Argentina and Brazil search for Messi and Neymar replacements ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers
Leader Argentina has 25 points after 12 matches and could secure its place in the next World Cup within days, helped by a win at second-placed Uruguay on Friday.
On Thursday, fifth placed Brazil faces Colombia, who is one position ahead in the standings. Next Tuesday, the two South American powerhouses will clash in Buenos Aires. Argentina won their previous encounter at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro 1-0.
Also this week, Paraguay will host Chile, Peru will take on Bolivia, and Ecuador plays host for Venezuela. The top six teams in South American World Cup qualifying will secure direct berths to the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The 7th-placed team among the 10 of the region will still have a chance to qualify in an international playoff.
Brazil vs. Colombia
Brazil could end this month securing its spot in the next World Cup or lagging in the 7th place. And that means pressure on coach Júnior, who could still lose his job before the tournament.
Neymar's absence led Júnior to try out Savinho up front alongside Rodrygo and Vinicius Júnior, with Raphinha behind them. Brazil's coach has hinted that would be the most likely lineup against Colombia on Thursday at the Mané Garrincha stadium in Brasilia.
If Savinho doesn't work, Júnior could move Raphinha up front or try out teenager Estêvão, one of Brazil's biggest prospects.
Brazil drew against Venezuela and Uruguay in its two latest World Cup qualifying matches, with coach Júnior arguing he was 'starting a recovery process' by testing several players in different positions.
'We hope we will continue to develop, with the team getting more ready,' he said in early March after announcing his squad for the two upcoming clashes. 'We need special care at this moment against two excellent rivals, we will surely have two great matches.'
Uruguay vs. Argentina
With Messi out due to a muscle injury, Scaloni could field a powerful duo up front in Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez if he is confident in winning at the Centenario Stadium, Montevideo. A win would make Argentina the first South American team to qualify for the World Cup. So far, Álvarez has scored 23 goals for Atletico Madrid this season, while Martínez has 11 for Inter Milan in Serie A.
But if Scaloni wants a more careful approach, midfielder Thiago Almada could be placed in Messi's role and force either Álvarez or Martínez out of the team. Earlier on Wednesday, local media said the Inter Milan striker could be rested on Friday as he is fatigued.
Messi injured his left thigh adductor muscle in Inter Miami 2-1 victory over Atlanta United on Sunday in the MLS.
Argentine players might want to be cautious in Montevideo to avoid risking suspension for the match against Brazil. Defender Nicolás Otamendi, midfielders Leandro Paredes, Enzo Fernández, Rodrigo de Paul, and Alexis Mac Allister, and striker Martínez could miss the clash if they get a yellow against Uruguay.
After facing Uruguay and before hosting Brazil, Argentina will play a friendly on Saturday against a local U-20 team at Huracán Stadium in Buenos Aires in a fundraiser for the reconstruction of a hospital damaged by a storm that killed 16 people in the region of Bahía Blanca two weeks ago.
'We needed to do something within the international window,' Scaloni said.

The Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. hits 100th homer, joining some select company in MLB history
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. knew the ball was gone the moment it left his bat. Only later did the young Kansas City Royals star realize what kind of company it allowed him to join. The two-run shot in the eighth inning against Texas on Tuesday night merely padded the lead for Kansas City, which went on to a 5-2 victory. It was the fifth straight win for the Royals, who closed to within 2 1/2 games of an AL wild-card berth. But it also was the 100th career homer for Witt, making him the youngest in franchise history to reach that mark. He made it at the age of 26 years, 66 days, or more than a year earlier than Carlos Beltran when he accomplished it during the 2003 season. 'I want him up there every inning,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "I mean, you look at the lineup and you're trying to figure out, 'How many times can we get to the plate? How many guys can we keep on base for him when he does come to the plate?' 'I mean, that's an immense amount of pressure on a younger player to understand that's how everybody feels about him," Quatraro said. "But he has the physical ability, the makeup and the mental capacity to handle it.' The latest no-doubt shot, which came off Texas reliever Cole Winn and landed an estimated 449 feet to dead center field, made Witt only the fourth player with at least 100 homers and 100 stolen bases through his first four big league seasons. The others are Julio Rodríguez, Darryl Strawberry and Bobby Bonds — some pretty select company. Witt also become one of six shortstops in the last 95 years to hit at least 100 homers through his age-25 seasons. That list of luminaries includes Alex Rodriguez, Cal Ripken Jr., Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa and Hanley Ramirez; of those players, only Rodriguez and Ramirez also had 100 steals by the time they were 25 years old. 'It was special,' Witt admitted, 'just seeing the kind of names on the list or whatever they showed. But now, it's just kind of on to the next. It was special. We enjoy it. And now it's just onto the next game.' They keep getting more important for the Royals, who have won five straight and seven of their last eight. They head into the third-game of their four-game set against the Rangers on Wednesday night with a chance to inch closer to a wild-card spot, and they proved last year that they could do some postseason damage if they can only get in. Witt continues to be the catalyst of their second-half surge, too. He's hitting .291 with 18 homers and 69 RBIs. 'It's special when he goes out there,' said the Royals' Seth Lugo, who allowed just two runs on three hits while pitching into the seventh inning Tuesday night. 'I've been saying it for two years: He goes about his business the same way. He doesn't get up or down on himself. He's a master of consistency. That's what he does.' Witt also happens to be a slick fielder with a Gold Glove in his trophy case. But at the plate is where Witt has become a bona fide star. He led the majors with a .332 average last year, when he hit 32 home runs, stole 31 bases and finished with 109 RBIs. And while he may not quite replicate the average, homer total or RBI numbers in this campaign, he already has 32 stolen bases while getting caught just seven times. 'There's not too many guys that get to 100 (homers),' said Vinnie Pasquantino, who also homered Tuesday night. "And the fourth player in MLB history with 100 stolen bases? It's not a list I'll ever be on. I mean, it's kind of unbelievable. 'He's one of the best players in the league for a reason," Pasquantino said. 'A superstar.'

Erasmus makes 10 changes to Springboks lineup after shocking Rugby Championship loss to Australia
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus made 10 changes to his starting XV for Saturday's second test against Australia as the Rugby World Cup champions bid to avenge a shocking 38-22 home loss to the Wallabies last weekend. The overhaul reflects strategic changes and the absence of injured skipper Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit and both wingers from the Ellis Park defeat. Veteran center Jessie Kriel will stand in as captain for Kolisi and prop Ox Nche will be vice-captain, while Cheslin Koble, Damian de Allende and Willie le Roux return so the starting XV for the second round of the Rugby Championship. Kriel, Nche, Malcom Marx, Marco van Staden and Grant Williams are the only players retained for the starting lineup. Kriel and de Allende will combine in the Springboks midfield for the 38th time, and Handre Pollard returns at No. 10 to partner Williams in the halves. On top of the injuries, Erasmus said, "We also know where we went wrong against Australia last week, so we made a few changes that we believe will offer us what we need for this game. 'We are determined to get things right ... (and) it will be good for a few other guys to experience playing against one the top teams in the world, especially as we continue to build our squad depth." Erasmus said his full squad was 'all aligned' on where they need to lift after losing to the Wallabies at home for the first time since 2011. 'We are still hurting from that result, and the coaches and players are extremely disappointed with the way we played last week," he said. 'We let ourselves and the country down, so we have all the motivation we need to make things right.' The Wallabies sustained injuries in key positions and are expected to announce a match 23 on Thursday. ___ South Africa: Willie le Roux, Canan Moodie, Jesse Kriel (captain), Damian de Allende, Cheslin Kolbe, Handre Pollard, Grant Williams; Jean-Luc du Preez, Franco Mostert, Marco van Staden, Ruan Nortje, R.G.
