Crunchyroll Anime Awards: ‘Solo Leveling,' ‘Look Back' Big Winners at Star-Studded Tokyo Ceremony

Solo Leveling was the big winner Sunday night at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, taking home anime of the year, best action, best new series, and multiple performance and music honors in a starry ceremony that brought together anime's most passionate global fans. Held at the Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa in Tokyo, the annual celebration honored the top talent in Japanese animation across 28 categories — drawing a record-breaking 51 million fan votes worldwide to decide the winners.
In the feature film category, Look Back, the emotional adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's one-shot manga, earned Film of the Year, while fan-favorite Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba added to its legacy with best continuing series and best animation. The genre-defying Dan Da Dan picked up several creative awards, including best opening sequence, best anime song, and best character design.

Hosted for the third year in a row by voice actress Sally Amaki and entertainer Jon Kabira, this year's show again welcomed a diverse slate of celebrity presenters, further underlining anime's global appeal. Appearances were made by Grammy winner Kacey Musgraves, Stranger Things stars Finn Wolfhard and Gaten Matarazzo, Latin music icon J Balvin, Japanese actor Kanata Hongo and Japanese Academy Award-winner Mayu Matsuoka. Also on hand were singer Rina Sawayama, Brazilian pop star Pabllo Vittar, model Saya Ichikawa, actor Dean Fujioka and Damiano David of Maneskin fame.
The night's most poignant moment came when Attack on Titan was awarded Crunchyroll's first-ever Global Impact Award, a new honor recognizing a franchise's profound influence on anime and global pop culture. Director Yuichiro Hayashi accepted the award on behalf of studio Mappa and the series' many creators, following the release of Attack on Titan: The Last Attack in late 2024, which concluded the long-running saga.
Fans were also treated to live performances from some of anime music's biggest acts, including Creepy Nuts with their viral hit 'Bling-Bang-Bang-Born' from Mashle: Magic and Muscles, Japanese rock legends Flow with 'Days' in honor of Eureka Seven, and a three-song medley by J-pop star Lisa, including her Demon Slayer anthem 'Gurenge.'
'Fans form deep emotional connections to anime. These are not just series, films or songs, but rather works of art that help define the identity of anime fans,' said Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll. 'With an incredible 51 million votes this year, the 2025 Anime Awards are celebrating the creators in Japan who have captured the hearts of fans and are powering anime's prominence in global pop culture.'
Crunchyroll partnered with Sony Music Solutions Inc. and Dempsey Productions to deliver the high-energy show, which will be available to stream via Crunchyroll's YouTube and Twitch channels, as well as Sony Pictures Core and other Sony Group platforms.
Sony Group has identified anime as a key pillar of its growth strategy, with Crunchyroll sitting at the center of its holdings in the sector. On Sony's most recent earnings call in May, the conglomerate revealed that Crunchyroll now counts 17 million subscribers worldwide. Crunchyroll, Aniplex and Sony Pictures will collaborate later this year on the North American and international release of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, a trilogy of films that concludes what is currently the world's most bankable anime franchise. Crunchyroll and Aniplex are also co-producing an anime series based on the blockbuster samurai adventure PlayStation game Ghost of Tsushima.

