
Cooking in Gaza is now a toxic affair
We used to know well the tiny click of a gas stove burner starting – that small spark at the start of a day that meant a hot meal or a cup of tea was coming. Now, that sound is gone, replaced by the hollow clang of emptiness.
We used our last drop of cooking gas in the middle of Ramadan. Like all other families in Gaza, we turned to firewood. I remember my mother saying, 'From today, we cannot even make a cup of tea for suhoor.'
That is because starting a fire, having even a flicker of light at night could attract a drone or a quadcopter, resulting in an air strike or a barrage of bullets. We don't know why light at night is targeted, but we know we don't have the right to ask.
So we ate cold food for suhoor and saved the fire for iftar.
After bakeries shut down due to the gas shortage last month, reliance on fire increased – not just for our family but for everyone. Many people built makeshift clay ovens or fires in alleyways or between tents to bake loaves of bread.
Thick, black smoke hangs heavy in the air – not the smoke of death from missiles, but the smoke of life that kills us slowly.
Each morning, we wake up coughing – not a passing cough, but a deep, persistent, choking cough that rattles through our chests.
Then, my brother and I walk to the edge of our neighbourhood, where a man sells wood from the back of a cart. He gathers it from bombed-out buildings, fallen trees, broken furniture, and the ruins of homes and schools.
We carry back whatever our weak bodies can and move on to the next suffering: burning the wood. This is not easy. It demands hours of chopping and breaking wood and breathing in dust. Our father, despite suffering from shortness of breath, insists on helping. This stubbornness of his has become the source of daily arguments, especially between him and my brother.
As we light the fire, our eyes turn red because of the smoke, our throats sting. The coughing intensifies.
Firewood has become incredibly expensive. Before the war, we would pay a dollar for eight kilos, but now you can buy only one kilo – or even less – for that price.
Impoverishment has forced many people to chop down their own trees. The greenery in our neighbourhood has all but disappeared. Many of our neighbours have started cutting down the trees they grew in their yards. Even we have begun using branches from our olive tree – the same tree we never dared touch when we were young, afraid that disturbing it would cause the blossoms to fall and yield fewer olives.
Families who have no trees to chop have turned to burning plastic, rubber and trash – anything that will catch fire. But burning these materials releases toxic fumes, poisoning the air they breathe and seeping into the food they cook. The taste of plastic clings to every bite, turning each meal into a health risk.
Constant exposure to this smoke can cause severe respiratory distress and chronic illnesses and even lead to life-threatening diseases such as cancer. Yet, what choice do people have? Without fire, there is no food.
There is something deeply cruel about the transformation of the kitchen – from a symbol of family and hospitality into a toxic zone. The fire that once meant warmth now burns our lungs and eyes. The meals cooked can hardly be called that: soup from lentils; bread from infested flour or flour mixed with sand. The joy of preparing food has been replaced by fear, pain and exhaustion.
This lack of cooking gas has done more than cripple our access to food – it has dismantled the rituals that hold families together. Meals are no longer a time to gather and enjoy family time but a time to endure. A time to cough. A time to pray that today's fire does not make someone too sick.
If a bomb does not kill us, we face a slower death: quiet, toxic and just as cruel.
This is Gaza today.
A place where survival means inhaling poison just to have a cup of tea in the morning.
A place where firewood has become more valuable than gold.
A place where even the simple act of eating has been weaponised.
And yet, we burn.
We cough.
We keep going.
What other choice do we have?

