
Conservationists are giving rhinos radioactive horns to save them from poachers
"You basically drill a hole in the horn, put a carefully selected radio isotope into the horn in a couple of places, then you seal it up, you reverse the tranquillizer, and you send the rhino on its way for the next five years," he told As It Happens guest host Paul Hunter.
"It's easy. All done and dusted in a couple of minutes."
Larkin is the chief science officer at the Rhisotope Project, which aims to protect South Africa's critically endangered rhinos by making their horns radioactive.
The doses, he says, are too weak to pose any risk to the animals, but strong enough to set off nuclear security system alarms at international border crossings. The goal is to deter people from poaching rhinos, and catch those who do.
Scientists who are not involved in the project welcome the innovative effort to protect the critically endangered animals, but stress that this work alone not enough to save them.
Low doses proved safe in trial
The Rhisotope Project project is a collaboration between nuclear energy officials and conservationist scientists, in partnership with South Africa's University of the Witwatersrand, where Larkin is the director of the Radiation and Health Physics Unit.
"Having seen enough of those videos of animals being mutilated … it came to me that, hey, maybe I could do something about it using my background," he said.
First, he says, they had to make sure that it worked, and was safe for the rhinos.
So over the last six years, he and his colleagues have been testing the idea, first in the lab with computational modelling to determine the safest effective dose, and later in the field, where they injected 20 black and white rhinos at the Rhino Orphanage in South Africa's Limpopo province.
Followup studies on the rhinos, he says, showed no negative effects from the radiation, which he says is the human equivalent of getting three CT scans a year.
"No, it will not harm the animals and, no, they won't glow in the dark." Larkin said.
The radiation is, however, strong enough to set off radiation detectors at airports and other border crossings.
"Over the years, because of the threat of nuclear terrorism, these detectors have been installed around the world at harbours, airports and places like that to stop the illicit movement of radioactive material," Larkin said.
"So we're standing on the shoulders of that in many ways. The systems are there. The operating procedures are there. So we've just merely said: let's use that to help reduce the trafficking of rhino horn."
The goal, he says, is not only to catch people trafficking the horns, but to deter other poachers from even bothering to try.
It's one of several novel approaches to rhino conservation in recent years. A study published last year also showed that de-horning rhinos reduced poaching by 78 per cent over a seven-year period on eight reserves.
De-horning doesn't affect the animals' health or ability to procreate, but a 2023 study found it may impact their behaviour, causing them to socialize less and reduce the size of their home ranges.
Hundreds of rhinos killed every year
The Rhisotope Project has injected five rhinos so far outside the original trial group, but are hoping their work will lead to mass injections across the country. They're encouraging private wildlife park owners and national conservation authorities to sign on.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature estimates that the global rhino population stood at around 500,000 at the beginning of the 20th century but has now declined to around 27,000 due to continued demand for rhino horns on the black market.
South Africa has the largest population of rhinos with an estimated 16,000 but the country experiences high levels of poaching with about 500 rhinos killed for their horns every year.
Larkin says a rhino horn can fetch as much as $60,000 US ($82,000 Cdn) on the black market. It's sometimes used in traditional medicines in Asian countries, but Larkin says their main purpose is as a symbol of wealth and status.
"Nowadays, it's being able to show off to your friends and business colleagues, to be honest," he said.
Berger says he hopes this method can be adapted to protect other highly poached animals, and says he's already in talks with conservationists who work to protect elephants, which are poached for their horns, and pangolins, which are hunted for their scales.
Joel Berger, a wildlife ecologist at Colorado State University who is not involved in the project, welcomed the initiative.
"Having studied black and white rhinos in southern Africa and watching the gruesome toll of poaching, now — some 30 years later — it's incredibly exciting that new technologies are being tested to try to thwart the illicit trade," Berger told CBC in an email.
"The use of radioactive isotopes implanted in horns to enhance detectability of smuggled horns across borders offers hope to capture greedy marketers of the world's innocent icons."
Still, he says, it's not enough on its own to save the rhinos. Authorities also need to crack down on the criminal networks that keep the rhino horn trade alive, he said.

