‘Keep going with me, we'll do this together' – Southport victims' dads say girls will be with them as they run marathon

The Sun24-04-2025

TWO dads whose daughters were killed in Southport last year have said their children will be with them when they run the London Marathon.
Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six, were murdered in a brutal stabbing spree in the Merseyside town on July 29, 2024.

The girls were enjoying a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class when Axel Rudakubana's attack took place.
Elsie and Alice's fathers will be taking part in the marathon in memory of their daughters.
Sergio Aguiar, Alice's father, will run alongside teachers from the school that his daughter and Bebe attended.
They are raising money to build a new playground at the Churchtown Primary School.
Mr Aguiar told BBC Breakfast he talks to Alice when he's running alone.
He said: "I tell her to keep going with me, that we're going to do this together, you're going to be with me - always."
Meanwhile David Stancombe said his daughter would be very proud of his efforts.
The pair had watched coverage of the London Marathon on TV together last year.
Little Elsie even suggested he should run the marathon in honour of her grandmother.
He said: "A little bit of me was like, 'oh yeah, alright Els'. I just never thought I would be running it for these reasons."
'SHE WAS PURE LIGHT' I have to defend Bebe's memory like a lioness protecting her cub, Southport stab victim's mum says in 1st TV interview
Bebe's parents, Lauren and Ben King, will also both be at the marathon to support the pair.
Mrs King said: "It is just incredible what they are both doing. And we want to be a part of it every step of the way."
Mr Aguiar will be running alongside Jinnie Payne, the headteacher of Churchtown Primary, as well as other members of staff.
He said: "We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community so far, not to mention the support across the country.
"Our serious training is ramping up now, and we're determined to get this done."
The new playground, which was proposed by Alice's parents, will contain a dedicated performance space and an indoor/outdoor library.
There are also plans to revitalise the early years' playground with a den-building area.
Ms Payne said the playground will be "a lasting monument" to Alice and Bebe's "amazing personalities".
Rudakubana, 18, who killed Alice, Bebe and Elsie, was jailed for a minimum of 52 years in January.

Gamlins Law Directors Complete Mount Toubkal Charity Challenge

Gamlins Law's Dafydd Roberts and Ron Davison Two directors at North Wales' largest law firm have raised funds for charity after successfully climbing North Africa's highest peak. Ron Davison, Managing Director of Gamlins Law, and fellow director Dafydd Roberts scaled Mount Toubkal in Morocco's Atlas Mountains in aid of the firm's nominated charity partner St Kentigern Hospice. Combined with Ron's running of the London Marathon in April, it means the pair have now raised almost £2,000 for St Asaph-based St Kentigern. Ron and Dafydd were part of a 10-strong group that took on the climb to the 4,167m (13,671 ft) peak. Last year, they climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania raising more than £3,500 for Prostate Cancer UK and LawCare, the mental health charity for the legal sector. Dafydd said: 'The whole trip was a great experience from spending time with the local Berber community through to the final ascent itself which saw us reach the summit an hour or so after sunrise. 'We encountered lots of different weather during the trip from really warm to ice and snow as we approached the summit to torrential rain and hailstones when we were coming down the mountain. Coping with the high altitude also provided a challenge. 'Experiencing life with the Berber community, with their villages set in the mountainside, was also something we won't forget, including an evening eating with our guide's family in their home. 'It was also humbling to see how the communities are continuing to rebuild after a devastating earthquake caused so much destruction a couple of years ago. 'Either side of the climb, we were fortunate to spend time in Marrakesh including a trip into the Sahara Desert.' Snowy conditions on Mount Toubkal Dafydd added: 'We are delighted to raise further vital funds towards the work of St Kentigern Hospice. The team at the hospice made a video for us wishing us good luck and that certainly helped to spur us on. 'We've got further climbs planned in the UK for later this year and are already plotting another trip abroad, possibly to the Alps or Himalayas next year.' The hospice provides specialist palliative and end of life care to patients with life limiting illness, and support to their families across its catchment area of Denbighshire, West Flintshire, and East Conwy. Clinical services are delivered free of charge to patients and their families. The hospice, which includes a 12-bed inpatient unit, employs 95 staff, supported by a large team of volunteers. It costs over £4.4 million a year to run. Gamlins Law, which employs over 85 people, has its head office at Morfa Hall in Rhyl and further offices in Mold, Ruthin, Denbigh, Abergele and Holywell.

BBC Breakfast halted as Sally Nugent reports tragic breaking news live on air

BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent interrupted the show to announce a news update just minutes into Monday's live episode. BBC Breakfast was halted as Sally Nugent announced breaking news live on air during Monday's episode of the show (June 16). During this morning's edition, Sally and her co-host Jon Kay brought viewers at home the latest news in the UK and across the globe, as usual. Scots weather presenter Carol Kirkwood was also in the studio to issue updates while John Watson was ready to deliver the sport segment. However, proceedings came to a sudden halt when Sally announced that a man in the US had been arrested after democratic state politician Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot dead in their home in Minnesota at the weekend. ‌ The 57-year-old suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, was apprehended on Sunday (June 15) night after a major two-day manhunt following the shooting deaths the previous day. Sally announced to BBC Breakfast viewers that cops in Minnesota have made an arrest in connection with the incident. ‌ A photograph of the suspect was then displayed on screen, alongside a breaking news banner, the Express reports. Sally continued: "Officers released this photograph of the suspect, who was captured in what the Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described as a complex and dangerous manhunt. "Melissa Hortman and her partner were shot on Saturday after the attacker posed as a police officer." The 55 year old was the top Democrat in the Minnesota House. Authorities have stated that Vance Luther Boelter also allegedly shot and wounded another democratic lawmaker. ‌ State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were reportedly at their home a few miles away when they were allegedly gunned down by the suspect. Local media have reported that the couple are now awake following surgery. Officers descended on a rural area to the west of Minneapolis late on Sunday following a tip that the suspect had been spotted there. ‌ Cops say the suspect was armed at the time of his arrest but gave himself up peacefully when challenged. Shortly after the news of the arrest was announced, Minnesota Mayor Jacob Frey praised the "skill and bravery" of multiple law enforcement agencies for apprehending the suspect. He wrote in a Facebook post: "I'm grateful that our law enforcement partners in Minnesota acted with urgency to arrest the shooter and bring him to justice." ‌ "Political violence is abhorrent, it cuts against the most basic moral fabric of our democracy. "It's critical that those who commit these acts be held accountable under the law. I'm glad that will happen here."
