As charges swirl, KLIS duel boils over

Hyderabad: Irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy slammed former minister T Harish Rao , alleging that Telangana's irrigation sector suffered irreversible damage due to the faulty decisions made by the BRS govt. He demanded Harish Rao tender an unconditional apology for misleading the people of the state on the Kaleshwaram project. In a statement on Saturday, Uttam refuted the allegations levelled by Harish Rao and claimed that after the BRS govt inaugurated the project in 2019, only 162 TMC of water was lifted, of which 63 TMC was released into the sea. He demanded an answer from Harish on how the BRS govt managed to irrigate 22 lakh acres with just 99 TMC. "The BRS govt took out rallies after their delegation returned from Maharashtra and announced that a barrage would be constructed at Thummidihatti. A gravity canal was also constructed from Thummidihatti to Yellampally, covering a distance of 100 km. While that was a gravity-based project, Kaleshwaram relies on reverse pumping — only to release a huge quantity of water into sea," the minister claimed. He also dismissed allegations that the previous Congress govt had spent very little on the Pranahitha-Chevella project. He said before the formation of state, 6,156 crore was spent on the project and by 2016, it rose to 11,679 crore. The minister further said the Central Water Commission had never claimed there was no water availability at Thummidithatti. He said that had the BRS govt completed the project at the site with about 38,000 crore, it could have irrigated 17 lakh acres of new ayacut up to Chevella — eliminating the need for 1 lakh crore for the Kaleshwaram project. Of the remaining amount of 62,000 crore (if Pranahitha-Chevella was taken up with 38,000 cr), the govt could have completed many projects such as Palamuru, Nettampadu, Bheema, SLBC, Dindi, Sitharama, and other projects, Uttam claimed. He further said the govt was paying 16,000 crore in interest on the loans taken by the BRS govt for the Kaleshwaram project.

Tummala terms Eatala Rajender's remarks on Kaleshwaram as ‘motivated and misleading'

Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao strongly refuted the comments of BJP MP and his former colleague in the BRS government, Eatala Rajender, before the PC Ghose Commission on the Kaleshwaram project that alleged his role in the clearance of the project. 'Eatala's comments on me are completely false, and one wonders whether they were made under external pressure,' the Minister remarked at a press conference here on Saturday while questioning the motives behind them. Mr. Tummala clarified that the sub-committee he had referenced was not related to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project but to look into other pending projects under the broader umbrella of irrigation, such as Devadula, Kantanapalli, and Dummugudem. 'It was never constituted specifically for Kaleshwaram project,' he explained. The Minister also revealed that the Kaleshwaram project never received formal Cabinet approval. The KCR Cabinet did not deliberate or come forward with a decision on the project. The works were executed merely based on an executive order, he argued. The Minister announced that he would submit the sub-committee report related to irrigation projects to the Kaleshwaram Commission suo motu, and would fully cooperate with the panel. 'At the appropriate time, I will tell the Commission what really happened with the Kaleshwaram project,' he said. He further said, 'My suggestions at that time were always in the interest of the people and farmers.' He said he is ready for a transparent discussion with anyone, but misleading the people with false statements is not acceptable.

Eatala Rajender shielding KCR in Kaleshwaram probe: Congress

The ruling Congress leaders, including Government Whip Aadi Srinivas, have slammed BJP MP from Malkajgiri and former Finance Minister Eatala Rajender, accusing him of attempting to shield former Chief Minister and BRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao in the probe into the irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) during his appearance before Justice P.C. Ghose Commission. The Vemulawada MLA said that it has now become evident that the merger of BJP and BRS would be a reality sooner or later. Speaking to the media at CLP media point here on Saturday, the Vemulawada MLA has charged Mr. Rajender, the finance minister in the KCR Cabinet, with trying to assist his former boss come out clean from the charges he is facing in the execution of the KLIS. 'Mr. Rajender did not disclose the truth, though everyone anticipated that he would spill the beans before the commission. Even BJP leaders, including Union Minister Kishan Reddy, said that Mr. Rajender would reveal the truth behind the KLIS,' Mr. Srinivas said, reminding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief JP Nadda had also accused Mr. Rao and his family of using the Kaleshwaram project as an ATM. 'The BJP leaders demanded several times to order a probe into the KLIS fraud. Mr. Rajender himself also stated that Mr. Rao did everything concerning the KLIS. But Mr. Rajender had deposed before the commission contradicting his statements,' the MLA said, questioning his u-turn. 'As BRS leader Kavitha already said that there was an understanding between BJP and BRS, now this has been proved again with Mr. Rajender's statement, ' the MLA said, demanding an explanation from BJP leaders Mr. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Rajender's statement. Meanwhile, Choppadandi MLA Medipally Sathyam also made similar comments against Mr. Rajender. 'It seems as if he is going to the BRS,' he alleged.
