
Hanwha's new ice cream brand Benson debuts in Apgujeong
Betterscoop Creamery, the ice cream business subsidiary of Hanwha Galleria, held a press conference ahead of Friday's official opening for premium ice cream brand Benson's first store, Benson Creamery Seoul, on Monday.
Located a one-minute walk from Apgujeong Rodeo Station Exit No. 5, the store is surrounded by popular restaurants and select shops, including the Hanwha-introduced Five Guys US burger franchise, and sees high traffic of young people and tourists.
'Just like our slogan 'Freeze the Moment,' we hope that our customers can share their precious memories encapsulated in each ice cream scoop here at Benson,' Betterscoop Creamery CEO Oh Min-woo said.
Hanwha Galleria Vice President Kim Dong-seon, the driving force behind the ambitious premium ice cream brand project, provided significant input throughout the launch process — from setting the overall direction to giving detailed product feedback, the CEO explained.
To focus on the original taste and quality of ingredients, Betterscoop Creamery established its own production facility in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province.
All dairy products are domestically sourced, and the milk fat content has been raised to as much as 17 percent to create a rich flavor. Air content has been reduced to about half that of conventional products, with an average of 40 percent, resulting in a dense texture.
Twenty flavors are available, with a single cup priced at 5,300 won. Seasonal and special menus will rotate regularly.
Unique features at the three-floor store include an experiential space where customers can participate in the entire process, from ingredient selection to production and packaging, as well as a tasting lounge, where a premium dessert menu using Benson products will be available in collaboration with Chef Justin Lee, the first Korean to win France's prestigious gastronomy award, "La Liste," last year.

IBK gains preliminary nod for Vietnam unit after 8-year wait
The state-run Industrial Bank of Korea has secured preliminary confirmation from the Vietnamese central bank, bringing the policy lender a step closer to establishing a full subsidiary in the country. The State Bank of Vietnam issued a confirmation letter for IBK's subsidiary application on May 30, marking the official start of the review process, the Financial Services Commission announced Monday. The confirmation comes nearly eight years after IBK first submitted the request. The confirmation letter indicates that the screening process has officially begun and that all necessary documentation for regulatory review has been submitted. Vietnam's central bank has rarely approved new foreign banking subsidiaries in recent years. The last such approval was granted to Singapore's United Overseas Bank in September 2017. Once IBK's Vietnamese subsidiary is established, Korea will have three banks operating in Vietnam — alongside Shinhan Bank and Woori Bank — drawing level with Malaysia as the country with the most foreign bank subsidiaries in Vietnam. IBK currently operates two branches in Vietnam, one in Hanoi and the other in Ho Chi Minh City. These branches are expected to be absorbed into the new subsidiary once it is established. Earlier in May, the Vietnamese central bank also approved the Korea Development Bank's plan to open a branch in Hanoi, six years after the policy bank first submitted its request. KDB currently operates only a representative office in Vietnam and does not conduct direct business operations in the country. The FSC highlighted that these recent approvals are the result of continued bilateral diplomacy between Korea and Vietnam, including high-level summits, executive discussions, and official correspondence. 'The issuance of confirmation letters for IBK and KDB is an unprecedented outcome that reflects the government's financial diplomacy and the banks' proactive efforts,' the FSC said. Officials from IBK and KDB stated that the policy lenders aim to support both Vietnamese businesses and Korean companies expanding into the country, thereby contributing to mutual economic growth. IBK plans to focus on financing small and medium-sized enterprises, while KDB intends to support large-scale infrastructure projects.

Trump's 50% steel tariff deals blow to Korean exporters
New US levy threatens 13% of Korea's steel exports, prompting emergency talks in Seoul In yet another tariff storm last week, US President Donald Trump shocked the world once more with plans to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from 25 percent to 50 percent, starting Wednesday. Speaking from a US Steel mill in the Pittsburgh suburbs, Trump described the move as a deal that would 'secure' the American steel industry, one that 'nobody's going to get around.' The tariff escalation is set to deliver another major blow to Korean exporters, the fourth-largest steel supplier to the US. In 2024, exports to the US accounted for 13 percent of Korea's total steel exports. 'At a time when exports to the US are barely holding up following the 25 percent tariff, an additional 25 percent will severely undermine the competitiveness of Korean companies,' said an industry insider. In response, Korean trade officials and steelmakers, including Posco Holdings and Hyundai Steel, gathered Monday for an emergency meeting convened by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in Seoul to assess the fallout. The agenda centered on evaluating the potential impact of the tariff hike on the industry and formulating future response strategies. While closely monitoring the situation through its networks with US diplomatic offices and the US subsidiaries of Korean companies, the ministry has pledged to implement swift responses to 'minimize' the impact on Korea's steel sector. Some analysts, however, suggest the damage may be limited. According to a Seoul-based market researcher at Daol Investment & Securities, even after the initial 25 percent tariff, US prices for hot-rolled steel remained high. 'The full impact of the new hike depends on how much US steel prices rise in response,' the researcher said. That, in turn, may increase the competitive edge of companies like Hyundai Steel. The company is committed to a $5.8 billion investment plan to build an electric arc furnace-based integrated steel mill in Louisiana by 2029, in partnership with Posco Group. The tariff hike comes amid the US push to bolster its domestic steel industry, which constitutes the backbone of the nation, according to Trump. Trump recently endorsed US Steel's $14 billion acquisition by Japan-based Nippon Steel, a deal he had previously opposed on national security grounds. He said the partnership would create and save more than 100,000 jobs while keeping the American steelmaker under US control, though few details have been disclosed. Although the Court of International Trade ruled last week against Trump's tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, potentially hindering his use of punitive levies, it has no bearing on steel and aluminum tariffs. Those instead fall under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, which authorizes tariffs on national security grounds.

Hanwha Defense Australia appoints ex-BAE exec as new head
Hanwha Defense Australia, a subsidiary of Korean defense leader Hanwha Aerospace, has appointed Australian Army veteran Ben Hudson as its new managing director, further strengthening Hanwha's leadership with globally seasoned defense professionals. The former CEO of BAE Systems Australia — the nation's largest military contractor — officially took office as managing director Monday. He succeeds general manager Dean Michie, who served as acting managing director for 12 months, the company announced. 'I am pleased to be joining the team at HDA during such an important point of the company's growth,' said the new managing director. Hanwha Aerospace highlighted Hudson's extensive experience across Australia and Europe's defense sectors, including senior roles at BAE Systems, Rheinmetall and General Dynamics, as well as his service as an officer in the Australian Army.
