‘I tried fish and chips from the North and South and there's one clear winner'

A couple decided to put the North and South parts of England against each other as they determine which part of the country has the best fish and chips - and the results surprised them
It's a question that has divided the English for years – who has the best fish and chips? Travel creators Ryan and Jade wanted to settle the debate once and for all. So they decided to put the North and the South against each other in a fish and chip cook off.
"Which is best? Fish and chips in the North or fish and chips in the South? Let's find out," Ryan said in a TikTok video. Then the pair went to work, comparing offerings from various locations. Starting off with northern England, they picked a The Magpie Café in Whitby.

They had high hopes – as they'd been told it's the home to 'the best' fish and chips in the North. They understood the hype – but were still surprised to see a long line of people waiting for their food outside.

Thankfully, this didn't scare them off. They just started a timer when joining the queue to see just how long it'd take for them to get their food. The video soon cut to them ordering inside the chippy.
"It took 37 minutes to get hold of these fish and chips," Jade later revealed. She added that their portion had cost £11.95 for battered cod and chips.
They moved down to the beach to enjoy their food, saying it always tastes better with a view. Then it was time to dig into their meal, which they smothered with gravy, curry sauce, and mushy peas on the side.
"It's crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside," Ryan said. "I don't know if the Southern chip shop's even gonna sell gravy."
Jade then added: "Mm these are so good... If the South are gonna beat this, they're gonna have to put on a good show."

Ryan gave Magpie Cafe's fish and chips a score of 8.9 out of ten, arguing that the fish could have been 'a bit' better. So how would the second takeaway measure up?
In a second video, the pair revealed that, by suggestions from their viewers, they ended up at Forum Fryer in the unassuming Blandford Forum in Dorset.

As they got their meal, Ryan said the same order of battered cod and chips had cost them £10.90, making it more affordable than the other option.
They also didn't have to queue for their meal as they had to do in Whitby. Taking a bite out of the fish, Ryan said: "Mm, considering we are no way near the sea, the fish is exquisite."
"The consistency and texture of that doesn't feel great," Jade said as she poured a generous helping of gravy onto her fish.

However, she then changed her mind as she said: "I take it back, it tastes good. Very good. Sublime." But which part of the country provided the best fish and chips?
Ryan revealed the all-important results – and they are bound to upset half the country. He added: "After our scientific experiment, the winner is unexpected. Hopefully you agree the clear winner was the South."
Judging by the comments section, the debate remains as divisive as ever. One viewer smugly wrote: "South is just better at everything."
However, another commenter disagreed. They said: "As a Southerner living in the North, the North does fish and chips better."

Inside world's ‘creepiest' island with 160,000 abandoned corpses where tourists are BANNED from stepping foot

The island had a significant purpose during the eighteenth century OFF LIMITS Inside world's 'creepiest' island with 160,000 abandoned corpses where tourists are BANNED from stepping foot Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE world's most creepy island is littered with hundreds of thousands of abandoned corpses and intrepid travellers are barred from entering. Poveglia sits just off the coast of Venice and is comprised of three small areas, each as creepy as the last. And it is because of those unstable buildings that tourists are banned from setting foot on the spine-tingling patch of land. Rare exceptions are made for official reasons, such as research or filming. The reason for the island's spooky reputation is what is was used for in centuries past. In the 18th century, Poveglia was used as a quarantine station during outbreaks of the plague. People were dragged kicking and screaming to the island if they showed even the slightest symptoms of the Black Death, according to local tales. The 18-acre plot was also used as a mass burial ground, where some 160,000 victims are thought to have been burned to stop the spread of the disease. It has been said that even to this day, human ash from these cremations make up more than 50 per cent of the island's soil. British urban explorers Matt Nadin, 40, and Andy Thompson, 54, filmed themselves visiting areas of the island that have been left untouched for decades in 2020. Then duo posted the footage to their YouTube channel, Finders Beepers History Seekers, where they can often be found exploring abandoned and historic places of interest. English seaside town to transform abandoned beach shelters into new attraction Matt said: "It was really, really eerie. "You could tell even the taxi driver was scared, not just of the police but of the place itself, he couldn't get away quick enough. "The island is so full of dark, dark history, a hell of a lot of people died there and you really get a sense of the horrors that took place there while you're walking around. "They burnt all the bodies and left them where they lay. The island has never really been cleared properly or anything so everything has just been left. "Later on, when it was turned into an asylum, and because people were shoved there out of the way of prying eyes, they started to do experiments on them, horrible, horrible stuff. "Whilst we were there, we heard the bell toll and that was quite spooky, that did actually freak me out a little bit. It was like an omen or something. "The whole place was just really weird and eerie although you could tell from the tiles and the archways it would have been a beautiful building originally. "You could see that hardly anyone had set foot there for years because there is no graffiti or anything it's all just natural decay. "Nature has really taken over and it was really typical of a horror movie with all the vines and creepers. "Definitely an experience I won't forget in a hurry." 5 A Venetian geriatric hospital Credit: Getty

