Spirit Airlines adds 3 service routes from Savannah
Starting in August, Spirit will fly nonstop from the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport.
In October, flights from Savannah to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Nashville International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport will take off as well.

According to Spirit, the new service will give travelers 'high-value travel options' while making it easier to experience Savannah's world-class hospitality.
'We look forward to welcoming our Savannah Guests onboard soon and offering them new, elevated travel options with unmatched value to visit exciting destinations across the East Coast and Midwest,' John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines, said in a statement. 'Savannah is an incredible destination, and we know our Guests will love exploring this coastal gem while immersing themselves in the city's historic charm and vibrant art scene.'

The new routes make Savannah the second market on Spirit's Georgia route map, the company said, with the first being the launch of their airline serve from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in 2006.
When the new routes start, Spirit will use what they're calling a special one-way introductory fee.
Here are the costs for the introductory one-way fares, and how often they'll go per week, when the new routes launch.
Flights from Savannah to Newark daily starting Aug. 14 at $60
Flights from Savannah to Fort Lauderdale four times per week starting Oct. 9 at $79
Flights from Savannah to Nashville three times per week starting Oct. 9 at $59
Flights from Savannah to Detroit twice per week starting Oct. 10 at $79
'We have been working hard to get Spirit to add SAV to their route structure,' Greg Kelly, Executive Director of the Savannah Airport Commission, said in a statement. 'We believe Spirit is a great fit for our market, and the cities they are adding will be a strong addition for our community and region. We appreciate Spirit for adding us to their system, and we will work hard to ensure their success and growth here in SAV.'

Spirit Airlines announced Monday it will furlough 270 pilots and demote 140 captains to first officers as part of a restructuring effort aimed at restoring profitability. The company's latest contraction could have ripple effects in the Bay Area, where Spirit operates several key routes out of Oakland and San Jose airports. At Oakland International Airport, the airline flies to six domestic destinations, including Las Vegas, Newark and Orange County. In San Jose, Spirit has rapidly expanded its presence, now offering 13 daily departures — including twice-daily nonstop service to Hollywood Burbank Airport. The airline did not respond to questions about whether specific routes would be affected. 'Spirit continues to shrink, and with it, the value of pilot seniority and Spirit careers continues to erode,' said Captain Ryan Muller, chairman of the Spirit unit of the Air Line Pilots Association, in a statement. Meanwhile, the airline is working to shed its no-frills image, adding extra legroom seats and launching a Spirit-branded debit card as part of a broader bid to rebrand itself as a 'premium' low-cost carrier. The company furloughed more than 500 pilots last year and is currently seeking to offload over 20 Airbus A320 aircraft.

Spirit Airlines is furloughing around 270 pilots and demoting another 140 later this year as the budget carrier looks to slim down the workforce and adjust to a slower schedule. 'We are taking necessary steps to ensure we operate as efficiently as possible as part of our efforts to return to profitability. Among these steps, we have made the difficult decision to furlough approximately 270 Pilots, effective Nov. 1, 2025, to better align staffing with our flight schedule,' the airline said in an emailed statement to The Hill on Tuesday. The demotion of approximately 140 captains will take place on Oct. 1. They will downgraded to first officer, according to the Air Line Pilots Association, the largest pilot union in the world, CNBC reported. 'We recognize the weight of this decision and are committed to treating all affected Team Members with compassion and respect during this process,' the airline added. The Florida-based carrier had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November, after failed attempts at merging with other airlines and financial losses. Spirit emerged from bankruptcy in March. Ahead of filing for bankruptcy, Spirit furloughed around 200 pilots in September. 'We know how hard this news hits, and there's no dressing that up. Spirit continues to shrink, and with it, the value of pilot seniority and Spirit careers continues to erode,' Ryan Muller, a captain and the chairman of Spirit's Air Line Pilots Association, said, according to CNBC.

JetBlue, United partnership gets go-ahead from U.S. Transportation Department
(Reuters) -JetBlue and United Airlines have cleared a review of their planned Blue Sky partnership by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) allowing them to proceed with the implementation, the companies said on Tuesday. The two companies in May unveiled a partnership that would allow travelers to book flights on both carriers' websites, while interchangeably earning and using points in their frequent flyer programs. Spirit Airlines in June had urged the U.S. transportation body to reject the collaboration between the two carriers, saying it was anticompetitive and would prompt other large carriers to pursue similar deals.
