Flamengo 2 Bayern Munich 4: Harry Kane gets two, including long-range stunner, as Germans reach Club World Cup quarters

The Sun21 hours ago

HARRY KANE bagged a deadly double to power Bayern Munich into a blockbuster Club World Cup quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
The England skipper rifled home from 25 yards on nine minutes to double Bayern's lead following an early own goal from Flamengo's Erick Pulgar.

And it was the 31-year-old's typically classy finish on 73 minutes that finally killed off Brazilian giants Flamengo after they'd threatened a comeback.
Vincent Kompany's men were in total control for long periods, even though they were pegged back in the 32nd minute when Gerson smashed an unstoppable shot past Manuel Neuer.
Brazilian hopes were dented again just four minutes before the break after German international Leon Goretzka curled in a beauty from 20 yards.
Bayern were bossing proceedings at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium.
But Flamengo, coached by ex-Chelsea full-back Filipe Luis, and backed by thousands of fans here, were given hope on 54 minutes.
Former Crystal Palace ace Michael Olise was adjudged to have handled in the box by English ref Michael Oliver, and Jorghino, signed at the end of the season from Arsenal, rolled in from the spot.
The South Americans sensed blood and went for the kill, trying to force extra time.
Kane, though, is desperate to land his second piece of silverware of the season after landing the Bundesliga title.

And his clinical strike with 17 minutes left took his tally for this campaign to 41 goals from 50 games - and set up a meeting with Champions League winners PSG in Atlanta next Saturday.
Kane was asked about the prospect of facing PSG in a post-game interview with DAZN.
He said: "It's going to be another tough game. PSG have had an amazing season.
"We played them earlier in the year and we came out on top so we have to use that energy and that feeling.
"We feel like we can beat anyone when we're at our level.

Lionel Messi reveals biggest Club World Cup regret following Inter Miami's thrashing by PSG

Lionel Messi revealed Inter Miami's biggest regret at the Club World Cup following their thrashing by PSG on Sunday was the side's 10 minute collapse in their final group stage game against Palmeiras. Having progressed to the round of 16 after a second placed finish in the group stage, Messi faced former club and European champions PSG in what was a 4-0 annihilation of the American side, ending Inter Miami's hopes of becoming world champions. However, Messi has revealed that the loss had felt even more bitter amongst the squad following the late capitulation against Palmeiras in the final group stage game, which saw head coach Javier Mascherano's side throw away a 2-0 lead in the dying minutes. Asked for his thoughts on Inter Miami's performance at the Club World Cup after their loss to PSG, the Argentine and club captain Messi stated, 'We remain with the sentiment against Palmeiras that winning the game 2-0 and drawing we had to face PSG which was more complicated…Getting the draw in the final minutes left a sour taste'. Despite the best efforts of Messi and a world class finish from forward Luis Suarez, the Herons conceded twice in the last ten minutes of the game against the Brazilian team. Failure to secure the win against Palmeiras meant that Inter Miami were able to place only second in their group rather than topping it, resulting in an unfavourable draw - against one of tournament favourites and Champions league winners PSG - rather than an easier clash with Brazilian side Botafogo in the first knockout round. Spanish left back Jordi Alba, who played with Messi at Barcelona for nine years, shared the regrets of the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner that Inter Miami's ultimately disappointing group stage performance had hindered the squad's hopes for success at the tournament. 'I'll say it openly, we were better than all three of our group rivals, in my opinion,' emphasized the defender following the defeat to PSG. 'Today, we were talking about a very great rival, and they really put you through their paces, but, well, things are what they are'. Despite qualifying for the knockouts being considered a success amongst those who follow Inter Miami, the feeling amongst the side and talisman Lionel Messi has undoubtedly been revealed as one marred by a sense of what-if in relation to their draw against Palmeiras. With another four years to wait before the next Club World Cup in 2029, 38-year-old and three-time Club World Cup winner Messi's regret from this game seems set to serve as a disappointing end to his club career on the world stage.

Bayern Munich 'are eyeing up swoop for Liverpool forward Luis Diaz after European giant saw bid rejected' - as star makes admission over his future

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz is being eyed up for a summer swoop by Bayern Munich, a report has claimed - and he has admitted he is talking to other clubs. The Bundesliga giants have shortlisted Diaz as they look to strengthen at left wing, alongside PSG 's Bradley Barcola and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams. That is according to Sky Germany, with Bayern bosses Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge finding Diaz, 28, 'very exciting'. Despite the interest, there has not yet been official contact from the Bavarian side, but Liverpool could be open to selling the Colombian for a reasonable offer. Indeed, they are said to be drawing up potential alternatives should Diaz move on. The versatile Diaz made 50 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists, and helped the Reds win the Premier League. Addressing his future while on international duty, Diaz said: 'I'm very, very happy in Liverpool. From day one, they've made me feel really welcome. 'Right now we're in contact with them because we're speaking with [other] clubs. It's normal, the market is open, and we're trying to sort out what's best for us. 'I am just waiting to see what happens. If Liverpool doesn't make a good offer, I still have two years left with them, I would be happy and content to stay there. And that's it, everything depends on them obviously, it's up to me to decide what's best for us.' Diaz moved to Anfield from Porto in January 2022, in a deal worth around £50million. He has scored 41 goals in his 148 total appearances for the Reds, tasting success in the top-flight as well as lifting the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups. Under contract until 2027, Diaz has not been formally offered an extension, and he could slip behind Florian Wirtz in the pecking order next season. Previous reports indicated that Barcelona saw an approach rebuffed this month, while Saudi Pro League outfit Al Nassr have also been credited with an interest. Diaz is said to have been open to joining the LaLiga club, believing this is the right time for a new chapter after three-and-a-half successful campaigns on Merseyside. Spanish newspaper SPORT said Diaz's asking price sits at around £51m - a valuation that Barcelona are unlikely to reach despite him being a top target. However, head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco have both given the green light for the transfer in what has been dubbed 'Operation Luis Diaz'. Liverpool, meanwhile, have already made five signings this summer. Wirtz joined for a club-record £116m fee from Bayer Leverkusen, quickly followed by team-mate Jeremie Frimpong, while Milos Kerkez arrived from Bournemouth. Goalkeepers Armin Pecesi and Freddie Woodman will provide back-up to Alisson.