'Harry's Father's Day tribute from Meghan speaks volumes on compromised life'

Meghan Markle posted a Father's Day tribute to Prince Harry with never-before-seen footage of him with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet - and one royal expert says the post is very telling Prince Harry's Father's Day tribute from Meghan Markle shows he "doesn't have it all" despite the song it is set to, according to a royal expert. Meghan posted a video to Instagram showing Harry alongside Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, set to the song Have It All by Jason Mraz. The compilation showed photos and videos of Harry laughing, dancing and spending quality time with his children through the years. Meghan captioned the post: "The best. Happy Father's Day to our favourite guy." The post came hours after Harry's estranged brother Prince William was also seen in a new picture with his children in a post on the official Prince and Princess of Wales social media accounts. ‌ ‌ Kensington Palace said the photographs were taken by professional photographer Josh Shinner in Norfolk earlier this year. And according to royal expert and historian Dr Tessa Dunlop, there was a vast gulf between the two posts. She told the Mirror: "Hail Prince William, the model father. Or rather the model English father, with a before-and-after duo of professional photographs featuring a handsome, upstanding man, beautifully blended with his children; a foursome united in different shades of 'Norfolk' green. "The post dropped early on Father's Day via Kensington Palace's Instagram account, giving that other royal family plenty of time to tweak their own paternal efforts for a later LA release. "In Britain, it was bedtime before we caught a sneaky peak of the Sussexes' alternative Californian vibe: Harry the hands-on dad - forget formal posing in tweedy greens, this was 'au naturel'. Well, sort of. "A hotch-potch of sunbaked vibes, bubble machines and sea-side shots cast to the Jason Mraz track 'Have it all.' Except Harry doesn't have it all." ‌ The tribute to Harry comes just weeks after he spoke out about his rift with his own father King Charles, and said he would love reconciliation with him. And Tessa added: "Despite his professed desire to resume relations with his own father the King, the Duke of Sussex remains something of an orphan, stranded on the other side of the Atlantic. A discordant backdrop that cast his otherwise happy little video in a poignant light. ‌ "Poor Harry. These days having it all even means sharing images of his children's faces, albeit blurry ones taken when they were much younger. "Such are the compromises celebrities make when no longer protected by the royal coffers. Meghan's Instagram account is a hungry beast. ‌ "Long gone are the effortless days of a shared fraternal photograph; it was 2017 when William and Harry posted an early photograph with their dear Papa in the Scottish Highlands for Father's Day. "It had been declared the holiday snap indicative of the brothers' close bond, proof that when it comes to the Royal Family, what you see is only ever half the story." Tessa Dunlop is the author of the new book Lest We Forget, War and Peace in 100 British Monuments.

