Mumbai: A 34-year-old man was arrested by Customs officials at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for trying to smuggle 16 exotic snakes into the country. The man was identified as Goodman Linford Leo, from Chennai. Passenger arrested with 16 exotic snakes at Mumbai airport
Customs staff intercepted the flyer after he arrived in the city from Bangkok on Friday night, according to officials.The passenger's baggage had cotton bags stuffed with 16 live snakes, including two Kenyan sand boas, five rhinoceros rat snakes, three albino snakes, two Honduran milk snakes, one California kingsnake, two garter snakes, and one albino rat snake, officials said.
The accused was booked under the Customs Act for smuggling exotic animals illegally. Preliminary investigations suggest he's part of a larger wildlife trafficking syndicate, which is under investigation.
The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau and Customs are working to send back the reptiles to the source country as per the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, said an official.Experts from Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare helped in the handling and identification of the snakes, the official added.

With slash in import duty, gold smuggling at RGIA falls by 70%
Hyderabad: Gold smuggling at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has seen a sharp decline following a reduction in import duty from 15% to 6% last year and heightened surveillance. According to data obtained through an RTI application filed by TOI with the customs department, gold seizures decreased by 68%, from 132.4 kg in 2023-24 to 42.5 kg in 2024-25. The worth of gold seized at RGIA during 2024-25 is Rs 32.11 crore. On the other hand, cigarette seizures experienced a threefold increase, rising from 54 cases in 2023-24 to 175 cases in 2024-25. The RTI data shows that in the previous fiscal, authorities apprehended 133 flyers involved in gold smuggling, down from 240 in 2023. Whenever a passenger is caught smuggling goods, including gold, the case is investigated and a showcause notice is issued under section 124 of the Customs Act, 1962, says the RTI reply. During screening, authorities have also discovered gold hidden in passengers' rectums. In one incident reported on June 25, 2024, RGIA customs officials seized 806 gm of gold worth Rs 58.8 lakh from a passenger arriving from Abu Dhabi, who had hidden it inside his rectum. The current market rate for 24-carat gold in Hyderabad stands at approximately Rs 1 crore per kg, indicating that a smuggler can potentially gain Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh per kg of gold. Usually, gold is cheaper by 5% to 7% in countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar. Under customs regulations, passengers can carry gold, including jewellery, up to a maximum limit of 1 kg in their baggage. Mumbai: Man attempts to declare package as ‘Confidential Diplomatic Cargo', arrested for smuggling weed
The customs department officials have arrested an air passenger on Sunday at the Mumbai Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport while trying to smuggle 14.738 Kilograms of Hydroponic Weed having an illicit market value of approximately Rs 14.73 crore. The accused passenger had smuggled the narcotics contraband from Bangkok. On the basis of specific intel, the Customs officers on Sunday intercepted a passenger arriving from Bangkok by flight number MH194. During the examination of the baggage, the Customs officers recovered 14.738 kg of suspected Hydroponic Weed (Marijuana), worth approximately Rs 14.738 crore. 'The accused was attempting to smuggle marijuana by falsely declaring it as Confidential Diplomatic Cargo linked to national security,' the customs officials stated. The contraband was concealed inside envelopes bearing Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) markings and sealed with official MEA tape, the customs officials added. The bag also contained copies of various UNODC reports and fake 'Top Secret Mission Reports' and these were kept inside the trolley bag carried by the passengers, the baggage examination revealed. The passenger was arrested under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The customs department is now investigating roles of other associates of the accused person and also checking if the person similarly smuggled narcotics in the past.
