2 charged in fatal 2018 hit-and-run in Terrace, B.C.
In the early hours of Nov. 18, 2018, 30-year-old Cameron Kerr was walking home from a wake along Highway 16 when he was struck and killed by a Ford F-350 pickup truck west of Terrace.
In the days following his death, tips from the community led to the seizure of two trucks, three trailers and two boats believed to be involved in the hit and run.
Arrests were made by B.C. Highway Patrol, with at least seven people interrogated, but no charges were laid.
The investigation was then transferred to the B.C. Major Crime Special Projects Unit, which worked with other teams to follow up on the case.
Now, Taylor Stogryn, 36, and Conrad Wierzbicki, 34, of Surrey, B.C., have been charged with indignity to human remains and obstructing justice. Police say Stogryn has also been charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
Kerr was well known in the community of about 20,000 people. He was involved in many different activities in Terrace, from kayaking to hockey.

Family of young Calgary couple, involved in horrific head-on crash, speaks out.
'It was sheer panic,' said Debbie Boswell, mother of Taylor Romoutar. The 33-year-old woman was driving her 35-year-old husband Jonathan Ramoutar to the airport in the early morning on July 21 — a routine they follow every Monday when Jonathon flies to northern Alberta, where he works in the province's oil industry. 'Taylor normally comes home after to sleep, but she never came home,' said Boswell. ' I ran upstairs and googled 'accidents in the northeast' — and I saw her what I thought was her car.' The family said Jonathon suffered a long list of internal injuries and has spent 10 days in the intensive care unit at Foothills Hospital — and one point they thought they might lose him. 'The doctor came to us and said it's not good, we can't guarantee tonight and it's minute-by-minute. There was 15 of us, all family and friends and we just all got into a big group hug and we all prayed and said how much we loved them,' said Taylor's sister. 'We just have had to keep doing that.' 'There's a lot to celebrate because we thankfully have our family members with us, but (they're) still not out of the woods,' she added. The couple, who were scheduled to have a walk through of their brand-new home in a couple of weeks, spent their wedding anniversary in the hospital — one floor separating them. 'It makes me emotional when they will finally get to see each other for the first time,' said Taylor's sister. 'They are just perfect, perfect together — everything I could have wanted for my little sister and more,' she said, wiping away tears. Temple crash victims in ICU were weeks away from moving into their new home

Article content Article content In the early hours of Monday, July 21, the couple had been on their way to the airport so Jonathan could travel for work. On their drive, a man driving a blue Ford F-150 in the wrong direction for the road struck a pedestrian, kept driving, and collided with the couple's vehicle head-on. Article content Article content The pedestrian struck by the vehicle was killed. Article content Article content Jonathan suffered a broken pelvis, clavicle, and legs, a collapsed lung, and injuries in his liver and bowels that required surgery. Taylor was faced with a completely shattered left knee, broken legs and arms, and a brain bleed that has fortunately not caused permanent damage. Article content Kevin Luc has known Jonathan since middle school. He was with him less than 12 hours before the crash, when Jonathan left early to be well rested for the early morning. 'I was just on the way back from daycare, from dropping off my daughter, and I got a call,' Luc said. Article content He didn't understand the severity of the crash at first, and hadn't fully processed it even when it was more thoroughly explained. He went to see them that same day. Article content 'They're always smiling, they're always happy. They have this warmth around them, and so seeing them in that state when they were on day-one, was just awful to see,' Luc said. Article content Article content 'John and Taylor are literally the, the most caring, compassionate, giving couple that I know,' he said. They'll always make time for you, make time for the people that are around them, despite being incredibly busy with their lives.' Article content The young couple had been only weeks away from taking possession of their new home. That's no longer the case. Article content 'Instead of staring out your window, looking at your backyard, you're instead staring at these harsh fluorescent ceiling lights,' Luc said. 'The bed that they were imagining waking up side by side with each other, they're now separated by sterile hospital beds in ICU units, apart from each other.' Article content 'Morgan, which is Taylor's sister, had to fly in from Fort Saint John, had to take this emergency flight just to see her sister, even though she's a mother of four,' he said. B.C. creates new 12-member RCMP unit to combat human trafficking
The B.C. government has announced it will fund a new police unit to investigate human trafficking crimes and expand support for victims. The 12-member counter-human-trafficking unit will include two teams, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Nina Krieger said at a news conference Wednesday. The education team will train officers throughout B.C. on how to identify and respond to human trafficking incidents, and how to differentiate between what is and isn't human trafficking, Krieger said. She said people who engage in sex work by their own choice are not the targets of the province's efforts. The investigative team will lead multi-jurisdictional operations throughout B.C. Chief Supt. Elija Rain, officer in charge of the B.C. RCMP major crime section, said human trafficking is difficult to detect and investigate. "The creation of the new B.C. RCMP counter-human-trafficking unit strengthens our ability to investigate these crimes, target traffickers through intelligence, education and investigative means," Rain said at the news conference. There were 43 incidents of human trafficking reported to police in B.C. in 2023, but Rain said human trafficking is "hidden in plain sight" and added statistics are "grossly underreported." "We anticipate that, within a year, we're going to see a significant rise in stats," Rain said, and added the crimes hit "all four corners of this province." Krieger said this work was previously done through a counter-exploitation unit with two officers. Funding for the new unit will come from the province's $230-million allocation to the RCMP provincial police service to hire 256 members over three years in specialized units, such as major crimes, internet child exploitation and the B.C. Highway Patrol.
