2025 - A Year Of Firsts For RCB, Harry Kane, Crystal Palace And Now South Africa
South Africa won their first senior men's title in 27 years by defeating Australia at Lord's, joining several other sporting fairytales in this 'year of firsts'.
The 27-year-long streak is over. South Africa have won a senior men's title in this century, after years and years of tantalizing near-misses in World Cups and Champions Trophies.
They beat none other than the most successful side of this period, Australia, by five wickets, at no lesser place than the Home of Cricket, Lord's, to commemorate it. The win was set up by the bowlers, who reduced the Aussies to 212 and 207 respectively in their batting essays, keeping the leash on knockout demons like Steve Smith, Travis Head and even, to a part, Pat Cummins.
Cummins wasn't quiet with the ball as he shot Temba Bavuma's team for just 138 in the second innings, which meant the target was a hefty 282. South Africa were in early trouble after losing two wickets for 70, but centurion Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma's sensational 147-run partnership broke the back of the chase.
South Africa's special triumph is just another enhancement to this stunning year for sport (it's not over yet), where many trophy droughts have ended around the world.
Here's a look at other major teams/players who've won a major trophy in 2025 so far after years of waiting.
Cricket
2. Royal Challengers Bengaluru win IPL: One of the only three original-eight teams to have never won the IPL title, RCB ended their 18-year-long wait by finishing second in the 2025 points table and then thumping Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad. Virat Kohli top-scored in the first innings (as he did for RCB throughout the season), and important wickets from Krunal Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar sealed the deal.
Andy Flower's revolutionary mentorship and Rajat Patidar's fresh-ideas-filled captaincy turned around what had become one of the biggest memes in the sport. RCB could finally say Ee Saala Cup Namdu (This year, the cup is ours). However, most of the euphoria was marred by the deaths of 11 people in the stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the team's celebrations.
3. Hobart Hurricanes win BBL: Nathan Ellis-led Hobart Hurricanes were also one of the two teams to have never won the Big Bash League (BBL) until earlier this year. They beat David Warner's Sydney Thunder in the final played at the Ninja Stadium in front of their home crowd on January 27 to end the 14-year-long wait. Mitchell Owen's jaw-dropping 42-ball 108 led them to chasing 183 runs in less than 15 overs.
Football
1. Newcastle United: English football club Newcastle United secured their first major trophy since 1954-55 (70 years!) by beating eventual Premier League Champions Liverpool in the 2024-25 League Cup final played at Wembley on March 16. Defender and boyhood Magpie, Dan Burn, and Alexander Isak scored in the 2-1 win.
2. Crystal Palace: London club Crystal Palace, despite having a huge legacy, had never won a major domestic title in its 119-year-long history. They changed that in the FA Cup 2025 final against Manchester City at Wembley on May 17, securing a famous one-goal win. 26-year-old attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze scored the solitary goal in the 16th minute.
3. PSG: French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain smashed multiple-time champions Inter Milan 5-0 in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League final played at Allianz Arena in Munich on Saturday (May 31), in one of the most resounding wins ever in Europe's most prestigious football competition.
It was the Paris-based club's first-ever European Championship title. What the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr, and several other legends failed to do for the Parisians, despite their relentless wins domestically, Ousmane Dembele and his young team achieved under Luis Enrique's mentorship.
4. Spurs win Europa League: North London-based Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 1-0 to win the 2024-25 Europa League title. The Lilywhites' previous major title came back in the 2007-08 season when they bagged the League Cup.
Like RCB, their lack of trophies was joked about regularly, but Australian coach Ange Postecoglou came through with his prophecy that he 'always wins trophies in his second season' to end them once and for all. Postecoglu has since been let go of, with the more pragmatic Thomas Frank taking over.
5. Harry Kane wins first major trophy: Talking about Spurs, their former captain and arguably English football's greatest footballer, Harry Kane, had never won a major trophy until this year. His move from Spurs to Bundesliga's serial winners Bayern Munich seemed like the end of that curse, but they went trophyless, too.
Germany finally awarded him as Bayern comfortably won the Bundesliga in the 2024-25 season, and he played a big role by finishing as the leading goal scorer.
5. Bologna: Italian club Bologna defeated AC Milan 1-0 in the Coppa Italia final played on May 15. The narrow win over Rossoneri at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome helped the Serie A club win its first major trophy since the 1973-74 Coppa Italia title win — another historic achievement.

