
Unilever to acquire men's personal care brand Dr Squatch
The company said the 'complementary acquisition marks another step in expanding Unilever's portfolio towards premium and high-growth spaces'.
The retail and DTC brand is built on 'natural, high-performance personal care products' including natural soaps and body washes, deodorants, hair care, skin care, and other men's grooming products with 'unique scents and quality ingredients'.
And the company was drawn to its 'viral social-first marketing strategies, partnerships with influencers and celebrities, and culturally-relevant collaborations' with limited-edition packs that have 'helped to drive sales and grow a loyal consumer following on social media platforms and beyond'.
Fabian Garcia, president of Unilever Personal Care said: 'Dr Squatch has built a solid foundation and loyal following with highly desirable products and clever digital engagement strategies. Building on its success in the US, we are excited to scale the brand internationally and complement our offering in the fast-growing men's personal care segment.'

US envoy to discuss long-term ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah
The US special envoy to Lebanon said on Monday that his team would hold talks with Israel on a long-term ceasefire after Beirut endorsed a Washington-backed plan for Hezbollah to disarm. Following a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Beirut, Tom Barrack also said Washington would seek an economic proposal for post-war reconstruction in the country. "I think the Lebanese government has done their part. They've taken the first step," said Barrack. "Now what we need is for Israel to comply with that equal handshake." Barrack is due to meet with both Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who often negotiates on behalf of Hezbollah with Washington. Earlier this month, the Lebanese government approved a decision requiring the army to urgently develop a disarmament plan against Hezbollah and implement it before the end of the year. However, the move angered the Iran-backed group, who believe the Israeli military should first withdraw from a region in southern Lebanon that it has occupied since the end of its 14-month-war with Hezbollah last November. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem threatened open confrontation if the Lebanese government proceeds with their plans to disarm the group, calling the cabinet decision an implementation of "US-Israeli orders." Both Aoun and Salam have urged Hezbollah and other non-state armed groups to disarm. They have also demanded Israel stop near-daily airstrikes on Lebanon and withdraw from the country. Aoun said he wants to increase funding for Lebanon's cash-strapped military to bolster its capacity. He also wants to raise money from international donors to help rebuild the country. The war between Hezbollah and Israel in late 2024 cost $11.1 billion (€9.5 billion euro) in damage and economic losses, according to the World Bank, as large swathes of southern and eastern Lebanon were battered. The country has also faced a crippling economic crisis since 2019.

Google to pay €30M fine for anti-competition deals in Australia
Google has agreed to pay a 55 million Australian dollar (€30.1m) fine for signing anticompetitive deals with Australia's two largest telcos that banned the installation of competing search engines on some smartphones, the US tech giant and Australia's competition watchdog said. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said in a statement it had commenced proceedings in the Australian Federal Court on Monday against the Singapore-based Google Asia Pacific division. The court will decide whether the AU$50 million (€27.9m) penalty is appropriate. Restricting competition is illegal in Australia Under the anticompetitive agreements, which were in place for 15 months until March 2021, Telstra and Optus only pre-installed Google Search on Android phones sold to customers. Other search engines were excluded. In return, the telcos received a share of the advertisement revenue Google generated from those customers. Google accepted that the agreements were likely to have the effect of 'substantially lessening competition,' the commission said. Google has also signed a court-enforceable undertaking that commits the company to removing certain pre-installation and default search engine restrictions from its contracts with Android phone manufacturers and telcos, the commission said. The tech company said in a statement: 'We're pleased to resolve the ACCC's concerns, which involved provisions that haven't been in our commercial agreements for some time.' Commissioner chair Gina-Cass Gottlieb said: "Conduct that restricts competition is illegal in Australia because it usually means less choice, higher costs or worse service for consumers.' 'Importantly, these changes come at a time when AI search tools are revolutionising how we search for information, creating new competition,' Cass-Gottlieb added. Last year, Telstra, Optus and their smaller rival TPG agreed to court-enforceable undertakings with the commission that they would not renew or make similar deals with Google to limit search options.

Air Canada suspends plan to resume flights as union vows to continue strike
Air Canada on Sunday, August 17, suspended its plan to resume flights over a strike by flight attendants that has effectively shut down the airline and snarled summer travel for its passengers around the world. The announcement came despite the country's industrial relations board ordering an end to the strike by around 10,000 flight attendants, which had prompted the airline to say it would resume flying on Sunday. "Air Canada... has suspended its plan to resume limited flying by Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge," citing a decision by the union representing the workers to continue with striking, despite the government directive. "The airline will resume flights as of tomorrow evening," the flag carrier said in a statement. Earlier, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) "directed Air Canada to resume airline operations and for all Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants to resume their duties by 14:00 EDT on August 17, 2025," the airline said. Air Canada cabin crew walked off the job early Saturday after rejecting an updated contract proposal. Hours later, Canada's labor policy minister, Patty Hajdu, invoked a legal provision to halt the strike and force both sides into binding arbitration. "The directive, under section 107 of the Canada Labour Code, and the CIRB's order, ends the strike at Air Canada that resulted in the suspension of more than 700 flights," the Montreal-based carrier said. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which is representing the workers, sought wage increases as well as to address uncompensated ground work, including during the boarding process. 'Our members will NOT be returning' In a statement on Sunday, CUPE's Air Canada unit said the strike would continue. "CUPE National President Mark Hancock made it loud and clear that our members will NOT be returning to work until such time as the government orders Air Canada back to the bargaining table where we can reach an attempted agreement that our members can vote on," it said. "We will not have our rights and protections removed." The union urged passengers not to go to the airport if they had a ticket for Air Canada or its lower-cost subsidiary Air Canada Rouge. CUPE earlier slammed the Canadian government's intervention as "rewarding Air Canada's refusal to negotiate fairly by giving them exactly what they wanted," adding, "this sets a terrible precedent." The union also pointed out that the chairwoman of CIRB, Maryse Tremblay, previously worked as legal counsel for Air Canada. Tremblay's ruling on whether to end the strike was "an almost unthinkable display of conflict-of-interest," the union posted on Facebook. On Thursday, Air Canada detailed the terms offered to cabin crew, indicating a senior flight attendant would, on average, make CAN$87,000 ($65,000) by 2027. CUPE has described Air Canada's offers as "below inflation (and) below market value." In a statement issued before the strike began, the Business Council of Canada warned an Air Canada work stoppage would exacerbate the economic pinch already being felt from US President Donald Trump's tariffs. Canada's flag carrier counts around 130,000 daily passengers and flies directly to 180 cities worldwide.
