Because of the location and terrain around the bridge, firefighters faced challenges in accessing it. A portion of Highway 6 was temporarily closed during firefighting efforts.
The DCSO said the bridge suffered significant damage and is unsafe for use. The section of the trail that the bridge is part of was already closed because of scheduled maintenance and improvements.
Officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
Fire crews from Adel, Dallas Center, De Soto, Redfield, Minburn, Van Meter, and Waukee all assisted in putting out the fire.

Building near downtown Sedalia ‘in state of collapse,' city says

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A vacant building near downtown Sedalia is 'in a state of collapse,' prompting the city to close part of the street and sidewalk. The city of Sedalia warned residents in Facebook posts Wednesday that eastbound traffic on West Main Street near Kentucky Avenue would be closed due to 'structural concerns' at 207 W. Main St. 3 taken to hospital after car crashes into building in Kansas City The building has been in disrepair for months, but the city said recent storms have caused damage. The city said it called on a licensed structural engineer to conduct an initial inspection of the building, which was completed by Wednesday afternoon. The engineer found that the building requires 'immediate and extreme' repairs or may face demolition. The city said it is expecting to receive a full report from the engineer within two weeks, but based on initial findings, it plans to pursue a court order to have the building demolished. It said it is working with an attorney representing the property owners. 'Our responsibility is to protect the public. We're following all legal and safety protocols to address this situation quickly and carefully,' the city said in a statement. 'Further updates will be provided as formal documentation is received and next steps are confirmed.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Warm and sticky, scattered showers, storms

Skies will remain mostly cloudy, with occasional showers and isolated storms developing along a slow-moving cold front, especially across the eastern half of the state with a ripple of low pressure. Temperatures will hover around 80s degrees, although only in the mid-70 farther northwest behind the front. A cluster of showers and storms south of the nearly stalled front will brush southern Ohio this evening and linger overnight, focused well to the south of I-70. As the frontal boundary sags south Saturday, skies will turn partly sunny, with temperatures in the seasonable upper 70s. However, another round of showers will return early Sunday with a disturbance crossing the Ohio Valley through early afternoon, with some clearing later in the day. More scattered storms are likely Monday afternoon and early Tuesday, as a system drops southeast from the Canadian plains. Skies will finally clear up by the middle of next week, as high pressure builds into the region, with temperatures warming to the low 80s. Friday: Mostly cloudy, few showers, storms. High 81 Tonight: Showers early, fog later. Low 64 Saturday: Partly sunny. High 79 Sunday: Showers, storms. High 77 (64) Monday: Partly sunny, showers, storms p.m. High 77 (63) Tuesday: Scattered showers, storms. High 77 (60) Wednesday: Mostly sunny. High 80 (58) Thursday: Partly sunny.
