DBKL beautifies KL to host Asean Summit 2025, upgrades over 30 key areas

Malay Mail22-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 — Kuala Lumpur has been ramping up its urban transformation initiatives ahead of the ASEAN Summit 2025 to strengthen its image as a progressive, clean, safe and competitive global city.
In a statement to Bernama, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said a wide range of cleaning, beautification, and infrastructure and landscape upgrading initiatives have been aggressively implemented throughout the capital.
The measures include more frequent rubbish collection and street sweeping, along with the replacement of 224 old rubbish bins with newly designed modern ones.
In efforts to create more sustainable spaces, 40 rubbish collection centres have also been upgraded and decorated with murals, while daily 'litter picker' teams are deployed to clean green areas along main routes.
Community initiatives are also encouraged through plogging activities (jogging while picking up litter) held on the third Sunday of every month, involving residents, non-governmental organisations, students and local communities.
'These steps are part of a comprehensive plan to ensure Kuala Lumpur is truly prepared to host this regional summit,' the statement said.
As the chair and host of ASEAN 2025, Malaysia will host the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from May 26 to 27.
In conjunction with the summit, two key high-level meetings - the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit will also take place, marking an important platform for expanded regional and inter-regional cooperation.
Malaysia will also host the ASEAN Summit with Dialogue Partners at the end of October this year.
According to DBKL, the upgrading and beautification of over 30 key areas in the capital is being carried out in phases, including the construction of walkways and road resurfacing, and is expected to be completed by the middle of the year.
Key locations include Jalan Stesen Sentral, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Conlay and Jalan Bangsar, while greener elements are being introduced along Lebuhraya Mahameru, Jalan Parlimen and Dataran Merdeka with the planting of ornamental trees, evergreen tropical landscaping and seasonal flowers.
A maintenance and building-cleaning campaign has also been launched, urging premises owners in high-traffic areas to repaint their buildings and maintain cleanliness.
In line with the smart city approach, DBKL has established a Public Incident Operations Room that functions as a central emergency response and monitoring coordination hub, supported by more than 5,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the city.
'We are confident these efforts will not only enhance Kuala Lumpur's profile as the host of ASEAN 2025, but also elevate the capital's image as a progressive, sustainable and inclusive city, in line with Malaysia's aspiration to be an exemplary ASEAN host,' it said. — Bernama

‘Nasi kerabu' metaphor of US-Malaysia ties at independence day do

US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan, in his address, noted the dish's red, white and blue hues along with its variety of ingredients and spice as a perfect metaphor for the sometimes 'spicy' relationship between both nations. 'Beyond the ties between the United States and Malaysia, one of my favourite things is the food. 'If you look at a plate of nasi kerabu, you'll see some red, some white and some blue. 'I think that reflects the partnership between our countries: there's variety and a little bit of spice. 'There are times when the relationship of both countries is a little spicier than we'd like, but it also makes it interesting and it means that when we work together it is so valuable and means so much to us,' he said at the event earlier this week by the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the 249th anniversary of US independence. The celebration at St Regis Hotel Kuala Lumpur was attended by members of the Malaysian government, foreign heads of mission and business leaders from both the US and local companies. Kagan (right), with Amir Hamzah on stage, making a toast at the US Independence Day celebration in Kuala Lumpur. The US Independence Day falls on July 4. Guest-of-honour Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan was welcomed by Kagan, before being escorted to the stage by US Marine Corps personnel. They then toasted to the prosperity and enduring ties between both governments and countries. This was followed by the playing of the national anthems Negaraku and The Star-Spangled Banner. Kagan expressed gratitude to his embassy colleagues and the hotel for making the event a success. 'Recently, I've had the great pleasure of working together with Malaysian colleagues on the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire. 'I just want to say that it's been so wonderful seeing the tremendous professionalism of our Malaysian friends as we worked together to try and deal with a real problem,' he added. Also present at the celebration were Armed Forces chief Jeneral Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, the embassy's deputy chief of mission David Gamble, Amir Hamzah's wife Datin Seri Aidah Abu and Kagan's wife Cynthia L. Gire. Guests enjoyed performances by Orkestra Kuala Lumpur from Kuala Lumpur City Hall. Also featured at the event was a spread of American food, with regional favourites such as roast chicken with Cajun sauce, deep-fried cod fish and chips as well as a selection of desserts.

Bung to testify in graft case on Monday

Bung Moktar Radin and Zizie Izette Abdul Samad were ordered to enter their defence last November on charges of corruption and abetment over a RM150 million Felcra investment. KUALA LUMPUR : Bung Moktar Radin, who was ordered to enter his defence on charges of corruption over a RM150 million Felcra investment almost three years ago, is expected to take the witness stand at the sessions court on Monday. M Athimulan, the lawyer for the Kinabatangan MP and Sabah Umno chief, confirmed the matter. 'Yes, the defence will begin their case on Monday,' he told FMT in a text message. The trial, to be presided over by sessions court judge Rosli Ahmad, is also fixed for Tuesday and Wednesday. On Sept 2, 2022, then sessions court judge Rozina Ayob ordered Bung and his wife, Zizie Izette Abdul Samad, to enter their defence after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against them. Zizie is charged with abetting her husband. The High Court acquitted them of the charges following a revision application after it ruled that Rozina had erred in calling them to answer the charges. Last year, the Court of Appeal allowed the prosecution's appeal to order the couple to enter the defence, saying that the revision application was premature. Three months ago, Bung and Zizie failed to set aside the appellate court's decision. Bung, the non-executive chairman of Felcra at the time, was charged with two counts of receiving bribes of RM2.2 million and RM262,500 as an inducement to obtain Felcra's approval to invest RM150 million in Public Mutual unit trusts. He is alleged to have accepted bribes from Norhaili Madhi, a Public Mutual investment agent, through Zizie. He was also charged with receiving a bribe of RM337,500 from Norhaili under Zizie's name at the same location on June 19, 2015. Zizie faces three charges of abetting Bung in the commission of the alleged offences. Lawyer K Kumaraendran is appearing for Zizie, while deputy public prosecutors Law Chin How and Fadhly Zamry are representing the prosecution.

Court to hear MCMC's contempt bid against Telegram on Sept 24

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission obtained an interim injunction order against Telegram from the Kuala Lumpur High Court on July 13. KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court here will hear the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's application to initiate contempt proceedings against Telegram on Sept 24. Justice Mahazan Mat Taib fixed the date after Daniel Bock, the lawyer representing Telegram, informed the court they needed 14 days to file a reply. Both MCMC, represented by lawyer SN Nair, and Telegram were ordered to file their submissions by Sept 19. The court also set Sept 11 to deliver its decision on MCMC's separate bid for a full injunction against Telegram. The contempt bid, filed yesterday, alleges that the messaging platform failed to comply with one of the terms of an ex parte injunction granted on July 17. On June 19, MCMC announced it had sued Telegram and two of its channels – Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas – for allegedly spreading harmful content that could erode trust in public institutions and threaten social order. Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas are anonymous channels known for publishing whistleblower-style allegations, particularly targeting public institutions and enforcement agencies. Despite being unofficial, their posts often gain traction and trigger public debates.
