Shock early exit leaves Sze Fei-Izzuddin at a loss for words

The Star23-07-2025
PETALING JAYA: Professional men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani were left stunned after their China Open campaign came to an abrupt end in the first round in Changzhou.
The defending champions, who were riding high after finishing runners-up at the Japan Open last week, were expected to cruise past South Korea's world No. 40 pair Kang Min-hyuk-Ki Dong-ju.
But the top seeds suffered a shock 21-15, 15-21, 17-21 defeat in a 56-minute encounter.
Clearly disappointed, Sze Fei-Izzuddin struggled to find words after the match and offered only a brief response.
They credited the Korean pair for their composure and tactical control that thwarted their hopes of advancing.
'I think we already tried our best, but our opponents were better than us today. In terms of the first three shots, they were able to control the game,' said Sze Fei in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie also endured a similar disappointment after going down 21-18, 22-24, 15-21 to Indonesia's Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu yesterday.
It has been a disappointing week for Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who not only lost their world No. 1 ranking to South Korea's Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae, but also slipped to No. 3 in the world behind compatriots Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
To make matters worse, just two days before their opening match in Changzhou, the pair were also caught in speculation that they might return to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). However, Sze Fei was quick to deny the rumours.
They now have a month to regroup and get themselves ready for the World Championships, which will be held in Paris starting on Aug 23.

Quality, quantity from Malaysia for World Championships

KUALA LUMPUR: It's a double booster. Malaysia will have both quality and quantity in men's doubles at next's World Championships in Paris. Malaysia will be the only country represented by four men's pairs, not even China or Indonesia, at the world meet. This came about after Wan Arif Junaidi–Yap Roy King became the fourth Malaysian pair to qualify for Paris. World No. 24 Arif–Junaidi came in after Indonesian world No. 17 Shohibul Fikri-Daniel Marthin decided not to compete in the world meet as Daniel is still recovering from knee surgery. Earlier, world No. 2 Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 4 Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and world No. 7 Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun have booked their world tickets. And Malaysia will be the only country boasting three world top-eight pairs in Aaron–Wooi Yik, Sze Fei–Izzuddin and Wei Chong–Kai Wun, and having the biggest representation. The more, the better is Malaysia's chance of landing a second world title since Aaron–Wooi Yik's triumph in 2022 in Tokyo where Malaysia were also represented by four pairs. However, a cautious national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said having the numbers may not make the task easier. "Numbers alone will not ensure success. We must make sure our preparation heads in the right way for the title. "So, it is not about how many of our pairs qualified for Paris. We will have to fight for that, and good preparation will ensure the title." Rexy's caution may have some truth, as Aaron–Wooi Yik were left to battle on their own after Sze Fei–Izzuddin, Ong Yew Sin–Teo Ee Yi and Goh V Shem–Tan Wee Kiong were eliminated before the World Championships quarter-final in 2022. Malaysia had three pairs at the last World Championships (2023), where Aaron–Wooi Yik secured a bronze while Wei Chong–Kai Wun and Yew Sin–Ee Yi crashed out in the third round.

Prayers answered as Arif-Roy King get golden ticket to Paris

National men's doubles shuttlers Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles shuttlers Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King have double the reason to celebrate. Not only did they book a spot in the quarter-finals of the Macau Open yesterday, but they also earned a last-minute ticket to the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25-31. According to the latest update from the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Arif-Roy King, who were initially second on the reserve list, made the cut following the withdrawal of several higher-ranked pairs. Among those who pulled out are China's He Jiting-Ren Xiangyu and Indonesia's Muhammad Shohibul Fikri-Daniel Marthin. Their inclusion means Malaysia will now have four men's doubles pairs at the world meet, including former world No. 1 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Asian champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, and Arif-Roy King. "I felt we had a good chance since we were second on the reserve list, but I told Arif to pray a bit harder so that we could make it in," said Roy King. "I'll definitely feel both nervous and excited to play there, as it will be our first appearance at the World Championships and having it in Paris makes it even more special. "For both Arif and I, it's something we're really looking forward to." The unexpected qualification has given Arif-Roy King a timely boost ahead of their quarter-final clash today against compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong. Arif-Roy King booked their spot after ousting India's Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy-Sai Pratheek 21-18, 21-18, while Azriyn-Wee Kiong battled past Indonesia's young duo Muhammad Putra Erwiansyah-Daniel Marvino 21-14, 15-21, 21-17. In the mixed doubles, Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing will take on second seeds Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi of China, while top seeds Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei are set to face Adnan Maulana-Indah Cahya Sari Jamil. Meanwhile, Justin Hoh is still in the running in the men's singles and will take on Thailand's Kantaphon Wangcharoen next.

Give Jonassen time to produce champions, says Hannah Yeoh

YOUTH and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has urged stakeholders to allow national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen sufficient time to revitalise Malaysia's badminton squad following their underwhelming display at the 2025 Badminton Asia Junior Championships (BAJC). She emphasised that the ministry has provided full support to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to strengthen the singles division under Jonassen's leadership. 'The new coach has just arrived and has yet to warm his seat to assess their performance properly. So, I feel that he deserves to be given time to evaluate their performance, and produce champions... this is something that cannot be achieved in a month or two,' she said during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Malaysian Women's Amateur Open golf championships at Templer Park Country Club. Hannah's remarks follow concerns raised by national badminton legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, who cautioned against placing excessive short-term expectations on Jonassen, who joined Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) less than a year ago. Former national coach Wong Tat Meng also warned of a looming crisis in Malaysia's singles badminton development after junior shuttlers exited early in BAJC 2025, which concluded on July 27. - Bernama
