettable last-minute goal. The 2010-11 League One title winning campaign had Liam Bridcutt crashing home a volley against Carlisle United to the now legendary "it's the stuff of dreams - the stuff of champions" commentary of Johnny Cantor on BBC Radio Sussex.Glenn Murray delivered an early Christmas present in 2016, scoring a last-gasp winner at Birmingham City in the Championship promotion year. Two seasons ago and a last gasp Alexis Mac Allister penalty saw off Manchester United at Amex Stadium. That day, the roar that greeted the goal was so loud it could be heard the other side of Brighton as the Albion moved within touching distance of European qualification for the first time ever.Saturday saw the 2024-25 version of Bridcutt, Murray and Mac Allister. With virtually the last kick of the game, Joao Pedro beat Bernd Leno from the spot. Not only did it end a winless run against Fulham stretching back eight years but it moved Brighton to within a point of the Champions League places.Victory away at Manchester City this weekend would take the Albion above the four-in-a-row champions going into the international break. It was surreal to hear pundits on BBC Match of the Day openly discussing Brighton's top four chance - especially as just five weeks earlier, they were picking over the bones of a humiliating 7-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, external. The reaction to that sorry afternoon by the banks of the River Trent has been phenomenal. If it somehow ends up carrying the Albion into the Champions League, Brighton's biggest league defeat in 57 years will end up being seen as the catalyst for arguably the biggest achievement in the club's history.Find more from Scott McCarthy at We Are Brighton, external

Mauricio Pochettino rules himself out of contention for Tottenham job

Spurs are seeking a new head coach having sacked Postecoglou just 16 days after leading the club to Europa League glory, their first trophy in 17 years. United States boss Pochettino ended a five-year stay at Tottenham in November 2019, having helped Spurs reach the final of the Champions League that year. Pochettino took Tottenham to a Champions League final (Adam Davy/PA) The Argentinian signed a two-year contract to become US head coach last September and is expected to lead the team into next year's home World Cup. Speaking after his side's 2-1 friendly defeat to Turkey in Connecticut, Pochettino told reporters: 'After I left in 2019, every time that I was free, and the place of the position of the manager or head coach in Tottenham Hotspur, my name is appearing on the list. 'If you have seen the rumours, I think there are 100 coaches in the list. I think, don't be worried about that. Postecoglou was sacked 16 days after guiding the club to European success (Andrew Milligan/PA) 'If something happened, for sure you will see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing, because I think today, it's not real. It's not realistic. 'Look at where I am, where we are. And the thing is, the answer is so clear, no? But we're talking about it because it's my club, like Newells or Espanyol.' Meanwhile Tottenham have exercised the 12-month option in Ben Davies' deal to keep him at the club for another season. Davies is Spurs' longest serving player after he joined in the summer of 2015 – two months before the arrival of Son Heung-min. Wales defender Davies has made 358 appearances for Tottenham and is set to work under his sixth permanent head coach at the club during the 2025-26 campaign after Postecoglou's dismissal on Friday. Brentford boss Thomas Frank has been installed as the bookmakers' favourite for the vacancy, but as of Saturday, Tottenham were yet to make an official approach for the Danish coach, the PA news agency understands.

Jack Grealish may be handed perfect transfer after brutal axe by Man City

Jack Grealish is looking for a way out of Manchester City and Newcastle United could come in with a loan offer as they prepare for a return to the Champions League Newcastle are ready to offer Jack Grealish a way out of Manchester City as they weigh up a loan move for the out-of-favour playmaker. The £100million man has fallen well down the pecking order at the Etihad and is after a way out. A switch to St James' Park could allow him to rediscover his best form with the Magpies open to signing him for the season. Grealish will miss out on the City squad that heads to the Club World Cup, further underlining his decline. ‌ The problem for him and the Premier League giants is his mammoth £300,000-a-week salary. Few suitors will take on the entirety of his wages and City may have to foot some of the bill to get him out of Manchester, even if only temporarily. ‌ Newcastle are back in the Champions League next season and Eddie Howe has continued to get the most out of the players he's worked with. Joelinton and Jacob Murphy are examples of those who have thrived and Grealish will hope for a similar upturn in form. The interest from the Magpies will only ramp up if they begin receiving offers for Anthony Gordon, reports The Sun. The winger has become a leading light in the north east, but has been the subject of transfer interest. Newcastle signed Gordon for £40m from Everton three seasons ago and he's been a huge hit. Liverpool were heavily linked last summer and the player was interested in the move, but ultimately stayed put. Howe would be loathe to lose his star man. Grealish has previously shown he can be hugely effective and as Newcastle balance multiple competitions, his nous could be very useful. His City's treble-winning season the ex-Villa man was an influential figure as he played out wide - and prior to that was a key man at Villa Park. Pep Guardiola has admitted that Grealish needs regular minutes despite overlooking him on numerous occasions. He said: 'Of course, Jack has to play. He's an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn't happen this season and last season either. He needs to do it, with us or another place. ‌ 'It's a question for Jack, his agent and the club. If he stays it will be fine and he will fight like he fought from day one to make a contribution, but not today.' Guardiola also added: 'It's nothing personal with Jack. I'm the person who fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Rangers news bulletin as battle intensifies for transfer target and Barry Ferguson told he could have Ibrox job for life

It is your latest news on the Light Blues all in one place in our Sunday AM round-up Rangers target Josh Mulligan is being eyed by three clubs down south - as former boss Barry Ferguson 's brother revealed he would be open to a return to management Dundee star Mulligan is out of contract this summer and is officially a free agent. And that has alerted numerous sides who are interested in the midfielder who played 41 times for the Dees last term. ‌ Mulligan had held talks with Rangers back in January as they considered a pre-contract deal for the player, similar to the one they struck with his team-mate Lyall Cameron. ‌ The Ibrox outfit ultimately opted to put their transfer business on hold as they finalised the arrival of Kevin Thelwell and Dan Purdy and that opened the door to English clubs to make their interest known. It is understood that next season's League One sides Plymouth Argyle and Cardiff City are both keen on Mulligan. Championship side Oxford United also hold an interest in the versatile star who will have his pick of the bunch after a strong campaign in the Premiership. Meanwhile, Derek Ferguson has revealed brother Barry could be back in the dugout in the future - and reckons his sibling could step into the dugout again if it doesn't work out for new boss Russell Martin. Ferguson left his role as Rangers interim boss following the conclusion of the Premiership season with Martin the new man in charge. Speaking to Ibrox News, Derek said: 'It's always hard to say, but he really enjoyed being the figurehead. He'll go back to his ambassadorial role for now, and if things don't go well with this next appointment, of course he could fill in as caretaker manager again. It could well be a job for life. ‌ 'Barry was obviously really disappointed not to have got the manager's job full-time. He was initially brought in with the intention to help out. 'But once you get your feet under the table, get your feet on the grass, it whets the appetite. Maybe now he has a different outlook if something else comes up. ‌ 'There are a number of jobs out there in Scotland and you never say never. He put together a good coaching team and the likes of Neil McCann and Billy Dodds will look to get back into the coaching side of things. 'Barry handled the job really well while he was there, and it looked like it was working. "You're left to wonder what could have been in the long term, but it wasn't to be. You may well see Barry and the other boys in another job in the future.' Elsewhere, Flynn Downes is reportedly wanted in Govan this summer. But Southampton would demand a huge fee of at least £10m to sell - and that could price the LIght Blues out of a swoop, according to The Sun. Downes cost £15millon on their return to the EPL - but the Saints are back in the second tier after finishing bottom in ultimately a campaign to forget.
