Voters ‘board'? Mind games on: Character takes centre stage in Ludhiana West race

Time of India14 hours ago

Ludhiana: Can an election be so devoid of politico-economic issues that a candidate's demeanor and public conduct become the dominant electoral issue? That's the striking message emerging from Ludhiana (West), an assembly constituency braced for a fierce contest on June 19.
If the large-sized posters dotting every major roundabout and road and handouts reaching voters' doorsteps are to be believed, then apart from the routine promises of speedy delivery of development and official works, other major campaign themes are "arrogance", "respect" and "quarrelsome" nature of a candidate, who, if elected, "would keep fighting with the govt."
AAP slogans target Ashu's demeanor
The apparent target of this campaign is Congress nominee Bharat Bhushan Ashu and propaganda tools that are carrying this message hammer and tongs belong to the
Aam Aadmi Party
(AAP) nominee and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, who, with numerous such billboards, has successfully dominated the propaganda landscape of the segment.
"Na gussa na hankaar, kam hon ge lagataar (There will no anger and arrogance. There will continuous focus on works)" is one of the most visible slogans crafted by AAP to target Ashu and printed on almost every alternative billboard erected by AAP alongside major roads, completing its rhyme with "Aap da MLA, Aap Di sarkar (It will be AAP's MLA in AAP's government.)
As if "respect" is an election issue for voters, another slogan having reference to it as "Hon ge kamm, milega satikaar, AAP da MLA AAP di sarkar (Work will be done, respect will be bestowed; it will be AAP's MLA in AAP's government)"
AAP's attack on "arrogance" has attained another level in a handout circulated in some pockets of the constituency while pointing out three reasons to vote for Arora.
Apart from his "affable personality" and "his ability to get work done from his own govt if he becomes MLA", the third reason was "arrogance and insulting behavior of an opponent."
"Everyone knows how arrogant he was. He is folding hands because elections are around the corner. Once he wins, he will not even recognise you. Like what he did in past, he would insult others, he would pick quarrels…would irk masses and most importantly, he would keep quarreling with government for next two years.
No cleanliness, drains blocked, garbage everywhere…there will be no development", reads a portion of a handout published in Punjabi and distributed on Thursday morning.
On the other hand, in a press conference he addressed on Thursday along with senior Congress leader Pawan Khera, Ashu acknowledged he was being personally targeted through hoardings. When asked about allegations against AAP candidate, he responded, "I would not resort to such practices.
That's not the kind of politics I do."
Subtle replies on Cong billboards
It's not that only Arora's hoardings are carrying such slogans. Slogans on Ashu's hoarding also suggest that they are written with tongue-in-cheek. The most prominent of them is "Na jhooth na laare, kam karda bahut saare (Neither lies nor false promises. He is the one who get lot of works done)." Although slogan is targeting Ashu's opponents, it still leaves the onlookers guessing as to whom Ashu is targeting with these words.
Boxes
Cong's Punjabi versus 'outsider'
As Congress is pulling all stops to turn this elections into Punjabis versus Arvind Kejriwal contest, a very large sized hoarding installed at the main election office of Bharat Bhushan Ashu aptly delivers this message with the slogan, "Punjab de faisle, Punjabi lain ge ( Punjabis will take decisions about Punjab)."
SAD's 'tuhada apna'
Contrast to its traditional of contesting election on the religious-political-development plank, Shiromani Akali Dal's posters appearing somber and this time. Posters of advocate Parupkaar Singh Ghuman carry just one message: Tuhade vichon, tuhada apna (The one from amongst you, The one who is yours)"
BJP's reserved approach
Campaign posters and hoardings put up by BJP are also somber and avoid any negative sloganeering. Apart from routine promises of development and efficient work delivery, the posters also carry pictures of several national and state BJP leaders apart from the candidate Jiwan Gupta.

