Aiden Markram helps South Africa beat Australia in World Test Championship final
Set 282 to win, 70 more than had been scored in any of the first three innings at Lord's, Markram and captain Temba Bavuma put on 147 to break the back of the chase.
Bavuma fell early on Saturday morning for 66 and, though Markram was dismissed six runs short of the victory target, his 136 was the crucial innings and allowed David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne to finish the job.
It ends a series of agonising near misses for the five-time World Cup semi-finalists and 2024 T20 World Cup runners-up and marks the Proteas' first global trophy since 1998, when they won the Wills International Cup – the precursor to the Champions Trophy – and the Commonwealth Games.

Veteran James O'Connor has been called on to take on the playmaking duties as the Wallabies seek to build on the impetus of their third Test win over the Lions with a rare victory in South Africa at the start of the Rugby Championship. The inclusion of the 35-year-old O'Connor at fly-half is the only change to the starting XV that defeated the British & Irish Lions 22-12 in Sydney a fortnight ago, as he comes into the side after Tom Lynagh suffered a concussion in that encouraging victory. O'Connor, who helped New Zealand's Crusaders win the Super Rugby title this season, hasn't played for the Wallabies since 2022. But he still looks the safest pair of hands after all the fly-half woes Schmidt has had to contend withfollowing the loss of first choice Noah Lolesio with neck trouble. O'Connor's halfback partner will be another veteran, White, who has doubled back on his decision to retire after the Lions series when first choice Jake Gordon got injured.
