Malaysia's top exporters to be honoured tomorrow
PETALING JAYA: Tomorrow night (May 20), Malaysia's most dynamic exporters will be honoured at the fifth edition of the Export Excellence Awards (EEA) – an event that celebrates not just trade performance, but also innovation, resilience and global ambition.
The EEA has evolved into a platform that highlights how Malaysian businesses are navigating shifting global dynamics and raising their competitiveness on the world stage.
The panel of eminent judges, drawn from both government and industry, was impressed by the quality and breadth of submissions.
Credit Guarantee Corp Malaysia Bhd bumiputra development and products senior vice-president Mohamed Azman Mohamed Taufik said the calibre of finalists this year stood out, showcasing the country's most innovative and resilient exporters.
'These companies demonstrate cutting-edge solutions, global competitiveness and a commitment to sustainability – reflecting the dynamism of Malaysia's trade sector,' he said.
Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry deputy secretary-general (trade) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa welcomed the diversity of participants.
'I am very happy with the wide range of the finalists, from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that are just embarking on their export journey, to well-developed companies that already have international footing.'
Adding to that, Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) strategic planning division senior director Raja Badrulnizam Raja Kamalzaman said sustainability featured prominently in many of the submissions.
'What stands out a lot is their emphasis on adopting sustainable practices in most of their operations, and not only for themselves but also ensuring that suppliers also align with their policies.'
He also underscored the role of innovation in driving long-term growth.
'You cannot stay the same all the time. If you don't innovate, you'll never get ahead of the competition...You have to maintain consistency and quality, and that's the role that innovation should play.'
Drawing from his experience working closely with SMEs, Mohamed Azman highlighted the strengths he observed among this year's shortlisted smaller exporters.
'One common thing that I found out is that they have original solutions – unique products or services they have created that can be commercialised and exported with high global standards.'
Meanwhile, Mastura encouraged companies to step forward and take part in awards like the EEA, noting that the process enables businesses to reflect on their strengths and benchmark themselves against peers.
This year's strong display of resilience and innovation among Malaysian exporters has also been deeply meaningful to Standard Chartered as a cross-border bank supporting the growing trade corridors and ecosystem.
'Reflecting on this year's EEA, I am reminded of our deep-rooted history in Malaysia as its oldest operating bank.
'We have the privilege of growing with this nation for over 150 years, and are now seeing the growth of Malaysian exports in globally competitive high-tech and high value sectors – including halal exports,' said Standard Chartered Saadiq Malaysia chief executive officer (CEO) Bilal Parvaiz.
'In 2024 alone, Malaysia's total exports reached RM1.51 trillion, a 5.7% year-on-year increase, within which halal product exports surged to RM61.79bil, a 15% increase from 2023. This exceptional performance has resulted in a trade surplus of RM136.88bil for the 27th consecutive year since 1998.
'The level of resilience and innovation our Malaysian exporters are showing – especially in the face of ongoing global uncertainties – is nothing short of inspiring.
'Leveraging our global network and local expertise, as well as our Islamic banking arm Standard Chartered Saadiq, we are able to play a pivotal role in supporting exporters through our syariah-compliant products and services to help them scale in fast-growing Islamic trade corridors across Asia, Africa and the Middle East.'
As the organiser of the EEA, Star Media Group Bhd (SMG) has had a front-row seat to Malaysia's evolving trade landscape – and the shift has been unmistakable.
'We take pride in witnessing how Malaysian exporters are evolving – not just to survive global headwinds, but to lead with purpose and agility,' said SMG CEO Chan Seng Fatt.
'In the past year, we've seen a notable shift toward innovation-led growth, ESG integration and a more strategic approach to market expansion. Malaysian exporters are demonstrating a deeper understanding of global standards and long-term competitiveness, which is essential as trade dynamics continue to shift.'
But for SMG, the awards are more than just a moment of recognition.
'At its core, the EEA is not just a ceremony – it is a catalyst for dialogue, knowledge-sharing and long-term growth.
'By bringing together stakeholders from across industries, we aim to spark meaningful conversations on how Malaysian businesses can stay competitive, sustainable and globally connected,' Chan added.
Stay tuned for the announcement of the winners.
The EEA 2024 is organised by SMG in partnership with Standard Chartered Malaysia, with PKT Logistics Group as a co-sponsor and Matrade as patron. It is audited by BDO.