‘A death journey' for Palestinians desperately seeking aid at GHF sites
Starvation is spreading across the Gaza Strip, and the only organisation on the ground mandated to provide food aid stands accused of grave rights violations and the targeting of civilians. The controversial United States and Israel-backed GHF took over aid distribution in Gaza in May, after Israel eased its total blockade of the Strip. Since then, the United Nations says, more than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed trying to reach food. Many have been purposefully shot by Israeli soldiers or US security contractors hired by GHF, according to testimonies from whistleblowers published in the media. Still, in desperation to get any food they can to ensure survival, thousands of Palestinians brave the GHF sites every day. Al Jazeera spoke to mothers, fathers and children who said they saw soldiers open fire on aid seekers amid chaotic scenes as hungry people scrambled for flour and milk. 'What can I do?' The struggle trying to get food from a GHF-run distribution point in Gaza is 'a death journey', said one Palestinian woman, who we are not naming for her safety. 'I need to provide for my girls,' the woman, a mother of two, said. 'I don't have anyone to support me.' In her desperation, she visits the aid sites. There, the aid retrieval process is a violent scramble where only those who dare to push deep into the crowd return with anything, she said. 'There are children who worked hard to get [aid], and men come to take it from them.' After putting herself at risk, the woman left the aid site with only rice, cooking oil and a can of tomatoes, she said. Still, 'it's a blessing from God', she added, despite having hurt her arm after being hit in the crowd. A child speaking to Al Jazeera told of how going to a GHF site was his only option. 'I am going to get food for my siblings. My father was martyred. If I didn't go to bring it, my siblings would die from hunger. What can I do?' he asked. But at the distribution site, he said he saw hundreds of starving Palestinians shot dead. 'Shooting, killing, death' A Palestinian man, Ibrahim Mekki, from the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, said he waited at least six hours and risked being shot by Israeli forces just to end up with a few bags of pasta. 'Shooting, killing, death, destruction and martyrs,' he said of the scene. 'And for what? Just to get a little food. 'It's a trap, a game … Letting you move a little, then opening fire.' Mekki said an 'enormous' number of people had congregated at the aid site he went to, but he estimated just 5 percent succeeded in retrieving anything of value. 'Look at me, what did I get? Nothing,' he said, revealing two small bags of pasta and a bag of bulgur. 'It's not enough to feed the kids for a single day. I'm forced to go back every single day to try again.' 'He died in my arms' Another man, Rakan Jneid, told Al Jazeera he saw people rushing towards aid trucks near a distribution point – and some of them were run over. 'Today, milk came in and people started fighting each other to take the milk,' Jneid said. 'The Israelis opened fire to take advantage of the situation.' Another Palestinian, Muhannad Abu Jarad, also described seeing the Israeli army 'shooting at us'. Separately, a mother of eight told Al Jazeera that her five-month-old daughter is malnourished because she was not getting enough food during pregnancy. She had already lost her fourth child to malnutrition, she said. 'My fourth kid died … He was severely malnourished. We couldn't provide food for him or provide anything for the child to eat,' she said. 'He died in my arms as I was taking him to the hospital.'

‘We are starving': Bread becomes a distant dream for Palestinians in Gaza
Gaza City, Gaza Strip – Hani Abu Rizq walks through Gaza City's wrecked streets with two bricks tied against his stomach as the rope cuts into his clothes, which hang loose from the weight he has lost. The 31-year-old searches desperately for food to feed his mother and seven siblings with the bricks pressed against his belly – an ancient technique he never imagined he would need. 'We're starved,' he says, his voice hollow with exhaustion. 'Even starvation as a word falls short of what we're all feeling,' he adds, his eyes following people walking past. He adjusts the rope around his waist, a gesture that has become as routine as breathing. 'I went back to what people did in ancient times, tying stones around my belly to try to quiet my hunger. This isn't just war. It's an intentional famine.' The fading of Gaza's heartbeat Before October 7, 2023, and the start of Israel's war on Gaza, food was the heartbeat of daily life in Gaza. The days in Gaza were built around communal meals – breakfasts of zaatar and glistening olive oil, lunches of layered maqlooba and musakhan that filled homes with warmth, and evenings spent around trays of rice, tender meat and seasonal salads sparkling with herbs from gardens. Abu Rizq remembers those days with the ache of someone mourning the dead. The unmarried man used to love dining and gathering with family and friends. He speaks of comfortable dining rooms where home-cooked feasts were displayed like art and evenings were filled with desserts and spiced drinks that lingered on tongues and in memory. 