‘Palantir Poses a Grave Threat to Americans,' Says Former U.S. Secretary of Labor

Former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich recently wrote in The Guardian that Palantir Technologies (PLTR) is a 'grave threat to Americans.' This is because he believes it's at the center of a dangerous mix that involves artificial intelligence, military power, mass data collection, and growing influence from tech billionaires who don't support democracy. Interestingly, it was reported earlier this year that Palantir was chosen by the Trump administration to help collect and combine huge amounts of personal data from agencies like the IRS, Department of Defense, and Homeland Security. As a result, Reich warns that this AI-powered 'super-database' could be used to go after immigrants, punish political opponents, and spy on everyday Americans, all under the name of government efficiency. Reich compares Palantir to the 'palantír' in The Lord of the Rings, a powerful object used to twist reality and manipulate people. Palantir's software already helps the military and law enforcement analyze personal data, and its CEO, Alex Karp, has said that the company's mission includes disrupting institutions, scaring enemies, and even eliminating them. But Reich's bigger concern is who is guiding it. Peter Thiel, Palantir's co-founder and biggest investor, helped Trump pick government advisors, many of whom used to work for him. Thiel has said that he prefers the politics of the 1920s, a time before women's voting rights and social programs, which Reich sees as a clear rejection of modern democracy. He believes that people like Thiel are using their money and power to reshape the government in ways that benefit themselves, not the public, by helping Trump build tools that could silence critics and control the population. Take Reich's Views with a Grain of Salt However, it is worth noting that Robert Reich served as a Democrat and likely has some bias. After all, it's not like the Democratic Party itself is free of faults. Indeed, in a candid three-hour interview on the 'Joe Rogan Experience' earlier this year, Meta (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg criticized the Biden administration for pressuring Facebook to censor COVID-19 content—even content that was true—while also admitting that his company went too far in complying with censorship demands, especially around the 2016 election. In addition, he revealed that government officials aggressively contacted Meta to demand the removal of satirical content and threatened consequences if action was not taken. Reflecting on these events, Zuckerberg said that he regretted falling into media narratives about misinformation and election interference, and described Meta's fact-checking system as overly biased and reminiscent of George Orwell's 1984. Separately, it is also worth noting that Karp previously pushed back against claims that Palantir had been involved in creating a database of personal information on Americans for the Trump administration. Is PLTR Stock a Buy? ‘This Too Shall Pass,' Say Tesla Bulls Amid Musk-Trump Clash

Electric vehicle maker Tesla (TSLA) is back in the spotlight as the feud between CEO Elon Musk and President Donald Trump has resurfaced. TSLA stock fell 5.3% yesterday owing to the fallout between the two, as Trump warned that the DOGE 'monster' would 'eat Elon.' However, Tesla's long-time bulls remain optimistic that this dispute will soon be resolved. Don't Miss TipRanks' Half-Year Sale Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! For example, ace hedge fund manager Cathie Wood stated that 'this too shall pass,' reflecting her continued confidence in Tesla's future. Wood believes that Tesla could reach a multi-trillion-dollar valuation by leveraging its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. At the same time, Wedbush's top analyst, Daniel Ives, stated that 'this situation will settle' because he believes that both of America's super personalities need each other, given the ongoing artificial intelligence (AI) arms race with China. Ives maintained his Buy rating and a Street-High price target of $500 on TSLA stock, which implies 66.3% upside potential from current levels. Daniel Ives Expects the Situation to Settle Soon Ives acknowledges that the renewed feud presents an overhang on Tesla stock, since the Trump administration controls and makes important decisions about government spending, regulatory approvals, and tax credits. He added that investors are concerned the Trump administration could take a more hawkish stance and increase scrutiny of Musk-related companies. Tesla's robotaxi potential depends on government decisions regarding autonomous vehicles, while SpaceX relies on contracts from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and the Department of Defense (DOD). Ives cautioned that it is not beneficial for Musk to be on Trump's bad side. Investors also want this nightmare to end soon, so Musk can fully focus on leading his businesses. The billionaire CEO is already burdened with leading sales efforts in the U.S. and Europe following the departure of his longtime confidant, Omead Afshar, from Tesla. Nonetheless, the top analyst believes the feud will end soon, as the two need each other to compete in the AI arms race against China. Is Tesla a Good Long-Term Investment? Overall, analysts remain cautious about Tesla's long-term stock trajectory. On TipRanks, TSLA stock has a Hold consensus rating based on 13 Buys, 12 Holds, and nine Sell ratings. Also, the average Tesla price target of $287.39 implies 4.4% downside potential from current levels. Year-to-date, TSLA stock has lost 25.5%.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia alleges he was tortured in El Salvador prison

Senator Chris Van Hollen, D-MD, speaks with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran immigrant living in Maryland and deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration, in San Salvador, El Salvador on Thursday, April 17, 2025. File photo by President Nayib Bukele/UPI | License Photo July 3 (UPI) -- Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man who was wrongfully deported in March, alleged in court documents filed Wednesday that he was tortured in an El Salvador prison. Lawyers for Abrego Garcia filed an amended complaint in his lawsuit against the Trump administration that outlines what happened with him after he was deported to the Central American country on March 15. Abrego Garcia told his lawyers that he was subjected to severe mistreatment upon arrival at El Salvador's Terrorism Confinement Center mega prison, enduring alleged severe beatings, severe sleep deprivation, inadequate nutrition and psychological torture. "Welcome to CECOT. Whoever enters here doesn't leave," a prison official told the detainees, including Abrego Garcia, who recounted his ordeal to his lawyers. Abrego Garcia alleged that he was forced to strip and issued prison clothing while authorities kicked him in the legs with boots and hit him on the head and arms to make him change clothes faster. His head was then shaved and he was marched to a cell while he was struck by wooden batons along the way. "By the following day, plaintiff Abrego Garcia had visible bruises and lumps all over his body," the lawyers wrote in the court documents. The detainees were then allegedly forced to kneel for around nine hours overnight as guards beat anyone who fell from exhaustion. "Abrego Garcia was denied bathroom access and soiled himself," his lawyers wrote. Later, authorities separated detainees who had visible gang-related tattoos from those who did not. Still, Abrego Garcia was threatened with being sent to the cells where alleged gang members would "tear" him apart. Abrego Garcia lost 31 pounds in the first two weeks of his detention and he was eventually transferred to another prison in Santa Ana, El Salvador. The latest court documents also lay into the Trump administration for its actions since Abrego Garcia was wrongfully deported, including defiance of orders by a federal judge to bring him back to the United States until he was abruptly returned in early June. Abrego Garcia, 29, was returned to last month to face two federal charges in Tennessee related allege migrant smuggling. He is currently being held in Nashville.
