Iraq: No threat to salaries despite oil price drop
Shafaq News/ Iraq has secured funding for public sector salaries despite a recent drop in global oil prices, a senior government adviser said on Sunday.
According to Mudher Mohammed Saleh, financial and economic adviser to Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the salaries for civil servants, retirees, and social protection recipients are fully covered in the 2025 federal budget and will not be affected by fluctuations in oil prices.
'The government's top priority is ensuring the payment of salaries, and they are fully secured for the coming period,' he added.
Iraq relies on oil exports for more than 90% of its revenue. A drop in oil prices can significantly impact its budget, prompting concern among economists over the state's ability to meet payroll obligations without borrowing.
Analysts have also warned that external pressures, including recent US import tariffs affecting Iraqi goods, could worsen fiscal pressures. Iraq has previously turned to borrowing during similar downturns.

Iran rejects US nuclear proposal over sanctions relief lack

Speaking ahead of a public parliament session, Ghalibaf reaffirmed Iran's readiness to demonstrate the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, while emphasizing that this remains contingent on genuine sanctions relief and tangible economic benefits. According to Ghalibaf, the US continues to press for restrictions on Iran's enrichment program while offering only vague commitments lacking legal or practical clarity. 'They smile in front of the cameras and talk of economic relief, but in reality, not only do they avoid lifting sanctions, they don't even promise to. It is clear that no rational logic would accept such a unilateral and imposed agreement,' he explained. Turning to US President Donald Trump, Ghalibaf called for a change in approach. 'If Trump truly seeks a deal, he must abandon his coordination with the Zionist regime and [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu's failed policies.' Indirect nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington, facilitated by Omani mediators, resumed on April 12 and have completed five rounds. Discussions have focused on the scope of uranium enrichment and the sequencing of sanctions relief, though significant gaps remain. Last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on X that Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi had delivered the components of the US proposal to Tehran during a brief visit. 'Iran will respond appropriately based on principles, national interests, and the rights of the Iranian people to the proposal,' his post read.

Iraq's oil export volume to US falls by 21,000 bpd
Shafaq News/ Iraq's crude oil exports to the United States dropped last week, according to data released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) on Sunday. The EIA reported that total US crude imports from nine major suppliers averaged 5.491M barrels per day (bpd) during the past week—down by 309,000 bpd from the previous week's 5.800M bpd. Iraqi oil exports to the US averaged 214,000 bpd, a decline of 21,000 bpd compared to the 235,000 bpd recorded the previous week. Canada remained the top exporter to the US, shipping an average of 3.519M bpd, followed by Saudi Arabia (578,000 bpd), Brazil (409,000 bpd), and Mexico (387,000 bpd). Both Colombia and Iraq each contributed 214,000 bpd.
