Sarawak Cable rejects Abu Bekir's denial on lawsuit
In an announcement today, the company said the board had duly deliberated and recorded the decision prior to making the announcement, and the meeting was witnessed accordingly.
The clarification comes after The Edge reported that a lawyer representing Abu Bekir had issued an email denying his involvement and support for the board's legal action, further alleging external influence by UK-based Serendib Capital Ltd.
Sarawak Cable described the lawyer's statements as 'untrue' and accused unnamed legal representatives of interfering in the company's internal affairs.
The legal dispute unfolds amid broader boardroom and shareholder tensions, as Serendib — once positioned as a white knight — has filed a separate lawsuit against SCB, Abu Bekir, and six other directors.
Meanwhile, Abu Bekir is seeking to intervene in the ongoing judicial management proceedings, which were triggered by a creditor's claim over unpaid legal fees.
SCB has been under PN17 status since September 2022 and is still in the process of formulating a regularisation plan.
Shares in Sarawak Cable fell 10.5% to close at 8.5 sen today, valuing the company at RM33.9 million. –TMR

Shares of the Irvine, California-based company, which powers digital lending and account opening for financial institutions, jumped 24% in afternoon trading. "Industry consolidation has been a key theme in fintech and we view the multiple as reasonable," said William Blair analyst Cristopher Kennedy. "We have long held the belief that MerdianLink would represent an attractive asset as the company generates strong EBITDA margins at around 40%." The deal also highlights the growing trend of money managers seeking strategic control of technology companies driving digital transformation in financial services. Centerbridge is also not new to the fintech space, having acquired bank tech firm CSI in a $1.6 billion deal in 2022. "As the pace of change across the finance and tech sectors continues to accelerate, MeridianLink is uniquely positioned to help financial institutions enhance their digital lending and credit reporting capabilities," said Centerbridge's Jared Hendricks and Ben Jaffe. Founded in 1998, MeridianLink caters to nearly 2,000 community financial institutions and reporting agencies. Its revenue rose 8% to $84.6 million during the three months ended June 30, while net loss narrowed to $3 million. Centerview Partners and J.P. Morgan are advisers to MeridianLink on the deal, which is expected to close in the second half of 2025. Goldman Sachs is advising Centerbridge. Epstein partner Ghislaine Maxwell's grand jury records to remain sealed
NEW YORK: A US judge denied on Monday the Justice Department's bid to unseal records from the grand jury that indicted the late financier Jeffrey Epstein's partner Ghislaine Maxwell on sex trafficking charges, writing that the records did not answer lingering questions from the public about their crimes or Epstein's death. Manhattan-based US District Judge Paul Engelmayer, who reviewed the transcripts of the witness testimony heard by the grand jury and other evidence the panel saw, wrote that the government's assertion that the materials would reveal meaningful new information about Epstein's and Maxwell's crimes was "demonstrably false". "A member of the public familiar with the Maxwell trial record who reviewed the grand jury materials that the government proposes to unseal would thus learn next to nothing new," Engelmayer wrote. "Insofar as the motion to unseal implies that the grand jury materials are an untapped mine load of undisclosed information about Epstein or Maxwell or confederates, they are definitely not that," the judge wrote. Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence after her 2021 conviction on sex-trafficking charges. Epstein died by suicide in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. He had pleaded not guilty. Neither the Justice Department nor a lawyer for Maxwell immediately responded to requests for comment. President Donald Trump last month instructed Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek the release of the Epstein and Maxwell grand jury material, as he sought to quell discontent from his base of conservative supporters and congressional Democrats over his administration's handling of documents from the cases. Trump, a Republican, had promised to make public Epstein-related files if re-elected and accused Democrats of covering up the truth. But in July, the Justice Department said a previously touted Epstein client list did not exist, angering Trump's supporters.