YouTube siphons up to 45% of ad revenue; Spotify pays artists less than a penny per stream; TikTok's algorithm can bury a post without warning. The creator economy, valued at over $250 billion and projected to hit $480 billion by 2027, is booming, but most creators are barely scraping by. A revolution is brewing, and it's called the Web3 AI Creative Economy. A handful of platforms are blending blockchain's transparency with artificial intelligence (AI)'s creative spark to give creators control, ownership and new ways to thrive. This isn't a tech fad, it's a rebellion against a broken system. Imagine a filmmaker in Mumbai using AI to edit a short film, minting it as an NFT and selling it directly to fans in New York, all while earning tokens for engaging their community. Or a gamer in Tokyo crafting an AI-driven character, selling it on a blockchain marketplace and bypassing corporate gatekeepers. The Web3 AI Creative Economy is a world where creators own their work, set their terms and connect with audiences directly. It's a bold challenge to the platforms that have long exploited creators, and it's gaining ground fast. The platforms in this space combine AI tools for content creation with tokenized economies for direct monetization and gamified features like quests to boost fan engagement. A creator can use AI to generate a podcast episode and sell exclusive access via tokens and reward loyal fans with digital badges all within a multi-platform ecosystem that spans web, mobile and apps, showing how decentralized technology can be user-friendly. The problem of intellectual property management in AI-based systems is also addressed. The ownership of AI-generated art and music remains unclear, but Web3 platforms enable creators to tokenize their IP, which allows them to receive credit and payment when their work is used. Many Web2 platforms fail to provide fair terms, but smart contracts in Web3 platforms help ensure musicians and writers receive their due compensation. Although the Web3 economy is still in its early days, some disruptive projects have already emerged and provide a great example of how revolutionary this industry is about to become and how it may change the way we all create content in the new digital era, powered by machine learning and artificial intelligence. For example, some platforms help resolve IP problems in AI-generated content through Layer 1 blockchain tokenization, providing automated contracts for creator credit and payment, something that is largely absent in Web2. Some allow users to create content with AI while allowing token-based monetization and fan engagement through gamified badges within a user-friendly decentralized system. One platform enables nontechnical creators to build virtual influencers and chatbots via a no-code studio. Another offers on-chain AI agents that enable virtual world transactions that generate revenue from tokenized characters and assets through basic Base L2 wallet connections. And another gives users a way to create interactive AI personas from text prompts and earn money from their dynamic digital assets through a token system, uniting creative freedom with blockchain stability. This fusion of Web3 and AI addresses real creator pain points. Centralized platforms thrive on control: They hoard data, tweak algorithms and keep creators on a leash. Web3's blockchain offers transparency and ownership, letting creators call the shots. AI amplifies this, automating tasks like editing or analytics while unlocking new creative possibilities. Together, they enable a filmmaker to crowdfund via tokens, a gamer to sell an AI-crafted item or an artist to license work globally with a smart contract, all without a middleman. But revolutions face hurdles. Decentralized systems can lag, and gas fees on some blockchains sting. Some platforms use Layer 2 solutions to cut costs, but the experience needs to match Web2's ease to go mainstream. Regulation is a wild card; governments are still navigating tokenized assets and AI content. Platforms with an IP focus help, but legal clarity is pending. Competition is also fierce: The AI-blockchain market could hit $703 million by 2025, drawing new players. Still, the momentum is unstoppable. Creators are done being pawns. This isn't a crypto niche, it's a global shift. The Web3 AI Creative Economy is here, and it's time to join the rebellion and support a fairer digital world where creativity rules and content returns as king. Staffers at The Washington Post are on a sugar high — but not in the way their bosses may have hoped. Glenn Kessler, The Post's famed Fact Checker, announced his departure last week after more than 27 years at the paper, revealing he had taken a buyout. His last day was July 31. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Kessler revealed that his final days at The Post weren't too somber — thanks to all the "caking." "It was sugar overload because, you know, the tradition in newspapers is what we call caking, where it is a little celebration with cake served," Kessler told Fox News Digital. Kessler said his colleagues held a "very nice event" for him and shared kind words, including some located in Asia who woke up in the middle of the night and were "beamed in" on Zoom to participate. Kessler previously served as a State Department reporter before becoming the Fact Checker. However, he was far from the only outgoing "Postie" being celebrated. "But it was literally one caking after another," Kessler said. "I mean, as we walked in for my event, they were packing up the leftover cake from the previous event. And as my wife remarked, as we walked through the newsroom to the place where they were holding my event, there was literally every conference room was filled with a caking, with people celebrating people who were leaving. So it was a very strange sugar high one got on your last day." Kessler let out a belly laugh at the idea that The Post was giving so much business to one lucky bakery in Washington, D.C., as he speculated all the cakes were coming from the same bakery, though he didn't know which one. "But the caking is such a newspaper cliché," Kessler said. "I mean, one of my favorite movies is the movie 'Spotlight,' which is about The Boston Globe, and it opens with a caking. It was kind of like an inside journalism joke to open with a caking where people were eating this cake and they each have kind of awkward, strange, funny remarks that people make about the person that's leaving." "So that was the last day. Caking, after caking, after caking, after caking," he added. The Washington Post had just concluded a round of buyouts, targeting the most senior staffers. The Post, which has struggled financially in recent years, has had multiple iterations of what it calls the Voluntary Separation Program (VSP). But as Kessler noted in his Substack piece shedding light on what led to his departure, this was going to be the "last buyout," according to what a senior editor told him, and that any necessary staff reductions in the future would be layoffs. But not everyone who has left The Post in recent months was for a buyout. Many landed jobs at other news outlets while others resigned in protest over decisions made by the paper's billionaire owner, Jeff Bezos. Bezos sparked newsroom turmoil last October when he pulled The Post's forthcoming endorsement of then-Vice President Kamala Harris just days before the presidential election. He fueled further consternation in February by launching a new mission for the editorial pages to promote "personal liberties and free markets" and vowing not to publish pieces opposing those principles. The Post has lost a significant portion of its biggest talent and high-profile journalists over the past year, Kessler being among them. However, some departures were more painful for the newsroom. Kessler cited a trio of top editors who announced their exits within a two-month span that took the biggest hit on newsroom morale; Matea Gold, The Post's managing editor who was poached by The New York Times to become its Washington editor, Philip Rucker, The Post's national editor who joined CNN as its senior vice president of editorial strategy and news, and Griff Witte, The Post's democracy editor who became The Atlantic's managing editor. Gold, in particular, Kessler noted, was the one who "everyone thought should have been editor" of The Post. "Those three were the future leaders of The Washington Post," Kessler said. "You could imagine any one of them running the newspaper at one point. And the fact that they all left? That was devastating." A spokesperson for The Washington Post declined to comment.
