5 Players From England Series Who Are Unlikely To Be Picked For West Indies Tests
Last Updated: The Indian men's cricket team will face West Indies in a two-match Test series in October. The series opener will be played in Ahmedabad, and the 2nd Test is scheduled in Delhi. Following the conclusion of the five-match Test series against the English team, which ended in a 2-2 draw on Monday (August 4) at The Oval in London, Indian Test players will be on a break for a couple of months, as India's next red-ball series is scheduled to take place in October 2025. In October, the Indian team will face the West Indies team in a two-match Test series at home. The series opener will be played from October 2 to 6 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium will host the second match from October 10 to 14. A total of 21 players were part of India's squad (full members + injury replacements) for the England tour, and of those 21 players, 16 got a chance to play at least one match in the series. While the majority of them managed to impress with their performance in the series against England, a few of them failed to live up to the mark, and as a result, they could be dropped from the Indian team for the home series against the West Indies. Here's a look at five players from the England series who are unlikely to be picked for the two-match Test series against the West Indies: Shardul Thakur: Thakur was picked in the Indian team for the England tour due to his super all-round show in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season for Mumbai. But in the two Tests he played against the English team, Thakur was only able to take two wickets and score 46 runs with the bat. Thakur's flop show with the ball was the reason he was twice dropped from the playing XI in England, and there are high chances that he won't be considered for the home series in October. Anshul Kamboj: Kamboj joined Team India as an injury replacement for Nitish Kumar Reddy, and he made his Test debut in Manchester during the fourth Test. But in his maiden international match for the Indian team, the Haryana-based cricketer was only able to take one wicket in 18 overs and conceded 89 runs. He even faced criticism for his bowling speed, which dropped down to the 120s. Nitish Kumar Reddy: Nitish Kumar Reddy suffered a knee injury ahead of the fourth Test, and due to that, he was ruled out of the last two matches. In the two matches that he got a chance to play against the English team, Reddy failed to impress with his batting. Due to the uncertainty over his fitness, there are not many chances of him getting picked, and even if he is available, his recent performances, which also include IPL 2025, don't look good, and he might lose his place in the Test team. Arshdeep Singh: Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was picked in India's Test squad for the first time in his career for the England series, but he didn't get a chance to play any matches there. And since he didn't get a chance to play in England, where conditions would have favoured him, there are almost negligible chances of him getting a go in the home series. Also, keeping India's jam-packed white-ball season ahead in mind, selectors won't increase Arshdeep's workload by including him in the Test series against the West Indies as well. Narayan Jagadeesan: Narayan Jagadeesan was added to India's squad for the fifth Test against England as a replacement for Rishabh Pant. Pant is India's first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in Tests, and since he is expected to get fit in time for the West Indies series, Jagadeesan will have to make way, as Dhruv Jurel is already India's backup wicketkeeper. (Photo: IANS) Team India captain Shubman Gill has smashed multiple records in the five-match Test series against England which concluded at the Oval in London on Monday. Gill, leading India for the first time in Test cricket, won the fifth Test by six runs to level the series 2-2 with Ben Stokes-led England. Gill notched up 754 runs in the series against England with four centuries, including a double ton at 75.40 to break legendary Sunil Gavaskar's record (732) for the highest run tally for an Indian captain in a five-Test series. The new Indian skipper's returns are now also the second-best behind Sir Donald Bradman (810 runs) in the all-time list for captains. For these massive achievements in the Test series, Gill has been nominated for ICC Player of the Month Award for the month of July 2025. 'Shubman Gill had a sensational month, amassing 567 runs at an impeccable average of 94.50 in three Tests during India's gripping series in England,' the ICC wrote on their website. 'He played a starring role in India's record-breaking win at Edgbaston, where he scored a monumental 269 in the first innings followed by 161 in the second. His combined 430 runs across the two innings is the second highest tally, next only to Graham Gooch's 456,' it added. Shubman Gill has taken the 'baton' from Virat Kohli The ICC said that Gill carried the baton from 'all-time great' Virat Kohli at No. 4 for Team India. Gill's double ton and century in the second innings were instrumental in Team India winning the second Test at Edgbaston. The Indian captain also scored a century in the fourth Test at Manchester to help his side bat through most of last two days of the game to draw the clash. 'His consistency at No. 4, carrying on the baton from all-time great Virat Kohli, provided stability and flair in equal measure, and combined with his extraordinary captaincy in his debut series,' ICC said. Shubman Gill vs Wiaan Mulder for ICC award In his maiden outing as South Africa captain, South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder struck a mammoth 367 not out against Zimbabwe but declared his team's innings when he could have broken legendary Brian Lara's record for highest individual total of 400 not out against England in 2004. 'He scored 531 runs across the two matches at an astonishing average of 265.50, including a composed 147 in the second innings of the first Test,' the ICC said. 'However, his standout act came in the second Test at Bulawayo, where he smashed an unbeaten 367 in his maiden outing as South Africa's Test skipper — the highest individual score in South African Test history. 'Mulder also chipped in with the ball, claiming seven wickets at just 15.28 apiece, including a four-wicket haul in the first Test,' the ICC release added. The ICC lauded Stokes for his all-round show against India saying, 'He scored 251 runs at an average of 50.20 and took 12 wickets at 26.33, delivering in high-pressure situations with both bat and ball. 'His leadership proved crucial in maintaining England's intensity and belief in a closely contested series. With ball in hand, he bowled long spells, often breaking key partnerships and turning the tide in England's favour,' it added.
