Messi-led Argentina football team drops Kerala trip over scheduling clash, says State Minister

The Hindu04-08-2025
Argentina's national football team, led by legendary player Lionel Messi, will not visit Kerala, State Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman said on Monday (August 4, 2025).
The Minister had earlier insisted that the Messi-led Argentina side would visit the State as announced by the Kerala government, and that the sponsor had already paid the match fee for the event.
He told reporters on Monday that the foreign team informed them that they were facing difficulties in visiting the State in October this year, but the sponsor responded that "we are interested only in a visit in the month of October."
Mr. Abdurahiman had earlier said the team was more likely to come in October or November this year, and that they would be treated as State guests, with their security, accommodation, and other facilities provided by the government.

Delhi High Court upholds Brijinder Singh-led IGU as official golf body in India

The Indian Olympic Association New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has acknowledged the validity of the Brijinder Singh-led Indian Golf Union (IGU) as the recognised national federation for the sport of golf in the country. In its order, a single-judge bench of Justice Sachin Datta noted: 'The IGU led by Singh is duly recognised by the sports ministry as the sole NSF for golf in India; the elections held on Dec 15, 2024 for the IGU governing body were duly recognised by both the ministry and International Golf Federation (IGF) and that the elected body has continued to function and represent India internationally with the support of ministry. The court's directions came on a plea filed by the IGU against the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) failure to invite the IGU's duly-elected representatives to the NOC's Special General Body Meeting (SGBM) here on Wednesday. IGU's secretary S K Sharma informed TOI that as a result of the court's order, the IOA has agreed to send the names of the golfers for the Asian Youth Games (AYG), which have been forwarded by the Singh-led IGU, for representing India at the event, conforming with the selection policy of the body. These include Veer Ganpathy, Anshul Mishra, Raghav Gulati in the boys' section and Mannat Preet Brar, Zara Anand and Saanvi Somu in the girls' division. For the Youth Games, London Olympics bronze medallist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt has been named the chef-de-mission (CDM) by the IOA. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. To face Cristiano Ronaldo in ACL Two will be a dream: Brison

Brison Fernandes and FC Goa are determined to book a place in the group stage of the AFC Champions League Two, where they could be grouped with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, captained by Cristiano Ronaldo Margao: The debate over Cristiano Ronaldo versus Lionel Messi has divided football fans, and players, for nearly two decades. It's no different at FC Goa with Ronaldo loyalists and an equal number of those who swear by Messi's greatness. But the Goa camp is united in its determination to book a place in the group stage of the AFC Champions League Two, where they could be grouped with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, captained by Ronaldo. 'All of us wonder how great it would be to play against a player of Ronaldo's stature,' Brison told TOI on Tuesday. 'Personally, I've been a huge fan. I adore him a lot and follow in every possible way, in whatever manner I can. To be on the same field as Ronaldo would be a dream.' The first step for a dream come true would be for Goa to put it across Al Seeb in the ACL Two playoff at Fatorda on Wednesday. There will be 32 teams in the group stage, divided in eight groups of four. Interestingly, Goa's new Spanish midfielder David Timor has played alongside both Messi and Ronaldo during his time in La Liga, while Borja Herrera was up against Messi when Las Palmas faced Barcelona.
