Beyoncé's Levi's jeans ad pulled into Sydney Sweeney backlash
"Euphoria" star Sweeney is facing backlash as the face of American Eagle's newest campaign. The denim ad and its tagline 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans' drew sharp criticism online with some users accusing the brand of promoting eugenics.
In a campaign video, Sweeney lies in a full denim ensemble as she leans into wordplay: "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue." The camera then shows Sweeney's blue eyes before a message reads, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans."
The criticism wasn't about the denim itself, but the language used. Social media users argued the phrase 'great genes' paired with a blond-haired, blue-eyed star echoed eugenic ideas — the discredited belief in improving humanity through selective breeding. Some also argued it contributed to the glorification of whiteness.
Eventually, Beyoncé's recent Levi's campaign, where she poses in a similar position in a denim-on-demin outfit with blond hair, was dragged into the discourse.
One user wrote, "So Beyoncé can pose in Levi jeans and it's art… But when a white woman does it, it's a national crisis?" as she shared a photo of the two ads side-by-side. However, many were quick to point out the differences between the two.
Another said, "Just going to leave this pic form Beyoncé Levi's campaign right here for those saying Sydney Sweeney with her blond hair/denim/sultry look is racist..." A user responded, "No one said that, what was said though was that the ad's inference that blonde hair and blue eyes are superior."
The Grammy-winning singer announced her collaboration with Levi's last fall. She has since released multiple campaigns with the denim powerhouse. But she has never alluded to genes or genetics, focusing solely on the quality and design of the jeans themselves.
One social media user, @dukepege, takes this notion a step deeper: "At what point will it be fully understood that proclaiming or implying 'my genes (jeans) are better' is frightening to any race who's ancestors for long generations have had to suffer at the hands of the very same race of people with the same kind of thinking — that their genes are superior?"
He added, "No, such statements are not benign; they are echoes of a violent and dehumanizing history and the fact that you involve Beyoncé explains very well how you're still unable to comprehend what's being felt."
The conversation comes after Beyoncé was baselessly pulled into another controversy when President Donald Trump accused her of being paid $11 million to endorse Kamala Harris' presidential bid — a payment the the Federal Election Commission has no record of.
The Grammy-winning singer concluded her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour in Las Vegas on July 26. The 32-stop stadium tour became the highest grossing country tour, earning over $400 million.

Review: Doechii delivers a hip hop master class at Lollapalooza
No one is having a better year than Doechii. The Florida rapper, 'The Swamp Rula,' released her critically-acclaimed mixtape 'Alligator Bites Never Heal' in August 2024 and hasn't hit the brakes since, taking home the Grammy for best rap album — only the second woman to do so— as well as gracing runways in New York and Paris and putting on some of the most dynamic live performances on and off screen. Bringing us to her Saturday night Lollapalooza set on the T-Mobile stage. With respect to Rüfüs Du Sol, Doechii should've headlined. Welcoming thousands to Doechii's School of Hip Hop, complete with a giant, funhouse-style boombox center stage, she rapped, writhed, and twerked circles around a troupe of dancers (delivering choreography that would make the great, ballroom pioneer Willi Ninja proud) and delivered lessons in bars, flow, genre, scratching and word play for just under an hour. Teasing her own headlining 'Live From the Swamp Tour' by the end, she left everyone wanting more. Doechii is one of a kind. With a looming, unbodied voice ringing out to encourage her ascent throughout her performance, Doechii, grounded by DJ Miss Milan, wielded the power of mania, tension, drama, and queer joy like a spear, piercing any posturing or pretension to free herself and her onstage classmates/dancers from the tyranny of self-doubt and limitations. One of the most versatile vocalists in today's mainstream, she oscillated seamlessly from growled, ruthless rhyme ('Nissan Altima,' 'Nosebleeds,' 'Catfish') and full-throated screams to smooth melodies and big crescendos, like on 'Anxiety.' For the house-flecked 'Alter Ego' — during which she referenced her infamous Met Gala 'umbrella incident' during her outfit change — she welcomed former City Girl member JT to the stage after hinting at a special guest in the days leading up to her Lolla debut. Both women were beaming from the big screens and the fields of the south end of Grant Park were awash in flailing hands and fans snapping in the air. Black girl magic, indeed. With her signature extra-long braids and head-to-toe DSquared2 custom outfits, Doechii covered every inch of that stage bathed in adulation. Classic hip hop and pop samples were woven into interludes throughout her set, including 'Pull Over' by Trina, Doug E. Fresh's 'La Di Da Di' and Beyonce's 'America Has a Problem.' Before delivering her megahit 'Denial is a River,' the unbodied voice — taking a kinder tone— spoke about how every master of something starts as a student. That the importance and interconnection of studying and honoring what you're choosing to dedicate yourself to is just as important as the final result. Then she appeared again. An icon born — the self-proclaimed 'hip hop Madonna,' 'trap Grace Jones,' making all the hard work look effortless, and so damn fun.

