'Sitaare Zameen Par' director RS Prasanna

"When the whole world was in lockdown, my world was opening up,' says filmmaker R.S. Prasanna. The year was 2020 and Prasanna, then living in Chennai, had managed to land a meeting, albeit virtual, with Aamir Khan. Best known for directing the comedy Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, a remake of his sleeper Tamil hit, it was a dream Prasanna says he didn't dare dream. Convincing the pernickety Khan about a script is no easy feat, but Prasanna and writer Divya Nidhi Sharma managed to grab his attention with a funny tale about a man who comes of age as he trains a basketball team of neurodivergent individuals. Five years later, that pitch has manifested as Sitaare Zameen Par, which Khan has also produced.

Thug Life box office collection day 9: Kamal Haasan's debacle will fall short of critically panned Indian 2, struggles to hit Rs 50 crore

Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's much-anticipated gangster drama Thug Life continues to face an uphill battle at the domestic box office. On its ninth day (Friday), the film managed to earn only Rs 75 lakh across all languages, bringing its total domestic collection to ₹44.75 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The film is also Mani Ratnam's first flop in 10 years. In Tamil, Thug Life registered an overall occupancy of 17.43% on Friday. The numbers, however, improved slightly over the course of the day, from 12.35% in the morning shows to 18.37% in the evening and 22.05% at night. The Hindi and Telugu versions fared slightly better with occupancy rates of 20.36% and 20.3%, respectively. Released on June 5, the film has faced stiff competition from Akshay Kumar's comedy entertainer Housefull 5, which, despite negative reviews from both critics and audiences, has significantly outperformed Thug Life. On its ninth day, Housefull 5 earned Rs 81 lakh and has so far amassed Rs 133.25 crore nett in India. Also Read | What happens when a classic director chases the reels generation? The answer is Mani Ratnam's 'Thug Life' By comparison, Thug Life is still struggling to cross the ₹50 crore mark, something Haasan's previous release Indian 2 easily surpassed with a Rs 70.4 crore opening week. The movie attracted controversy in the days leading up to its release, after Haasan made comments that were perceived as insensitive towards Kannadigas. As a consequence, the film was banned from release in Karnataka. The star's last hit was Vikram, directed by Lokesh Kannagaraj, but Haasan has had a difficult time at the box office in the last decade or so. Thug Life features an ensemble cast including Nassar, Ali Fazal, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Silambarasan, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Rohit Saraf, and Sanjana Krishnamoorthy. The film also marks the much-hyped reunion of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan after 38 years, following their iconic collaboration on Nayakan.