Priyanka Gandhi calls for corrective measures after Ahmedabad plane crash

Congress general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday said that once the reason for the Ahmedabad plane crash is found, corrective measures need to be taken to protect lives in the future. Ms. Vadra, who is on a two-day visit to Kerala to inaugurate various developmental projects in her Lok Sabha constituency, told reporters here that the whole nation was grieving over the lives lost in the crash. 'We should be united in our grief and provide as much solidarity as we can to the families of the passengers and others, including medical students, who lost their lives in the incident. It is a moment where we need to stand together and just provide solidarity,' she said. The Congress MP further said that it was also important to find 'what went wrong'. 'It is being investigated. I am sure the investigating agencies will in the next few days enlighten the nation as to what happened. Then in the future, whatever corrective measures need to be taken, will be taken to protect people and lives,' she said. U.N. motion In a post on 'X', Ms. Vadra termed 'shameful' and 'disappointing' the Indian government's decision to abstain from the U.N. motion to protect civilians and uphold humanitarian obligations in Gaza. She contended that the Indian government was refusing to take a stand when 60,000 people, mostly women and children, had been killed and the entire population of Gaza were being 'confined and starved to death.' The Congress MP alleged that not only was India being silent on the Gaza issue, it was 'cheering on' the Israeli government as it attacked Iran and assassinated its leadership. 'It is shameful and disappointing that our government has chosen to abstain on the U.N. motion for the protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations in Gaza... 'This is a tragic reversal of our anti-colonial legacy. In fact, not only are we standing silent as Mr. Netanyahu annihilates an entire nation, we are cheering on as his government attacks Iran and assassinates its leadership in flagrant violation of its sovereignty and complete contravention of all international norms,' she said on X. She questioned how the country can 'abandon' the principles of the Constitution and the values of the freedom struggle 'that led the way for an international arena based on peace and humanity'. 'There is no justification for this. True global leadership demands the courage to defend justice, India has shown this courage unfailingly in the past. 'In a world that is increasingly divisive, we must reclaim our voice for humanity and stand fearlessly for truth and non-violence,' she said in her post.

Congress seeks blanket farm loan waiver; says government has money for big projects but not for farmers

Senior Congress leaders in Maharashtra on Saturday accused the Mahayuti government of betraying farmers and demanded an immediate and across-the-board farm loan waiver , warning that the current agrarian crisis could spiral into a major agitation if not addressed urgently. They also alleged that the government always has money for mega projects like expressways , but claims that coffers were empty when it comes to helping farmers. "Farmers are poor and distressed. Instead of helping them, BJP leaders are rubbing salt on their wounds," former Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole said. "Maharashtra tops the chart in farmer suicides. The government must act decisively and wipe clean the debt records by ensuring full loan waivers for all farmers," he said. According to him, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule suggested that only 'eligible' farmers would get relief. Live Events "This is nothing but an insult. Farmers are by default eligible and in need. There should be no discrimination," he said. He accused the BJP of changing rules to benefit corporates while denying rightful relief to farmers. "During elections, they promised loan waivers, but now they are backing out and hiding behind committees," Patole said, adding that the Congress-led UPA government under the leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh had waived farm loans of Rs 70,000 crore without conditions, and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state had followed suit. The MLA from Sakoli alleged that the government found Rs 3,000 crore to increase contracts for a private firm, Megha Engineering, but claims to be cash-strapped when it comes to farmers. A Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and former state minister, Balasaheb Thorat, said the government should stop its "drama of forming committees" and immediately announce a blanket loan waiver. "The government had promised farm loan waivers in its very first cabinet meeting. Honouring this promise is both a political and moral obligation," Thorat said. Questioning the need for yet another committee, Thorat added, "The government always has money for expressways and mega projects but claims an empty treasury when it comes to farmers. Committees don't wipe debt, political will does." He warned that farmers, already devastated by unseasonal rains and crop losses across foodgrains, fruits, vegetables and cotton, are pushed to the brink with many forced to approach moneylenders due to denial of institutional credit. Thorat praised former MLA and Prahar Janshakti Party founder Bachchu Kadu's hunger strike for highlighting the gravity of the crisis and urged the government to stop "deception and delay". "Time is running out. If the government fails to act with urgency, it will face an uncontrollable backlash from the farming community," Thorat said. Kadu on Saturday ended his hunger strike after state minister Uday Samant assured him that his demands of farm loan waiver and hike in honorarium for persons with disabilities will be addressed by the government. Kadu was on a hunger strike in Gurukunj Mozari in Teosa taluka in Amravati district for the last seven days demanding complete loan waiver for farmers in Maharashtra and Rs 6,000 per month assistance for 'divyangjan'.
