Minor among four held for tossing ‘ganja balls' into Goa jail

Police have arrested three men and detained a minor boy for allegedly throwing ganja rolled into balls in the premises of the high-security Central Jail in North Goa district, officials said. Minor, four others caught hurling 'ganja balls' into Goa central prison(Representative image/HT Photo)
Security guards at the jail, located in Colvale area, on Tuesday found seven balls containing 1.397 gm of the contraband, valued at ₹ 1.4 lakh, in the premises, Superintendent of Police (North) Rahul Gupta told reporters on Wednesday.
The balls were found were lying in a passage area of the inner corridor between two watch towers, he said.
An investigation indicated that four persons, including a minor boy, threw the 'ganja balls' in the jail premises from outside the compound wall in the wee hours of Tuesday, he said.
The police have arrested Gautam Talwar, Samuel Pujari and Jaffer Mulla, all from Mapusa town in North Goa, and apprehended the juvenile in this connection, the official said.
The accused have been booked under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the police added.

3 minors rescued in drive to curb child begging in Mohali
Three children were rescued in a special drive to curb the menace of child begging in Mohali, officials said on Thursday. After a verification of their documents and identity, the children were handed over to their respective parents, District Child Protection Officer Navpreet Kaur said, adding that the parents were issued a strict warning that any such act in the future would invite legal consequences. District Child Protection Officer further highlighted that engaging children in begging is a punishable offence under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which provides for the care, protection, treatment, and rehabilitation of children in need. As per the Act, any individual who employs or uses a child for begging can face imprisonment and/or fine. The Act aims to create a secure environment for children and ensure their rights are upheld. Vineet Verma, member, Punjab State Traders' Commission, on whose initiative the drive was conducted, also pressed upon the need of such continuous raids as public is often harassed in the market due to this menace besides the exploitation of children. He praised the action taken by the district officials. Kulwant Singh Guru, chairman of a child welfare committee, emphasised that forcing the minors selling articles also comes under the definition of begging. He stressed upon discouraging the public to give alms to children and purchasing articles from them as this encourages the families to make their children send on roads to beg and sell articles. Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal emphasised that protection of child rights is a top priority for the administration, and such drives will continue in the future to ensure the safety and welfare of children. The district administration also appealed to the public to report any such cases immediately so that timely intervention can be ensured.

Minor girl kidnapped, sexually abused by youth in Krishna district
A 15-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and sexually abused in Krishna district. The victim is a Class IX student of a government school in Pamarru mandal of the district. The accused, Naveen, a native of Anantapur district, allegedly befriended the girl, took her to different locations in Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Vijayawada and Anantapur and raped her under threat. Following a complaint lodged by the victim's parents, the Pamarru police registered a case and rescued the girl from Anantapur on Tuesday. However, the accused managed to escape. 'The girl, who was produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), alleged that the accused pretended love, took her to hotels and Manginapudi beach by force, and threatened to commit suicide if she did not fulfil his desire,' said Krishna district CWC Member Chandragiri Radha Kumari. The victim revealed that Naveen, who came to his sister's house a few days ago, befriended her at the school, and that he took her to a lodge in Vijayawada, and to an isolated place near Manginapudi beach and raped her repeatedly, Ms. Radha Kumari told The Hindu on Thursday. 'With the girl's parents refusing to allow her into their home, she was provided protection in an NGO home,' the CWC Member said. Pamarru Circle Inspector V. Subhakar said that a case under Section 64 (2) and Section 65 (1) (raping a girl below 16 years of age) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, has been registered. 'The CWC provided shelter to the victim in an NGO home, and she will be sent to a government hospital for medical examination. The accused will be arrested soon,' the CI said.

Bungalow, farmhouse of man accused in ‘107 cases' razed in latest demolition drive in Junagadh
Junagadh district police on Thursday razed illegal properties, including a sprawling bungalow and a farmhouse, of an accused allegedly involved in '107 cases', according to a statement quoting the Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi. Calling the action a part of the state's ongoing 'campaign' against 'anti-social elements', Sanghavi said, 'Today, a bulldozer was rolled over the luxurious bungalow of Kara Rabari of Junagadh, who was involved in 107 crimes, and his luxurious farm house, and the illegal encroachments were demolished and the government land was freed, so that it can be used for the well-being of the citizens.' Kara Devrajbhai Rada Rabari, 50, according to the release, was involved in four murders, three attempted murder cases, besides cases of kidnapping. His gang has been booked under the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime (GUJCTOC) Act, the release added. 'This accused had illegally constructed a luxurious bungalow on a 750-square meter area in Survey No 308 at Lirbaipara in Junagadh, and a farmhouse on a 35,000 square meter area in Survey No 397 near Kendriya Vidyalaya, which was demolished today (Thursday) by the team of Junagadh Superintendent of Police Shri Subodh Odedara with the help of the administration,' the statement said.