Madison Keys wins US Open: Madison Keys, an American tennis professional, has been competing at the highest level since 2009. This year, she achieved her first Grand Slam title. In the 2025 AUS Open final against Aryna Sabalenka, Keys secured a memorable victory with scores of 6–3, 2–6, 7–5.

Axar Patel deserves ‘explanation' for T20I vice-captaincy being snatched: 'Hope he didn't come to know in press'
Former India batter Mohammad Kaif reckons Axar Patel is owed an 'explanation' after the T20I vice-captaincy was snatched from him and given to Shubman Gill for the upcoming eight-team Asia Cup. The All India Men's Senior Selection Committee on Tuesday unveiled the 15-member squad for the tournament, beginning September 9. Axar, who was the vice-captain for India's last T20I assignment—the five-match series against England earlier this year—is no longer Suryakumar Yadav's deputy, as the all-important position has now been given to Gill. Axar Patel is no longer the vice-captain in T20Is. (PTI) Gill, who is the Test captain, makes his way to India's T20I setup after more than a year. He last played a T20I in 2024 against Sri Lanka. However, he was never dropped from the team as he was rested to keep him fit for the Test and ODI assignments. It must be mentioned that Gill was the vice-captain in the series against Sri Lanka last year, and Axar was only elevated to this role in the 25-year-old's absence. Also Read: India's squad for Asia Cup 2025: Ajit Agarkar's 5 big announcements that threw pleasant surprises amid some tough calls However, Kaif believes Axar has done no wrong and deserves to know what really happened to his leadership role. He also hopes that the selectors and Axar communicated about the vice-captaincy being taken away. 'I hope Axar Patel was informed about his removal from vice-captaincy in advance, and he didn't come to know about it from the press conference. Axar did no wrong, so he deserves an explanation,' Kaif wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Axar Patel has played 71 T20Is, scoring 535 runs and taking 71 wickets. The left-handed batter is the captain of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, under his leadership, the franchise failed to make the playoffs this year. Aakash Chopra sympathises with Axar Former India opening batter Aakash Chopra also sympathised with Axar, saying it is a bit unfortunate that the all-rounder lost his vice-captaincy to Gill. Speaking on JioHotstar after the squad was announced, Chopra said, "I also feel that it was a little unfair to Axar that he is suddenly not the vice-captain any more. But that's my opinion. Team looks fine though." The selectors left Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal out of the Asia Cup squad. The latter made it to the reserves list. However, Shreyas wasn't that lucky. Jasprit Bumrah is also back in India's squad while Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma are the two frontline wicket-keepers in the squad. Gill is all set to open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma. What happens to Sanju Samson, only time will tell.

India's Asia Cup Squad: BCCI Ends Shubman Gill Suspense, 2 Big Names Dropped
Test skipper Shubman Gill was on Tuesday appointed India's T20 vice-captain for next month's Asia Cup where Jasprit Bumrah will also be there to bolster the team's bowling attack even as a strong contender like IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer missed out due to abundance of talent in the format. The 25-year-old Gill's last T20 International match was against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in 2024 and he has now replaced Axar Patel as the deputy of skipper Suryakumar Yadav in the 15-strong squad. Asia Cup begins on September 9 and India is placed in Group A of alongside Pakistan, Oman, and the UAE. Gill's inclusion was hardly a surprise after a stupendous run in the recent Test rubber against England where he scored four hundreds in the drawn five-match series. "Gill's form in England was something we expected but he exceeded it all," chief selector Ajit Agarkar said during the squad announcement press conference here. However, the management will have to ponder over Gill's batting slot during the continental showpiece because Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have forged an effective pair at the top. Agarkar looked at it as a delightful problem of plenty rather than a headache. "There are more options (for top order) now and Shubman has been in a great form anyway. When they get to Dubai, they can decide on the playing XI according to the opposition and the conditions," said the former India pacer. But the team think tank has the option of pushing Samson down to the middle-order, where the Kerala batter batted quite often in the past, and gave Gill the opening slot. Agarkar hinted as much. "Sanju was playing because Shubman and Yashasvi were not available at that point (and) so was Abhishek. (But) Abhishek's performances clearly makes it hard to leave him out. Plus, his bowling is handy," he said. "Like I said, he (Shubman) was (the) vice-captain the last time he played T20 cricket. That was after the last World Cup so even at that point, clearly we were thinking along those lines. "Now that he's available, at least he (Suryakumar) has two options. It's their headache to pick the batting lineup (now); ours was to pick the 15 and so. But we've got some real depth as far