'I got Turkey teeth that will last 10 years – cruel trolls say I've ruined my life'

'I got Turkey teeth that will last 10 years – cruel trolls say I've ruined my life' Lottie Carr, 24, flew more than 2,600 miles to Turkey to undergo a teeth transformation but after sharing her journey online she was told she's 'ruined her life' A woman has spoken about her experience of travelling 2,600 miles for a dental transformation despite knowing the results would last just a decade. Lottie Carr, 24, had her heart set on a gleaming new smile to address chips, cracks, discolouration and alignment problems. ‌ Despite being thrilled with her new teeth Lottie's online reveal has led to an unexpected onslaught of criticism. Her TikTok went viral, amassing more than 28.9m views and 1.6m likes. Stay informed on the latest health news by signing up to . ‌ Speaking to NeedToKnow Lottie, from north Wales, expressed her shock at the reaction. "I knew the video of myself with shaved-down teeth would likely invoke some kind of response as it was so outrageous but I did not expect the video to have international reach and receive the amount of negativity that it did. "I was told to kill myself, that I've ruined my life, that I am still ugly after the procedure, and that I'm a bad influence to young and impressionable viewers. "I don't think a lot of people share the 'during' phase of this procedure online so [people] don't actually see what is done to create the 'perfect Hollywood smile'. Article continues below Lottie flew more than 2,600 miles for the treatment despite being aware that her new teeth would only last 10 years (Image: Jam Press/@lottie_victoria ) "I didn't really have any major concerns with my teeth until very recently." Revealing her motivation Lottie said: "I had chips, cracks, staining, and alignment issues and just wanted the perfect smile." ‌ The cost comparison between countries was stark. While UK practices quoted Lottie £9,900 for crown veneers her final bill in Turkey was around £4,000. In 2023 the Turkish Dental Association estimated that 250,000 people travel to Turkey each year for dental treatment Lottie detailed the procedure, saying: "I had 10 crowns on the top and 10 crowns on the bottom. ‌ "There was also a possibility that I was going to need three root canals but they managed to avoid this on the day luckily. "My teeth were all shaved down and reshaped to enable the crowns to slot over the top to ensure they seal properly. Despite being overjoyed with the results, after sharing her journey online, Lottie has said she has been receiving a barrage of abuse (Image: Jam Press/@lottie_victoria ) ‌ "It was uncomfortable but not painful in the slightest as I was injected with anaesthetic. I did not feel any sensitivity and it was virtually a pain-free process. "I was at the dentist for four days in a row but only a few hours each day. "I do get a lot of anxiety that I'm going to lose one, or stain one, or that I'm going to suffer with sudden pain etc – but it has only been a few weeks since the procedure so it is something I need to get used to. ‌ "I am so happy with the results. In person I have had 100% positive reactions." Lottie, who describes herself as a "very spontaneous person", made the decision to have her teeth done just a few months earlier. Despite being aware that she may need to have the procedure done again after a decade she also considered it not to be an issue. ‌ She said: "I started looking at some TikToks of the procedure before I flew out and seeing other people's teeth shaved down started to make me feel nervous – I'd not seen it before. "[But] I think life is short and we should be able to do whatever we want with our own bodies providing it is safe. Lottie had the treatment in Turkey (Image: Jam Press/@lottie_victoria ) ‌ "I made sure that the clinic I chose uses high-quality materials and that the dentist is properly trained, licensed, and experienced. "I am aware of the longevity of porcelain crowns and am aware I will need to go back in 10 years time – but I live in the now and I'd rather have a big beautiful smile now rather than live my whole life with my teeth in the condition they were in. "To achieve the look I wanted this was my option." ‌ But Lottie felt "overwhelmed" by the response her video had garnered. She is now choosing to concentrate on the positive feedback and ignore the trolls. Lottie's teeth during the treatment (Image: Jam Press/@lottie_victoria ) ‌ She continued: "To have that many people see you in the most vulnerable state you've ever been in, and to have them all comment on it, it's really not for the faint-hearted. "But now that I have seen the results and am so happy with my teeth I am able to brush off the comments. "It has definitely made me a lot more aware of the risks and dangers with this type of procedure abroad though." ‌ Lottie was quoted £9,900 for her crown veneers in the UK (Image: Jam Press/@lottie_victoria ) On the NHS website it is recommended that those seeking treatment abroad should follow a checklist. "All types of medical treatment involve some element of risk," it reads. Article continues below "It's important to get as much information as possible about your treatment options so that you can make informed choices." The NHS encourages people to think about their reasons for going abroad and to know the warning signs, get a second opinion, do research, consider the possible side effects and complications, and more which you can find out more here.
