New York cocoa prices climb while coffee turns lower

LONDON: New York cocoa futures rose on Tuesday, buoyed by fund short-covering against a backdrop of concern over the outlook for production in top grower Ivory Coast.
Cocoa
New York cocoa rose 2.9% to $8,688 a metric ton by 1408 GMT, climbing back towards Monday's six-week high of $8,823.
Dealers said the market had gained support this week from concern over Ivory Coast's coming crop, with the initial upward move on Monday helping to trigger short-covering by funds.
More sunny spells across most of Ivory Coast's cocoa-growing regions will help to boost development of the next October-to-March main crop, farmers said on Monday, adding that cold weather continued last week with below-average rainfall.
London cocoa gained 2.05% to 5,830 pounds a ton.
Coffee
Arabica coffee futures were down 1.5% at $3.1580 per lb after touching a six-week high of $3.27.
Dealers said reports of light, spotty frosts in some Brazilian coffee areas had contributed to the run-up in prices this week, though the harvest continues to progress well.
Temperatures, however, are expected to moderate in the coming days.
'A cold air mass will retreat from southeast Brazil over the next three days, though it will linger near the southern border until early next week,' Marcin Gorski, analyst with LSEG Weather and Climate Research, said in a report.
Robusta coffee fell 1.5% to $3,610 a ton.
Sugar
Raw sugar ?????rose 2.55% to 16.91 cents per lb.
Dealers said the market had been steadily climbing after hitting a one-month low of 15.92 cents in early August, with speculators beginning to scale back a large net short position.
White sugar gained 2.1% to $484.80 a ton.

Toronto stocks subdued as investors await pivotal US-Russia meet

Canada's main stock index was flat on Friday as investors awaited a high-stakes meeting between Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin on a potential path to ending the war in Ukraine. The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was up 0.03% at 27,924.45 points. Among TSX sub-indexes, healthcare led weekly gains after a 3.7% rise on the day, boosted by a 37% weekly jump in Bausch Health Companies, its biggest rise since May 2023. Materials was the biggest drag, down 0.5%, as gold prices traded with caution ahead of the Trump-Putin talks. The stage was set for the U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska, scheduled for 11 a.m. Alaska time (1900 GMT), to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine that Washington views as a potential path to ending Europe's deadliest war since World War Two. Trump said a second summit involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy could follow if the talks go well. 'Short-term investors are hoping at least the meeting brings some kind of ceasefire or at least have continuous talks aswe're moving towards the end of the summer,' said Michael Constantino, CEO at Webull Canada. TSX's moves also mimicked Wall Street's benchmark S&P 500 index, which was largely flat. However, the blue-chip The Dow Jones Industrial Average took the spotlight as it hit an all-time intraday high. Despite the tepid moves, ongoing expectations for U.S. Federal Reserve easing have kept Canadian equities on track to finish the week higher. The TSX is up 0.5% so far this week. Data on Friday showed Canadian factory sales grew 0.3% in June from May, led by petroleum, coal and food products, while wholesale trade rose 0.7% on gains in food, beverage and tobacco. South of the border, retail sales rose by an expected 0.5% in July, but a spike in import prices raised concerns that U.S. tariffs could fuel inflation in the months ahead.

Copper slips on worries over weak Chinese data

LONDON: Copper prices eased on Friday on gloomy economic data from top metals consumer China, thoughlosses were cushioned by a weaker dollar and hopes the data would spur Beijing to unleash more stimulus measures. Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange fell 0.4% to $9,730 a metric ton in official open-outcry trading, down from a two-week peak hit on Tuesday. Data on Friday showed that China's factory output growth slumped to an eight-month low in July while retail sales slowedsharply. The copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange eased 0.1% to 79,060 yuan ($11,008.23) a ton. 'In the context of base metals, these indicators suggest a subdued demand environment, likely weighing on metal consumptionand prices amid concerns of a slowing Chinese economy,' said Neil Welsh, head of metals at Britannia Global Markets. Copper prices mixed as market awaits China data, supply woes offer support Prices were supported, however, by hopes that the weak data would raise pressure on Chinese policymakers to roll out more stimulus to revive domestic demand. Also bolstering the market was a softer dollar as investors remained cautious about the interest rate outlook ahead of import price data. A decline in the dollar makes commodities priced in the U.S. currency less expensive for buyers using other currencies. U.S. Comex copper futures fell 0.1% to $4.48 per lb by 1225 GMT, bringing the Comex premium over LME copper to $127 a ton or 1.3%. Among other metals, LME aluminium shed 0.7% in official activity to $2,601.50 a ton, zinc lost 1.3% to$2,813 and lead slipped 0.3% to $1,984 while nickel was up 0.3% at $15,075 and tin firmed by 0.3% to $33,550.
