Nifty at 8-month high on likely delay in US' EU tariffs

The Hindu9 hours ago

Stock market rallied 1.2% to an eight-month high on the third consecutive positive day responding to relief from potential delay in U.S. tariff on European Union.
Nifty and Sensex closed at 25,549.00 and 83,755.87 points respectively on the June 26.
Barring Media, telecom and realty indices, all sectoral indices were up on the bourses. Metal Indices were up the most increasing 2.13% and Oil and Gas stocks rallied 1.6%.
On this monthly expiry day, trading volumes on the NSE cash market were higher by 17% compared to yesterday, indicating increased participation, experts said.
Indian bourses majorly reacted to economic policy decisions in US which affected the dollar index.
'The Indian Rupee also reflected the market's bullish sentiment, appreciating by 38 paise against the U.S. dollar to close at 85.70, its highest close since June 12th. This rise in the rupee was primarily driven by a weaker US Dollar Index, which has plummeted to a three-year low amidst growing speculation that US President Donald Trump is considering nominating the next Federal Reserve chair early, potentially paving the way for a more dovish monetary policy,' according to Nandish Shah, Senior Derivative & Technical Research Analyst, HDFC Securities.
'Nifty has emphatically surpassed its crucial swing high resistance of 25,317 and closed well above it,' Mr.Shah said. Swing high refers to a situation when the chart's peak is followed by two smaller peaks. This signifies a potential resistance level for the market. 'Nifty is now expected to head towards the next resistance band of 25,640-25,740, where an unfilled gap lies on the daily charts. On the downside, the previous resistance of 25,317 is now expected to interchange its role as a strong support going forward, reinforcing the bullish structure of the market,' Mr.Shah added.

Sensex surges 1,000 points, nears peak

MUMBAI: The sensex is not far behind Wall Street indices that are racing to their record highs. On the back of resilient domestic economic fundamentals, the sensex on Thursday closed 1,000 points (1.2%) up at 83,756 points, less than 3% off its Sept-end peak of 85,978 points. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On the NSE, Nifty too rallied 304 points (1.2%) to close at 25,549 points, just 2.8% or 728 points away from its record high as foreign investors returned. Signs of stability in West Asia that witnessed escalating tension between Israel and Iran first and then the US joining forces with Israel in bombing nuclear facilities in Iran over the past two weeks, prompted investors to buy stocks. The weakness of the dollar and the fall in crude oil prices, India's biggest import item, also helped the rally. On the domestic front, RBI's move to sharply cut interest rate by half a percentage point earlier this month and stable inflation numbers helped investor sentiment, market players said. According to Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking, the domestic markets witnessed a decisive session on Thursday that was supported by stable global cues, followed by a range-bound move in the first half. However, the market momentum picked up as the session progressed, driven by strong buying in select heavyweights across sectors, Mishra said. The broking house now expects the leading indices to gradually move towards their record high levels. The day's rally was led by foreign funds that net bought stocks worth Rs 12,594 crore, the biggest single-session net inflow figure since Sept 20, 2024. On the other hand, domestic funds were net sellers at Rs 195 crore, data on the BSE website showed. Thursday's strong upsurge in the market added about Rs 3.5 lakh crore to investors' wealth with BSE's market capitalisation now at Rs 457.5 lakh crore, data showed.

IIM Kozhikode Welcomes MBA Class Of 2025–27 With Over 50% Women Candidates

Last Updated: IIM Kozhikode has inducted 586 students into its 2025–27 MBA programmes, achieving 51% women representation across all three full-time postgraduate courses. The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) has officially inducted 586 students into its full-time postgraduate programmes for the 2025–2027 academic cycle, achieving a notable milestone with 51% women representation across its three MBA programmes. The induction ceremony was led by Director Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, with Aju Jacob, Managing Director of Synthite Industries, gracing the occasion as Chief Guest. A total of 586 students were inducted across IIMK's three full-time Post Graduate programmes – the flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP), PGP in Finance (PGP-Fin), and PGP in Liberal Studies and Management (PGP-LSM). This year, IIM Kozhikode has achieved an impressive 51% women representation across its full-time MBA programmes — the fourth time in a decade that women have outnumbered men in its incoming class. This achievement challenges traditional gender gaps in Indian management education. The incoming cohort has an average age of 24 years and an average work experience of two years. Students from Delhi, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh make up 35% of the class, while Kerala, the host state of the institute, is represented by 23 students. The batch reflects rich national diversity. In addition to the MBA programmes, the institute also welcomed its 19th batch of PhD scholars, with 31 students — the largest-ever doctoral intake at IIM Kozhikode. The flagship PGP-29 batch includes 489 students, of which 55% are women, significantly higher than the 36% women in the overall CAT 2024 applicant pool. The batch also shows strong academic diversity with 53% non-engineers — reversing the long-standing engineering dominance in B-schools. Seven international students from Canada, USA, UK, and the UAE have also joined the programme. Highlighting IIM Kozhikode's deep-rooted commitment to diversity and inclusion, Director Prof. Debashis Chatterjee stated, 'Diversity is not a statistic for us – it is a strategic imperative. We are shaping future leaders who will thrive in a complex, pluralistic world. This cohort reflects the values we stand for: inclusion, intellect, and innovation. We have continually endeavored to create an inclusive academic community where varied perspectives and experiences enrich the learning process and prepare our students to become global leaders." Before today's formal inauguration, students participated in a four-day immersion programme (June 16–19) to get familiar with the campus, culture, and curriculum. A week-long orientation is now underway, with sessions by industry leaders, faculty, alumni, and senior government officials. Classes are set to begin on June 30.
