Man sentenced to prison for trafficking meth into Florida, Bradenton police say
A man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for trafficking nearly nine kilograms of meth into Florida, Bradenton police said.
In December 2023, Nicolas Garcia Hernandez traveled from Tennessee to Florida and delivered about 3 kilograms of meth to a Drug Enforcement Administration informant, prosecutors said.
In May 2024, investigators learned that Garcia Hernandez was going to make another delivery to the DEA informant. Florida Highway Patrol troopers thwarted the meth deal on Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County. After a K-9 picked up the scent, troopers found nearly 6 kilograms of meth in the car, prosecutors said.
According to an arrest report, investigators believe Garcia Hernandez acted as a courier, picking up the drugs in Georgia and intending to deliver the drugs to someone in Florida. Troopers said the drugs were hidden inside a Coca-Cola box and a Home Depot bucket.
Garcia Hernandez pleaded guilty to possession with the intent to sell meth in November, according to court records.

Three 'illegal aliens from Mexico' face charges following a methamphetamine lab bust in Cobb County. One is still on the run. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Juan Perez-Maldonado, Francisco Garcia Gomez and Filemon Hernandez-Jijon were charged after a federal operation on June 3. Officials said Drug Enforcement Administration agents saw Hernandez-Jijon allegedly supply two kilograms of meth to a drug customer in Smyrna. Then, they watched as Hernandez-Jijon go back and forth from a Marietta mobile home. Agents also found two handguns, including one that was hidden in the tank of a toilet, as well as money remitter receipts with Garcia Gomez's and Hernandez-Jijon's names, according to the Justice Department. USDOJ said agents searched an apartment in Smyrna in connection to the investigation, finding a bag with a loaded Glock pistol, two loaded magazines for a firearm and identification for Perez-Maldonado inside of a baby's crib. Also in the apartment, agents found a Springfield XD firearm and mechanical press used to turn powder into kilogram bricks, according to USDOJ. As the investigation continued, agents found that Perez-Maldonado and Hernandez-Jijon had already been deported and removed from the United States earlier. While Perez-Maldonado and Garcia Gomez appeared in court on Wednesday for charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, officials said Hernandez-Jijon is currently a fugitive. Cocaine smuggling ring used abandoned shipwreck to refuel high-speed "narco boats," police in Spain say
Combating narco-subs and narco-terrorism in the U.S. and abroad Police forces from several countries have dismantled an international drug trafficking ring that used what authorities called high-speed "narco boats" to smuggle large quantities of cocaine from Brazil and Colombia to Spain's Canary Islands, Spanish police said Friday. The ring is suspected of using 11 speedboats to pick up drugs from larger "mother ships" in different points in the Atlantic and then bring them to the archipelago located off northwestern Africa, police said in a statement. They also allegedly used an abandoned shipwreck as a refueling platform for the speedboats, authorities said. It is believed to be "one of the largest criminal organizations dedicated to cocaine trafficking operating from South America to the Canary Islands" using this method, the statement added. Officers arrested 48 people as part of the operation, which was carried out in cooperation with Britain's National Crime Agency, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and pan-European police agency Europol. The authorities have so far this year seized nearly 3,800 kilos of cocaine that was being smuggled by the gang, along with 19 boats and around 100,000 euros ($114,000) which belonged to the ring. Six properties and electronic and geolocation equipment were also seized, authorities said. Police forces from Colombia, France, Portugal, Poland and Cape Verde also took part in the operation. Spain is a major gateway to Europe for drug trafficking networks due to its ties to former colonies in Latin America and its proximity to Morocco, a top cannabis producer. The bust was announced one day after the U.S. Treasury announced it had sanctioned six accused drug traffickers allegedly using boats and "narco subs" to traffic cocaine. Four Guyanese nationals and two Colombians — Yeison Andres Sanchez Vallejo and Manuel Salazar — were accused of allegedly trafficking tons of cocaine from South America to the United States, Europe and the Caribbean.

Thousands of people flooded St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan on Friday to pay their final respects to 'America's Cop' Bernie Kerik, remembering him as a hero who 'took command' on 9/11. The former NYPD commissioner was eulogized by his son, Joey Kerik, as a steadfast family man even during his high-profile career leading the city's police department through the terror attacks. Kerik is survived by his wife, Hala Matil Kerik, and three children, including a son with ex-wife Jacqueline Llerena.