Browns reporter takes savage shot at Bill Belichick-Jordon Hudson romance in Hall of Fame speech
Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot took a brutal jab at Bill Belichick's highly publicized romance with 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson on Friday when she accepted the Bill Nunn Memorial Award during the Pro Football Hall of Fame Gold Jacket Dinner in Canton, Ohio. Cabot, who began covering the Browns in 1991, the same year Belichick, 73, took over as coach in Cleveland, first joked about going through the wringer with the future Hall of Famer. 'Bill Belichick was the first Browns coach I ever covered,' Cabot began, as covered by Awful Announcing. 'You see, if you start out with Bill Belichick, no one can rattle you after that. If Bill didn't like something I wrote, he'd call and yell at me. If you asked a dumb question, he'd call you out. Eventually, I had to learn to stand up to him. During one of those yelling matches, I told him, if you don't have the 'footballs' to say that to the guys, then don't say it to me. Bam.' Getty Images That's when Cabot's speech pivoted to the UNC coach's widely scrutinized personal life. Advertisement 'But now, I totally understand why Bill gave me such a hard time. I was 28 at the time, and he just couldn't relate to a woman that old,' Cabot said as the audience roared with laughter. Although many on social media also chuckled over Cabot's zinger, the remarks didn't appear to please everyone. 4 Mary Kay Cabot speaks at the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Gold Jacket Dinner on Aug. 1, 2025. No wonder so many have contempt for the media, especially those who want to be the story rather than [report] on the story.' Belichick's romance with Hudson was first revealed in June 2024. 4 Bill Belichick is preparing for his first season as football coach of the Tar Heels. AP Their relationship has largely been under a microscope following a disastrous 'CBS Sunday Morning' interview in April, when Hudson pushed back on a question intended for Belichick about how they met. Coldplay's Grammy-Winning Song Triples Its Sales In One Week
Coldplay's catalog has been climbing steadily for several weeks now, driven up and up by a mix of the momentum generated by the band's ongoing Music of the Spheres World Tour, as well as several moments of virality. During the latest leg of the trek, one of Coldplay's older tunes, 'Sparks,' unexpectedly picked up steam on TikTok, becoming a win on the charts thanks to renewed exposure. Around the same time, a kiss cam inadvertently exposed an affair between the CEO and head of HR at a company, and that saga has remained in the news ever since. Amidst all that excitement, several Coldplay classics have bounded up various Billboard charts, and one of the band's most successful singles has returned to a new peak position – and it almost gives the group another No. 1. 'Viva La Vida' Returns to a Pair of Charts 'Viva La Vida' reappears on a pair of rankings in the United States this week, breaking back onto both the Alternative Digital Song Sales chart and the Alternative Streaming Songs tally. The smash lands at No. 14 on the streaming-only list, missing its previously-set high point by just one spot, and it performs significantly better when it comes to purchases. 'Viva La Vida' reenters the Alternative Digital Song Sales chart at No. 2, reaching a new all-time peak. Only 'Punkrocker' by Teddybears and Iggy Pop, which opened in first place last frame, blocks the Grammy-winning track from ruling. Half a Dozen No. 1 Smashes Coldplay has already earned six No. 1 on the Alternative Digital Song Sales chart. The group has previously led the charge on this tally with 'My Universe' alongside BTS, 'A Sky Full of Stars,' 'We Pray' alongside Little Simz, Burna Boy, Elyanna and Tini, 'Midnight' and 'Paradise.' Another No. 2 Hit 'Viva La Vida' is Coldplay's ninth single to peak in the runner-up spot on this ranking. That collection of near-chart-toppers includes familiar tracks like 'Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,' 'Hymn for the Weekend,' 'Higher Power,' and 'All My Love,' among others. Sales Grew By More Than 200% Sales of 'Viva La Vida' skyrocketed recently, growing more than 200% from one frame to the next. According to Luminate, the former Hot 100 champion sold just under 500 copies one week, and then almost 1,600 the following frame. At the moment, Coldplay fills four spaces on the Alternative Digital Song Sales chart, and all of those tunes are mounting comebacks.