as T20 cricket is concerned and we are very happy with it," he added. Bumrah returns There were some lingering doubts on Bumrah's availability largely due to the proximity to the home Test series against the West Indies in October. The Asia Cup final is scheduled on September 28 in Dubai, while the first Test against the touring Caribbeans is set to begin on October 2 at Ahmedabad. But the selectors opted to pick him nonetheless and this will be Bumrah's first T20 tournament since last year's World Cup. Apart from the Asia Cup and the series against the West Indies being close to each other, Bumrah's workload management plans too might have been considered before arriving at the decision to pick him for the Asia Cup. As per the strategy, Bumrah played only three matches in the five-match series against England recently, but Agarkar said they have not put in place any rigorous rule on how to manage the pacer. "There's no written plan at the moment. We have had a nice break from the England series. We are trying to look after him. "...most fast bowlers are monitored and it won't change. How we require him (for future tournaments) is also important," he said. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav too has been drafted in, while Jitesh Sharma will be the back-up wicketkeeper batter. Agarkar said Jitesh has evolved a lot as a T20 batter in the last year. The wicketkeeper batter was in good form for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2025, often chipping in with vital runs down the order. "The way he did in the was impressive. We discussed not focusing on the milestones," he noted. Yashasvi Jaiswal was among the five standby players chosen by the selectors. The other four are: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel. "It's unfortunate that Jaiswal has had to miss out but he will have to wait as what Abhishek Sharma has done on the top of the order cannot be looked past," Agarkar said. Sundar was expected to get a place in the first 15 mainly because of head coach Gautam Gambhir's preference for all-rounders. But it would have been hard to ignore the feats of Kuldeep and Varun Chakravarthy in the recent past and left-arm spinner Axar also brings in immense value as a batter flexible enough to come in anywhere in the order. "Sundar is always in the scheme of things. This is not the final squad for the World Cup. We have three spinners at the moment, whether we need four, it can always come into the equation. We have got Rinku as an extra batter which we might require," Agarkar explained. The all-rounder's duty will be shared by Hardik Pandya, Axar and Shivam Dube. No place for Shreyas Another prominent name missing in the squad was Shreyas Iyer, who showed tremendous form while guiding Punjab Kings to the IPL final earlier this year. This was a season after guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to a trophy-winning campaign. Agarkar blamed it on the abundance of T20 talent that makes it difficult to accommodate Shreyas. "We have got some serious options in T20 not the easiest squad to pick but good headache to have," Agarkar said. India squad for Asia Cup: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Jitesh Sharma, Shivam Dube, Arshdeep Singh, Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav. Standbys: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Jaiswal should be in T20I team for next World Cup: Gambhir's old video goes viral
India head coach Gautam Gambhir's old video calling for Yashasvi Jaiswal's selection in the Indian T20I side is going viral after the opening batter was left out of the Asia Cup 2025 squad. Jaiswal was a part of India's T20 World Cup 2024 winning team and last played the shortest format in July 2024 against Sri southpaw has been a consistent performer for Rajasthan Royals since 2023 and has played 23 T20Is, scoring 723 runs at an average of 36.15 and a strike rate of 164.31 with one hundred and five fifties. However, despite a brilliant beginning to his career, Jaiswal has been left out of the team as Shubman Gill has been preferred ahead of clip from an old interview of Gautam Gambhir from 2023 has been going viral on social media, where he could be seen asking for Jaiswal's selection. 'I believe Yashasvi Jaiswal should be a part of India's T20I side, not just for one tournament but also for the next World Jaiswal hasn't done well in just IPL, he's scored double and triple hundreds in domestic cricket. He also scored double centuries in List A cricket during Vijay Hazare Trophy. So what he's done in IPL, is icing on the cake and hence he should be a part of the team in all three formats,' Gambhir said in an interview in Me Bigger Double Face person than Gautam Gambhir, I'll deactivate my account.#AsiaCup Virat (@chiku_187) August 19, 2025Ahead of Jaiswal, Shubman Gill was picked as the third opener in the squad along with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. The opening batter was named the team's vice captain in July 2024 ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. However, he hasn't featured in T20Is since then as Samson sealed his spot at the following his stellar show in England on his Test captaincy debut, Gill has been brought back into the T20I side and has been re-appointed as the vice captain. With him back in the squad, it remains to be seen where he will bat as Samson and Abhisek have sealed their slot in the opening.- EndsTune InMust Watch