'Now, we buy sugar and salt by the gram,' he says, his hands gesturing towards empty market stalls that once overflowed with produce. 'A tomato or cucumber is a luxury – a dream. Gaza has become more expensive than world capitals, and we have nothing.' Over nearly 22 months of the war, the amount of food in Gaza has been drastically reduced. The besieged enclave has been under the complete mercy of Israel, which has curtailed access to everything from flour to cooking gas. But since March 2, the humanitarian and essential items allowed in have plummeted to a frightening low. Israel completely blocked all food from March to May and has since permitted only minimal aid deliveries, prompting widespread international condemnation. Watching children suffer According to Gaza's Ministry of Health, at least 159 Palestinians – 90 of whom are children and infants – have died of malnutrition and dehydration during the war as of Thursday. The World Food Programme warns of a 'full-blown famine' spreading across the enclave while UNICEF reports that one in three children under five in northern Gaza suffers acute malnutrition. Fidaa Hassan, a former nurse and mother of three from Jabalia refugee camp, knows the signs of malnutrition. 'I studied them,' she tells Al Jazeera from her displaced family's shelter in western Gaza. 'Now I see them in my own kids.' Her youngest child, two-year-old Hassan, wakes up every morning crying for food, asking for bread that doesn't exist. 'We celebrated each of my children's birthdays with nice parties [before the war] – except for … Hassan. He turned two several months ago, and I couldn't even give him a proper meal,' she says. Her 10-year-old, Firas, she adds, shows visible signs of severe malnutrition that she recognises with painful clarity. Before the war, her home buzzed with life around mealtimes. 'We used to eat three or four times a day,' she recalls. 'Lunch was a time to gather. Winter evenings were filled with the aroma of lentil soup. We spent spring afternoons preparing stuffed vine leaves with such care. 'Now we … sleep hungry.' 'There's no flour, no bread, nothing to fill our stomachs,' she says, holding Hassan as his small body trembles. 'We haven't had a bite of bread in over two weeks. A kilo of flour costs 150 shekels [$40], and we can't afford that.' Hassan was six months old when the bombing began. Now, at two years old, he bears little resemblance to a healthy child his age. The United Nations has repeatedly warned that Israel's siege and restrictions on humanitarian aid are creating man-made famine conditions. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, only a fraction of the 600 truckloads of food and supplies required in Gaza daily, under normal circumstances, are coming through. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification system has placed northern Gaza in Phase 5: catastrophe/famine. Amid a lack of security, the trickle of humanitarian aid allowed to enter Gaza is subject to gangs and looting, preventing people in need from accessing scarce supplies. Furthermore, hundreds of desperate aid seekers have been shot dead by Israeli soldiers while trying to get humanitarian aid provided by the United States- and Israeli-backed GHF since May. Abundance as a distant memory Hala Mohammed, 32, cradles three-year-old Qusai in a relative's overcrowded shelter in Remal, a neighbourhood of Gaza City, as she describes how she has to watch him cry in hunger every morning, his little voice breaking. 'There's no flour, no sugar, no milk,' she says, her arms wrapped protectively around the child, who has known only war for most of his life. 'We bake lentils like dough and cook plain pasta just to fill our stomachs. But hunger is stronger.' This is devastating for someone who grew up in Gaza's rich culture of hospitality and generosity and had a comfortable life in the Tuffah neighbourhood. Before displacement forced her and her husband to flee west with Qusai, every milestone called for nice meals – New Year's feasts, Mother's Day gatherings, birthday parties for her husband, her mother-in-law and Qusai. 'Many of our memories were created around shared meals. Now meals [have become the] memory,' she says. 'My son asks for food and I just hold him,' she continues, her voice cracking. 'The famine spreads like cancer – slowly, silently and mercilessly. Children are wasting away before our eyes. And we can do nothing.' This piece was published in collaboration with Egab.
