Speaker Congratulates HM the King, HRH the Crown Prince on McLaren's Formula 1 Win

Manama: Ahmed bin Salman Al Musallam, Speaker of the Council of Representatives, extended his congratulations to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, on McLaren securing first and third places in the 21st edition of the 2025 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the Speaker emphasized that this international sporting achievement is the result of His Majesty the King's support for the sports sector, the attention and follow-up of HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and the efforts of Team Bahrain.
He added that it is another milestone in the Kingdom's record of global achievements under its comprehensive development process.
He also congratulated Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Minister of Finance and National Economy and Chairman of Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company, commending ongoing efforts to invest in sport and support the national economy across variou
s domains.

Four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull went for a three-stop strategy that resulted in him losing third place in the final laps before being handed a 10-second penalty for crashing into Mercedes' George Russell who finished fourth. It was Piastri's fifth win of the season and the seventh win of his career – and his eighth consecutive podium finish for McLaren, a feat that had only been achieved before by threetime champion Ayrton Senna and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. Nico Hulkenberg was fifth, from 15th on the grid, for Sauber ahead of Hamilton in a Ferrari, Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly of Alpine. Two-time champion and local hero Fernando Alonso finished ninth for Aston Martin with Verstappen classified 10th after his bruising late incidents which prompted 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg to suggest he deserved to be black-flagged and disqualified. 'Great weekend' 'It was a bit of a surprise to see Max try a three-stop and it nearly worked for him,' said Piastri. 'But it's been a great weekend overall. The overall pace was really good and we could turn it on when we needed to – and I am just very proud of the work we've done this weekend. 'It's a nice way to bounce back from Monaco. It's been a superb weekend.' Monaco winner Norris started second but ceded his position to Verstappen on the first lap before battling back to follow his teammate home. 'Oscar drove a very good race today,' said Norris. 'I didn't quite have the pace to match him. We gave it our best shot. It's a long race and anything could have happened at the end of the race. 'We both got pretty sideways with the safety car restart. It was a good, fun race and for us as a team to finish one-two is even better.'

Bahrain Space Agency Launches AI Powered Satellite Payload

The Bahrain Space Agency (BSA) announced the launch of its first specialised payload for cloud detection and identification of satellite imagery. The project utilises advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and has been developed in collaboration with the Chinese company Star Vision and the Omani company 'Oman Lens,' aboard a joint satellite between the Sultanate of Oman and the People's Republic of China. The project involves a group of BSA engineers in the design, development, and testing of advanced AI algorithms, which are being implemented on board a satellite operating in low Earth orbit. The project aims to build national capacity in the field of AI algorithm development, enhancing local competencies, stimulating continuous innovation, and consolidating the Kingdom's position as a regional hub for space innovation. These algorithms are dedicated to analysing satellite images in real time, detecting and identifying clouds, estimating their coverage in images, and then automatically replacing them with parts of previous images before transmitting the data to ground stations. This process improves the efficiency of space systems and enhances the quality of the extracted data, which is subsequently used in a variety of applications, such as urban planning, air and water quality monitoring, ship identification and location, and other space-based applications that provide valuable data to a wide range of public and private sector entities. Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Aseeri, CEO of the BSA, highlighted that the initiative stands as a major achievement for the organisation, reinforcing Bahrain's status as a frontrunner in the space sector following the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The project also underscores the BSA's international partnerships and the technical and scientific expertise of its staff, which have been instrumental in making this distinguished collaboration possible. Space Engineer Yaqoob Al Qassab noted that the project is among several initiatives designed to strengthen Bahrain's national expertise in developing and integrating AI algorithms with satellite systems. The technical team involved serves as the core of a dedicated Bahraini group focused on applying AI technology in space to support sustainable development goals. He also mentioned that the team is now engaged in a new collaborative project with the same partners, targeting the deployment of advanced algorithms for automated maritime vessel detection from space. This project marks the first Bahraini–Omani cooperation in the space sector, and represents the third Arab–Chinese space cooperation, following the Bahraini–Egyptian–Chinese collaboration on lunar projects.
