China, Pakistan reaffirm peace-focused defence ties

China is willing to share the achievements of its equipment development with friendly countries, including Pakistan, said Chinese Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Jiang Bin.
In response to media reports that the Pakistani military has inducted the Chinese-made Z-10ME attack helicopter to advance the modernization of its defense equipment, he said that China-Pakistan defense and security cooperation was not aimed at any third party and was committed to maintaining international and regional security and stability.
The Pakistan Army has inducted China's export-oriented Z-10ME attack helicopter. A Chinese expert said that this would mark the first export deal of the Z-10, and the helicopter's strong firepower and survivability could boost Pakistan's defense capabilities, especially in the field of anti-terrorism.
Zhang Xuefeng, a Chinese military affairs expert, told the Global Times that compared with the baseline version of the Z-10, the Z-10ME was customized with additional armor plates, warning sensors and jamming systems, which can boost the aircraft's survivability.

China, HK stocks edge higher ahead of tariff deadline

HONG KONG: China and Hong Kong stocks rose on Monday as investors focussed on US-China trade truce developments, while shrugging off weekend data that highlighted persistent deflationary pressures in the world's second-largest economy. At market close, the Shanghai Composite index rose 0.3 percent to 3,647.55, the highest such close since Dec 16, 2021. The blue-chip CSI300 index was up 0.4 percent. Market participants widely expect another extension of the August 12 trade truce deadline following earlier talks in Stockholm. Analysts at Caitong Securities said in a note that the trade negotiations will likely result in an extension of reciprocal tariffs, and until US President Donald Trump's potential visit to China, the impact of US-China relations on A-shares could remain limited. However, fresh data showed factory-gate prices falling more than forecast as deflationary pressures persist across the Chinese economy, weighing on the sentiment. Leading gains onshore on Monday, the liquor sector jumped 2.5 percent, and AI-related stocks added 1.8 percent. Shares of lithium maker Tianqi and Ganfeng surged to near the 10 percent daily trading limits, after battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) said it had suspended production at a major lithium mine. In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index was up 0.2 percent at 24,906.81. The Tech index was flat, while Hang Seng Automobile Index rallied 1.9 percent. Investors are also awaiting earnings reports from market heavyweights later this week, including Tencent Meituan, and Alibaba. Around the region, MSCI's Asia ex-Japan stock index was firmer by 0.30 percent while Japan's Nikkei index was up 1.9 percent.

Copper prices fall as supply concerns ease

LONDON: Copper prices fell on Monday as Chile allowed mining to resume at Codelco's El Teniente mine and the dollar strengthened, while the market awaited more clues on the path of interest rates. Benchmark three-month LME copper on the London Metal Exchange was down 0.4% at $9,722 a metric ton in official open-outcry trading. The contract rose 1.4% last week. Easing concerns on the supply side, Codelco said on Saturday that Chile's state regulators had approved the reopening of those parts of the El Teniente mine not affected by the July 31 collapse that killed six workers. On the consumption front, Chinese producer prices fell more than expected in July while consumer prices were unchanged, highlighting sluggish domestic demand. There are hopes that demand from China, the world's top metals consumer, would improve in September, usually a peak season, and that Beijing and Washington would again extend their deadline to reach a trade deal. The metals market was broadly quiet, waiting for a US inflation report this week that could help to determine whether the Federal Reserve lowers borrowing costs next month, one trader said. Lower interest rates improve prospects for economic growth-dependent industrial metals. 'Base metals prices are moving in recent ranges amid thin summer trading conditions, lacking the catalyst to move decisively in one direction or the other,' said Standard Chartered analyst Sudakshina Unnikrishnan. Among other LME metals, zinc fell 0.7% to $2,807 a ton in official activity. Meanwhile, the discount of the cash contract against three-month zinc narrowed to 20 cents from $13 on August 15, with available stocks in LME-registered warehouses at a two-year low. Aluminium lost 0.7% to $2,591 a ton, lead eased by 0.5% to $1,998, tin added 0.1% to $33,650 and nickel rose 0.6% at $15,250.
