Pakistan, China agree to boost air force ties with joint drills, tactical training
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have agreed to enhance cooperation between their air forces, focusing on joint exercises and advanced tactical training, during a visit by the Pakistani air chief to Beijing, according to an official statement released on Friday.
The two countries maintain close defense, diplomatic and economic relations. Their strategic partnership is exemplified by their collaboration on the JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, co-developed by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China's Chengdu Aircraft Corporation. The aircraft has been inducted into Pakistan's fleet and exported to countries including Myanmar, Nigeria, and Azerbaijan.
The Pakistan military's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said in a statement that Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu held a meeting with China's Defense Minister Admiral Dong Jun wherein both officials reaffirmed the joint commitment of the two countries to revitalize the existing bilateral military ties strategic cooperation.
'Both sides agreed on enhancing Air Force-to-Air Force cooperation, particularly through complex and aggressive tactical-level scenarios during aerial exercises,' the ISPR said. 'The cooperation is aimed at addressing challenges in multiple domains during joint exercises, equipping air and ground crew of both Air Forces with the skills necessary to counter modern Air and Space Warfare challenges effectively.'
During his visit, the Pakistani air chief also met with China's Air Force Commander General Chang Dingqiu and Major General Cao Xiaojian, Director General of the Bureau of Military Equipment and Technical Cooperation.
Sidhu's conversation with the Chinese officials focused on technology transfer and collaborative development of advanced military hardware.
He also invited Chinese defense companies to participate in its National Aerospace Science & Technology Park, offering incentives for developing projects in unmanned aerial systems, electronic warfare and space programs.
The air chief's visit underscored the strategic partnership between Pakistan and China, which extends beyond defense to include economic initiatives like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

The issues were discussed between Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic in Paris on Tuesday, according to the statement. The comments mark progress on matters that have vexed China's relationship with the European Union over the past year. Most recently, China's decision in April to suspend exports of a wide range of rare earths and related magnets has upended the supply chains central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world. The ministry said China attached great importance to the EU's concerns and "was willing to establish a green channel for qualified applications to speed up the approval process." Commerce Minister Wang during the meeting "expressed the hope that the EU will meet us halfway and take effective measures to facilitate, safeguard and promote compliant trade in high-tech products to China," according to the statement. In April, the European Commission said the EU and China had also agreed to look into setting minimum prices of Chinese-made electric vehicles instead of tariffs imposed by the EU last year. China's commerce ministry said the EU had also proposed exploring "new technical paths" relating to EVs, which the Chinese side was now evaluating.

BISHKEK: Russian ally Kyrgyzstan on Saturday quietly dismantled Central Asia's tallest monument to Vladimir Lenin, the revolutionary founder of the Soviet Union. Ex-Soviet states across the region are seeking to strengthen their national identities, renaming cities that have Russian-sounding names and replacing statues to Soviet figures with local and national heroes. Russia, which has military bases in Kyrgyzstan, is striving to maintain its influence there in the face of competition from China and the West and amid its invasion of Ukraine. Officials in the city of Osh — where the 23-meter (75 foot) high monument stood on the central square — warned against 'politicizing' the decision to 'relocate' it. Osh is the second largest city in the landlocked mountainous country. The figure was quietly taken down overnight and is set to be 'relocated,' Osh officials said. The decision 'should not be politicized,' city hall said, pointing to several other instances in Russia 'where Lenin monuments have also been dismantled or relocated.' 'This is a common practice aimed at improving the architectural and aesthetic appearance of cities,' it said in a statement. Despite some attempts to de-Sovietise the region, memorials and statues to Soviet figures are common across the region, with monuments to Lenin prevalent in the vast majority of cities in Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan was annexed and incorporated into the Russian Empire in the 19th century and then became part of the Soviet Union following the 1917 Bolshevik revolution. It gained independence with the collapse of the USSR in 1991.

Trump Says Fresh US-China Trade Talks in London Next Week
US President Donald Trump announced Friday a new round of trade talks with China in London next week, a day after calling Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in a bid to end a bitter battle over tariffs. The talks in the British capital on Monday will mark the second round of such negotiations between the world's two biggest economies since Trump launched his trade war this year. "The meeting should go very well," said Trump in a post on his Truth Social platform. The president added that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer would meet the Chinese team. The first talks between Washington and Beijing since Trump slapped levies on allies and adversaries alike took place in Geneva last month. While Trump had imposed a sweeping 10 percent duty on imports from most trading partners, rates on Chinese goods rocketed as both countries engaged in an escalating tariffs battle. In April, additional US tariffs on many Chinese products hit 145 percent while China hit back with countermeasures of 125 percent. Following the talks last month, both sides agreed to temporarily bring down the levels, with US tariffs cooling to 30 percent and China's levies at 10 percent. But this temporary halt is expected to expire in early August and Trump last week accused China of violating the pact, underscoring deeper differences on both sides. US officials have accused China of slow-walking export approvals of critical minerals and rare earth magnets, a key issue behind Trump's recent remarks. While Trump's long-awaited phone call with Xi this week likely paved the way for further high-level trade talks, a swift resolution to the tariffs impasse remains uncertain.
