BMW Group's First Quarter Earnings Show EV Sales Are Booming

Yahoo05-04-2025

BMW earnings often bring mixed results, but not this year. In the first three months of 2025, BMW reports that sales of electric vehicles are up 26.4 percent, and overall sales are up 3.7 percent. MINI is also up 9.5 percent.
These numbers are for Q1 2025, and the percentage gains are calculated by comparing sales to the first quarter of 2024. The numbers are striking for a few reasons, not least that the first quarter is often a slow time for the auto industry and the economy in general. As people recover from holiday shopping, large purchases often take a backseat. Maybe people didn't get the BMW i4 M50 they expected to see under the tree last Christmas.
Buoyed by i4 sales, BMW sold 13,538 electrified cars in Q1 2025 compared to 9,713 sold in the first quarter of last year. The i5, a relatively recent addition to BMW's stable of EVs, sold 1,899 units this year. The i4, a punchy little four-door sedan best experienced in an M variant, sold 7,125 cars, leading all EV sales for BMW by a wide margin. The iX, BMW's first foray into electrified SUVs, sold 3,626 units, while the luxurious and stately i7 found 888 new owners.
Though BMW sold more EVs this year, not all vehicles sold better. i5 sales dipped 15.2 percent (BMW sold 239 i5s in Q1 2024) and the i7 fell 10.4 percent (991 sold in Q1 2024). For the i7, this isn't alarming, as the current version is a bit long in the tooth, and the market for a six-figure electrified sedan is small anyway. The fact that i5 sales are down may hint at waning interest, though.
The iX sold 23.1 percent better in 2025, and the i4 is selling 57 percent better this year. The 4 Series has always been a sleeper hit for BMW, and the i4 suggests buyers are interested in smaller, sportier EVs. Last year, the i4 accounted for half of all 4 Series sales in the US.
MINI's big success in 2025 is driven by bigger vehicles. BMW didn't break down MINI sales figures by model, but it did say that the brand sold 6,976 vehicles so far this year compared to 6,369 in the first quarter of 2024, which equates to a 9.5 percent uptick.
The new MINI Countryman, a small SUV that's massive by MINI standards, has reached dealerships and is contributing to sales. It's the largest MINI to date and undoubtedly garners attention from small SUV buyers who want something fun without sacrificing quality. The Cooper, a return to MINI's heart and soul of small, sporty two-door cars, is also available in dealerships.
The elephant in the room is that BMW has yet to electrify its core SUVs in the United States. When—not if—that happens, expect sales of BMW EVs to skyrocket. If BMW times vehicle launches properly and can find enough lithium to electrify its cars en masse, we could be reporting on 100 percent or more growth in BMW EV sales in 2026 when its next-gen battery and Neue Klasse vehicle platforms are ready to roll (pun intended).

Figure AI CEO skips live demo, sidesteps BMW deal questions onstage at tech conference

Brett Adcock, co-founder and CEO of the humanoid robotics startup Figure AI, made a rare public appearance at the Bloomberg Tech conference on Thursday. Figure has recently been the subject of a couple news articles that questioned its progress with marquee customer BMW. Figure objected so strenuously to at least one of these reports that Adcock publicly threatened to sue the publication. When asked about the skepticism surrounding the BMW relationship and whether it is a pilot or has commercial value to the company, Adcock replied with an explanation of the technical benefit of having robots on a factory floor but didn't provide specifics about the contractual relationship with BMW. "We get a lot of value, and it's really important that we need to figure out how to run robots every day. We get to see how well they perform. We get to track all the metrics," he said. Two months ago, Figure also published a YouTube video showing a couple of its robots working in a BMW factory. Adcock did, however, say that Figure AI has signed a contract with a second, unnamed customer for initial deployment, a customer that Bloomberg has reported to be UPS. Figure AI has drawn attention for making claims that its AI-powered robots possess human-like fine motor skills and can manipulate objects with precision. Despite releasing numerous videos of its robots at work, the company hasn't done a live demonstration of the humanoids. The interviewer, Bloomberg's Ed Ludlow, pointed out that while two other robotics companies, Agility Robotics and Boston Dynamics, showcased their robots at the conference, Figure AI did not. 'It kind of goes back to our whole philosophy around we don't go to a lot of events," said Adcock. "I think it's a giant waste of time. To be frank, I have to bring a team here to bring robots here. They could be at the office,' he said, adding that the company is showcasing the robots in videos. Adcock confirmed that Figure AI is expecting to manufacture and deploy roughly 100,000 units within four years. The skepticism about Figure's commercial relationship comes amid the company's attempts to raise a $1.5 billion round at a $39.5 billion valuation, sources told Bloomberg, a fifteenfold increase from the $2.6 billion valuation it achieved in February 2024. TechCrunch reported in April that Figure AI has been issuing cease-and-desist letters to secondary market brokers, demanding they stop marketing its shares because they are not authorized to do so. I-5 crash near Lathrop leaves box truck cab hanging over San Joaquin River

A box truck driver found themselves precariously hanging above the San Joaquin River after a crash along Interstate 5 early Friday morning. California Highway Patrol says the crash happened a little after 5 a.m., south of Lathrop. Exactly what led up to the truck crashing is unclear, but the tractor ended up crashing through the guardrail of the freeway – leaving the cab hanging over the San Joaquin River. Scene of the crash. CHP Stockton First responders were able to quickly stabilize the vehicle so that they could start a vertical rescue. Using a ladder truck, Lathrop-Manteca Fire District says a firefighter was lowered onto the cab. A harness was then placed on the driver and they were taken back to solid ground. The rescue operation took less than 30 minutes. The driver was not hurt in the crash, firefighters say. Some diesel fuel leaked onto the river below, prompting an environment clean-up crew to be called to the scene to contain it. Several lanes of southbound I-5 were impacted through the morning. The lanes weren't cleared until a little before noon.
