Fiona Pender: Missing woman investigation upgraded to murder
The disappearance of Fiona Pender, who has been missing for almost 29 years, has been upgraded to a murder investigation.Ms Pender, a former model, was seven months pregnant when she disappeared in 1996.She was last seen at about 06:00 local time on the morning of 23 August, at her flat on Church Street in Tullamore, County Offaly.Gardaí (Irish police) commenced searches in an open area close to Killeigh, County Offaly, on Monday.
The area of land will be searched and subject to excavation, technical and forensic examinations over the coming days.This is the first time gardaí have described the case as a murder investigation.
There has been a "sustained investigation" over the past 28 years, during which "significant enquiries" have been carried out to establish Ms Pender's whereabouts, gardaí said on Monday."Over the course of this investigation, the investigation team have discovered and collated thousands of documents/reports, taken in excess of 300 statements of evidence and retained a number of exhibits."To date five people have been arrested and detained in connection with this investigation."No person has been brought to justice for the disappearance and murder of Fiona at this time," a gardaí spokesperson added.Ms Pender was described as being 5'5" in height, with long blonde hair. She was wearing bright coloured clothing and white leggings when she went missing.She had spent the day before her disappearance shopping with her mother in Tullamore and was said to have been in good form and looking forward to the birth of her baby. Her remains have never been located.

James Wood, 34, was taken into custody on Wednesday and released several hours later without charge, police said in an update on Thursday. The Gin Gin property near Bundaberg and a grey Hyundai ix35, thought to have been used to take Pheobe to the airport, were declared crime scenes soon after her disappearance. Wood and Pheobe's other housemate, Tanika Kristan Bromley, have since been charged with weapons offences. Bromley was granted bail at Bundaberg magistrates court to reappear on 23 June while Wood was issued a notice to appear on 13 June. The weapons charges were unrelated to Pheobe's disappearance, police said, and there is no suggestion Bromley or Wood were involved. The police search initially focused on Good Night Scrub national park, an hour's drive from Bundaberg airport, with homicide detectives, cadaver dogs and divers called in. Some items believed to be linked to the investigation were seized for forensic examination. The search revealed evidence might have been moved from the national park before police arrived. 'What I do know is that people have information on where you are Phee and we need that reported to police.' Missing teenager Pheobe Bishop's housemate has been released without charge after hours of questioning. Pheobe was last seen on May 15 leaving a rundown home in Gin Gin, near Bundaberg, where she had been living with couple Tanika Kristan Bromley and James Wood. Queensland Police say the pair told detectives they drove Pheobe to Bundaberg Airport for an 8.30am flight to Brisbane and then on to Perth, where she planned to meet up with her boyfriend. Pheobe failed to board and neither she nor her luggage have been seen since, with police revealing her neither her phone or bank accounts have been accessed. Her housemate, James Wood was taken into custody in Bundaberg on Wednesday. Police secured his car on Bolewski Street, in Bundaberg, before taking him into custody. Wood had been living in his car in the area since the Gin Gin property was declared a crime scene while Bromley has been staying with family on the outskirts of town. Police questioned the 34-year-old in connection with Pheobe's disappearance Queensland Police confirmed on Thursday he has been released. North Carolina law enforcement outraged over bond for suspect in house party shooting
North Carolina local law enforcement expressed frustration on Wednesday that a man charged in connection with last weekend's shooting around a house party that left one person dead and 11 others injured had been out of jail for unrelated charges lodged against him in April. Garon Nathaniel Killian, 20, of Lenoir, was arrested Tuesday and accused of one count of attempted first-degree murder related to the shooting in a residential neighborhood about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of Hickory. Killian remained in the Catawba County jail after a hearing Wednesday before a district court judge who said he could be released awaiting trial if a $200,000 bond was posted. Prosecutors had requested that no bond be allowed, media outlets reported. Authorities announced at a media briefing later Wednesday that they were seeking to apprehend three additional suspects — one facing a charge of attempted first-degree murder and two facing a charge of helping someone under age 21 possess alcoholic beverages. Killian also is expected to face additional charges, sheriff's Maj. Aaron Turk said. A previous Hickory Police Department press release said Killian and another young man had been charged with several counts — including attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill — for an April 6 altercation in a parking lot that led to shots being fired into a crowd. No one was injured. The Charlotte Observer, citing court records, said that Killian had been free on a $100,000 bond. Killian's attorney now and for the April case didn't respond to phone and email messages Wednesday. 'I believe he should have never went back on the street after Hickory Police Department charged him with those crimes,' Brown said. 'This is frustrating. It's infuriating.' At least 80 shots were fired beginning early Sunday shortly after midnight in a crime scene that spanned several properties along a neighborhood road, authorities said. People reported running, ducking for cover and scrambling to their cars for safety. FBI agents were still at the scene Wednesday working to determine the trajectories of the bullets that were fired. Shawn Patrick Hood, 58, of Lenoir, was killed in the gunfire. He was the oldest of the victims, who ranged in age from as young as 16, the sheriff's office said. Turk said that most of those injured were shot, but he didn't immediately have information Wednesday on whether any of the injured were still in the hospital. Turk said the investigation has determined that the shooting began from an elevated area in a yard neighboring the house where the party was happening.