Bursa Malaysia seen trading between the 1,500 and 1,530 level this week, pending fresh catalysts
KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) is set to trade between 1,500 and 1,530 points from Monday (Feb 9) onwards, pending fresh market catalysts, said an analyst. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said market attention is anticipated to revolve around several important economic indicators, such as China's May consumer price index (CPI), producer price index (PPI), and its unemployment figures. Investors will also monitor the US CPI and PPI for May, and industrial output from the Eurozone for April. "Domestically, the lack of market-moving news has kept the benchmark index in consolidation, and this is expected to carry over into the coming week,' he added. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said investors would also be monitoring South Korea's unemployment rate, Japan's first-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) revision, and India's CPI - all of which could influence sentiment across the region. While it remains difficult to adopt a fully constructive view at this juncture, he reckons downside risks to the FBM KLCI may be partially cushioned by undemanding valuations and continued ringgit strength. "That said, while Malaysian stocks may currently be undervalued, offering attractive entry points, a strengthening ringgit against the US dollar could increase the cost of entry for foreign investors, potentially raising the risk premium due to reduced competitiveness of export-oriented sectors,' he added. For the shortened week just ended, Bursa Malaysia was mostly lower on profit-taking, mainly due to cautious sentiment on the US-China trade talks and a lack of positive economic figures from the two countries. Bursa Malaysia Bhd and its subsidiaries were closed on Monday, June 2, 2025, in conjunction with the official birthday of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the barometer index fell 27.03 points to 1,508.35 from 1,508.35 a week earlier. The FBM Emas Index gained 55.54 points to 11,355.34, the FBMT 100 Index added 62.69 points to 11,123.69, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index climbed 72.96 points to 11,329.22. The FBM 70 Index picked up 95.06 points to 16,296.57, but the FBM ACE Index fell 31.71 points to 4,519.32. Across sectors, the Financial Services Index narrowed 132.23 points to 17,708.31, the Industrial Products and Services Index was 1.85 points easier at 150.80, and the Energy Index gained 10.41 points to 718.45. The Plantation Index grew 45.00 points to 7,252.85, but the Healthcare Index weakened 22.81 points to 1,794.14. Turnover fell to 9.80 billion units worth RM8.18 billion from 14.80 billion units valued at RM12.78 billion in the preceding week. The Main Market volume shrank to 4.50 billion units valued at RM7.21 billion against 7.21 billion units worth RM11.50 billion. Warrant turnover declined to 4.07 billion units worth RM533.43 million versus 5.90 billion units worth RM721.75 million a week ago. The ACE Market volume weakened to 1.22 billion units valued at RM432.22 million compared with 1.66 billion units worth RM543.90 million. - Bernama

Penang CM instructs review of 5% housing discount
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has instructed state housing committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo to review the 5% housing discount for first-time homebuyers among the Indian Muslim community. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said he has instructed Sundarajoo to review the policy with developers to expand the discount to all buyers, making it more inclusive and beneficial to all segments of society in line with the principle of social justice. "Some of the views received suggested that such a discount should also be offered to all buyers to revitalise the property sector, especially in relation to the sale of unsold property units," he said in a statement on Sunday (June 8). Chow stated that the state executive council will also examine the matter and make an appropriate decision in the interest of all parties. On Thursday (June 5), Sundarajoo announced that from June 1 this year until May 31 next year, developers would be encouraged to offer IndianMuslims who are first-time homebuyers a 5% discount under the Madani Home Ownership Campaign. He added that the discount excludes bumiputra quota units and does not affect existing housing policies. However, Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim, in a statement on Saturday (June 7), announced that Chow had agreed to suspend the discount offer pending a review by the state executive council, emphasising the importance of upholding social justice and ensuring every Malaysian's right to own a home. The initial policy announced by the state government earlier had been critised by MCA who described the move as racially divisive. State MCA secretary Yeoh Chin Kah questioned why the Penang government could not base its housing policy on economic status rather than race and religion, expressing confusion that DAP, a party advocating for a 'Malaysian Malaysia', would introduce such a racially framed initiative. "The people of Penang cannot accept this policy and condemn it for dividing the races,' he said. He also said by offering the privilege only to Indian Muslims, Yeoh questioned whether it amounted to a new form of racial quota. 'Don't low-income groups who are not Indian Muslims also need assistance? Shouldn't struggling families be treated equally and helped regardless of background?' he added.

UK govt announces £86 billion for science, tech and defence
Areas expected to be targeted by cuts include support for disabled people and government operating costs. (Envato Elements pic) LONDON : The UK government announced today £86 billion of investment in science and technology and defence by 2030, days before it unveils its spending plan for the coming years. Labour finance minister Rachel Reeves has announced drastic cuts to public budgets in recent months amid tight fiscal conditions and has also authorised more borrowing for investment, unlocking a total of £113 billion by the end of the decade. Within this framework, £86 billion will be invested 'to turbo-charge our fastest growing sectors, from tech and life sciences, to advanced manufacturing and defence,' the government said in a statement. Reeves is also set to announce a funding boost of up to £30 billion for the under-pressure National Health Service on Wednesday, when she presents the government's broader review of UK public spending over the coming years, according to The Times newspaper. The £86 billion investment will target 'people's priorities: health, security and the economy,' the government said. The investment plan will enable the development of 'innovation clusters' across the UK and give local government leaders powers to decide where their funding goes, it added. Reeves hopes the spending will boost sluggish growth, which is also likely to suffer from the trade war launched by US President Donald Trump. The government announced earlier this week that the review would include plans to double investment in public transport in England's urban regions by 2030, to over £15 billion. The defence ministry also seems certain to receive a budget boost in Wednesday's review, but other departments will have to tighten their belts beyond the cuts already announced in March. Areas expected to be targeted include support for disabled people and government operating costs. Thousands gathered in central London on Saturday to protest against those anticipated measures, with many holding placards reading 'tax the rich, stop the cuts – welfare not warfare'.