Scientists search for DNA of an endangered salamander in Mexico City's canals

(AP Photo/Marco Ugarte) MEXICO CITY — Sixty years ago, residents of a canal-crossed borough in Mexico City could pluck axolotls — the large salamander reminiscent of a tiny dragon — out of the water with their hands because they were so plentiful. Now it's almost impossible to find them in the wild. That's why scientists from Mexico's National Autonomous University are filtering Xochimilco's murky waters for traces of the endangered creature's DNA. 'We all shed DNA along our path across the world and that can be captured by filtering air or water,' said biologist Luis Zambrano, from the university's ecological restoration lab. As they try to monitor the axolotls' dwindling numbers, scientists increasingly rely on this technique as their nets come back empty during periodic surveys of the population, which is only found in Xochimilco. They sample water taken from the canals and filter it for environmental DNA, or the genetic particles left by animals and plants that have contact with the water. That's then compared to the profiles contained in a genetic library put together some years ago by British scientists, said Esther Quintero of Conservation International in Mexico, which has collaborated with Zambrano since 2023. Scientists collected water from 53 locations in Xochimilco: 10 inside refuges where water is filtered and the water is cleaner and 43 outside those areas. They found axolotl DNA inside the protected areas and in one site outside them. Referring to the one unprotected area, Zambrano said 'it's very little,' but a sign that there is the possibility of resilience, even with continuing environmental degradation and pollution of the canals. So far, the researchers have only searched a third of Xochimilco with the environmental DNA technique and the manual work with nets, but they plan to continue the work and hopefully present an updated census early next year. The trend, however, is not good. From an estimated 6,000 axolotls per square kilometre in 1998, there were only 36 per square kilometre in the last census, in 2014. Zambrano highlights that his team's work has shown that conservation works and that the effort to protect the species is also improving water quality, increasing the number of pollinizers in the area and means that Mexico City makes better use of Xochimilco's water, among other benefits. But policymakers can do more, he said, such as prohibiting the opening of dance clubs, spas and soccer fields on Xochimilco's traditional man-made islands, known as chinampas. Instead, the government should incentivize the islands' traditional agricultural production, ensuring that farmers can actually make a living at it. If its habitat is fixed, the axolotl can take care of the rest. Hologic's Diagnostics Arm Set for Long-Term Upside: What's Behind It?
Hologic 's HOLX Diagnostics unit, the largest by revenues, has been the most impacted by geopolitical headwinds this year. Cuts in USAID funding have affected its HIV testing business in Africa, while a challenging operating environment in China has weighed on its Cytology business. As a result, Diagnostics posted just 0.9% year-over-year reported growth in the third quarter of fiscal 2025. Despite these hurdles, the underlying growth drivers in the segment continue to remain strong. One is the BV, CV/TV assay, which has become Hologic's second-largest assay globally after shifting from a primarily lab-developed test (LDT) approved in 2019 to an in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) test on the high-throughput Panther instrument. The company is working to reach the estimated 60% of U.S. women who are not tested when they experience vaginitis, applying the same approach it uses to expand sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. Additionally, Panther Fusion, an add-on module to the base Panther platform, is gaining nice traction this year as customers adopt more menus. The system uses PCR chemistry to run Hologic's suite of respiratory assays, including influenza, while offering an expanded IVD menu and Open Access functionality for LDTs. Open Access testing kits contributed to Fusion's solid growth in the fiscal third quarter. Over the next several years, Hologic plans to broaden the menu by launching an IVD test for GI and hospital-acquired infections, positioning the sidecar to play a key role in future Diagnostics growth. The company is also currently in the early stages of its Biotheranostics opportunity. Acquired in 2021, the asset marked Hologic's entry into the lab-based oncology space, an expanding and longtime area of interest. Biotheranostics' Breast Cancer Index test — the only commercially available test validated to inform the decision regarding extended endocrine therapy — continues to see strong adoption. Latest Updates From Hologic's Diagnostics Peers Abbott 's ABT Diagnostics sales declined 1.5% in the second quarter of 2025, mainly due to the year-over-year decrease in COVID-19 testing sales and the impact of volume-based procurement programs in China. Together, these are expected to weigh on ABT's full-year Diagnostics sales growth by around $700 million or 750 basis points. Excluding China, Abbott's Core Lab Diagnostics grew 8%, reflecting strong underlying demand in the global markets. Danaher 's DHR core sales growth in the molecular diagnostics business witnessed growth in the second quarter of 2025, as gains in non-respiratory testing more than offset declines in core sales of respiratory tests. Danaher also announced a new partnership with AstraZeneca to develop diagnostic tools that identify patients most likely to benefit from precision medicine treatments. This collaboration is leveraging the newly launched Danaher Centers to enable precision medicine to streamline the end-to-end development process.
